Barbarian Hammer of the Ancients Leveling Build (1-60)
Hammer of the Ancients is the hardest-hitting leveling build for the Barbarian. Every point in this build is aimed at one thing — slamming down with massive strikes that decimate groups and stagger elites. The Berserking status effect amplifies everything, giving you more damage, more movement speed, and faster resource generation the longer you stay aggressive. This build also transitions cleanly into endgame HotA setups when you hit 60.
Quick Start
- Set Lunging Strike to skill slot 1 — your Fury generator and gap closer
- Set Hammer of the Ancients to skill slot 2 — your primary damage skill
- Dive into packs with Lunging Strike to trigger Berserking, then slam with Hammer of the Ancients
- Assign Hammer of the Ancients to your Two-Handed Bludgeoning weapon in the Arsenal System immediately
- Pick up the Aspect of Ancestral Force as soon as possible — it’s a must-have

Rotation and Playstyle
The core loop is simple:
- Dive into a pack with Lunging Strike to trigger Berserking
- Use Charge to reposition and chain into the next group
- Spam Hammer of the Ancients as your primary damage
- Keep shouts (Rallying Cry, War Cry) on cooldown at all times
- Pop Wrath of the Berserker on elites and bosses
Once you find Earthstriker’s Aspect the rotation gets more intentional. Assign Lunging Strike to Dual-Wield and Charge to your Two-Handed Slashing weapon. This lets you hit 8 weapon swaps faster, guaranteeing an Overpower hit on your next Hammer slam for massive burst damage.
Berserking is the engine of this build. Combat Lunging Strike triggers it on crits, Battle Fervor triggers it on Charge hits, and War Cry and Wrath of the Berserker trigger it on demand. Unconstrained makes every Berserking window significantly more powerful — stay in it as much as possible.

Arsenal System — Barbarian Class Mechanic
Barbarians wield four weapons simultaneously and assign skills to specific weapon types. For this build:
- Hammer of the Ancients — must be assigned to your Two-Handed Bludgeoning weapon. This activates the Wallop passive for bonus damage.
- Charge — assign to Two-Handed Slashing to speed up weapon swap tracking for Earthstriker’s Aspect.
- Lunging Strike — assign to Dual-Wield for faster attacks and quicker Fury generation.
- Weapon Technique slot — use Two-Handed Mace technique for its bonus damage to vulnerable enemies.
Unlock the Weapon Technique system at Level 15 by completing the “Masters of Battle” quest in Ked Bardu from Forgemaster Kerdi.

Runewords
Socket one Ritual Rune and one Invocation Rune into a two-socket item (helm, chest, pants, or two-handed weapon) to create a Runeword.
| Rune | Type | Effect |
| Cir | Ritual | Gain 30 Offering: Cast the same Non-Channeled Skill 3 times |
| Zan | Ritual | Gain 150 Offering: Cast an Ultimate Skill |
| Gar | Invocation | Requires 25 Offering: Gain 2.5% Crit Chance for 5 seconds, up to 25% |
| Lum | Invocation | Requires 5 Offering: Restore 2.5% Primary Resource |
Elixirs
Craft at the Alchemist in any main town. Upgrade your healing potion every 5-10 levels.
- Elixir of Advantage — Attack Speed boost
- Elixir of Resourcefulness — Fury generation and cost reduction
- Any elixir works while leveling — all grant 5-8% bonus experience
Common Mistakes
- Not using Charge aggressively — Charge isn’t just movement. It triggers Berserking via Battle Fervor and counts toward Earthstriker’s weapon swap tracking. Use it constantly.
- Ignoring shouts — Rallying Cry and War Cry fuel your Fury and activate Berserking. Keep them on cooldown, not saved for emergencies.
- Wrong weapon assignment — Hammer of the Ancients must be on your Two-Handed Bludgeoning weapon or you lose the Wallop passive damage bonus entirely.
- Skipping Unconstrained — This Key Passive dramatically increases your Berserking window. Don’t delay taking it at point 34.
- Not upgrading your healing potion — Return to the Alchemist every 5-10 levels. The healing difference is significant in later zones.
What’s Next
You’ve hit 60 with a solid HotA foundation. The endgame version keeps the same core and layers in gear optimization, paragon board progression, and higher difficulty content.
