Privacy policy

Short version. We do not run accounts. We do not ask for your name, your email, or anything else to read a page or play a game, and there is nothing here to log in to. Game progress is saved in your own browser and never reaches us. One third-party widget, Grow by Mediavine, does offer an account of its own, and it loads on every page. See below.

Who runs this site

What we do not collect

No accounts, logins, passwords, or profiles of our own.
No names, addresses, phone numbers, or payment details.
No forms. There is nothing on this site to submit.
No selling or sharing of personal information, in the CCPA/CPRA sense or any other.

Game saves stay on your device

Games in the Game Lab save progress using your browser's local storage. That data lives in your browser on your device. It is never transmitted to this site or anywhere else, we cannot read it, and there is no account it is attached to. Clearing your browser's site data deletes it permanently, and we cannot restore it.

Server logs

This site is a set of static files served from a virtual private server we run ourselves, rather than from a managed hosting platform. There is no content delivery network and no proxy sitting in front of it: your browser asks our server for a page and our server answers. Nobody else is handed your request to process on our behalf, because nobody else is in the path.

The web server keeps ordinary access logs — IP address, the time, the page asked for, and the browser's user agent. That is what a web server does, and it is what makes it possible to see an attack or a broken link. Those logs are ours and they stay ours: not sold, not shared, not fed into an analytics product, and not joined to anything else on this site, because there is nothing else here to join them to.

Analytics

This site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which pages get read. It sets cookies in your browser and shares data, including a truncated form of your IP address, with Google.

Whether it waits for you depends on where you are. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland it does not run until you agree to it: on your first visit you are asked, and if you decline or simply ignore the question, the script is never loaded and no analytics cookie is ever set. Everywhere else it starts when you arrive, and the notice you are shown has an off switch rather than a yes and a no.

Turning it off stops all further collection and deletes the cookies it set, so you are not followed from one page to the next. It cannot recall the single pageview already recorded when you landed, and we would rather say so than imply otherwise. Either way the choice changes nothing about how the site works, and you can change it at any time from the cookie policy page.

Which of those two you get is worked out inside your own browser, from the timezone it reports. Nothing about your location is sent to us, stored, or used for anything else — there is no server here to send it to. The test deliberately treats all of Europe as the stricter case, so some people are asked who did not strictly need to be.

Google's handling of that data is governed by their own privacy policy at policies.google.com/privacy. You can also block it entirely with Google's opt-out browser add-on.

Grow by Mediavine

Grow is a third-party widget from Mediavine that adds sharing and saving controls to pages. It loads on every page, for every visitor, and it sets cookies when it does. We are not able to hold it back until you have been asked: Mediavine verify the installation by looking for their code in the page, so a version that waited for consent would simply not work for anyone.

It also offers a Grow account — used to save pages and follow sites across every publisher running Grow. That account is Mediavine's, not ours. Signing up is entirely your choice, nothing on this site asks you to, and if you do, we cannot see who you are, are not told that you did, and hold no part of it.

What Grow collects and how long it keeps it is governed by Mediavine's privacy policy at mediavine.com/privacy-policy, not by this one. If you would rather it did not run, a tracker blocker will stop it and nothing else on this site will break.

Advertising

This site carries display advertising through Google AdSense, which is how it is paid for. Google set cookies and use similar technologies to measure which adverts were shown and, depending on your consent and where you are, to choose them. Nothing you do on this site is sent to them by us — there is no account, no form and nothing to identify you with. The advertising library loads on every page for everyone; where consent is required, no advert is requested until you accept. What Google collect themselves, the controls over it and the full cookie detail are in the cookie policy. There are still no affiliate links on this site and nothing is sold here.

Third parties we deliberately avoid

There are no social media tracking pixels, no comment system, no session recording, and no fingerprinting. External images are hosted here rather than hotlinked, so reading a page does not fetch anything from somebody else's server to display it.

Advertising is the exception, and it is a real one: an ad request goes to Google on every page that carries an advert. That is named above rather than folded into this list, because it is the one thing here that does reach a third party while you read.

The Grow widget described above is the other one — a sharing and saving control from a third party. It is named here rather than tucked into a list of things we avoid, because it is the only script on this site that a reasonable person would call a social widget. Unlike analytics and advertising it is not behind the consent prompt: there is no way to run it that does not set a cookie on arrival, so it is described here plainly instead of being dressed up as optional. A tracker blocker stops it and breaks nothing.

Links out

Articles link to sources on other sites, including developer sites, news outlets, and storefronts. Once you follow one of those links you are on somebody else's site under somebody else's policy. We have no control over and take no responsibility for what they do.

Children

This site is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect anything from them. Since it does not collect personal information from anyone, there is nothing to delete — but if you believe otherwise, email us.

Your rights

Under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, and the CCPA/CPRA you have rights to access, correct, and delete personal data held about you, and to object to its processing. In practice we hold none: no accounts, no database, no mailing list, no personal records of any kind. Where a third-party script is active, your consent is the only basis for it and you can withdraw that at any time from the cookie policy page. If you hold a Grow account, that is held by Mediavine and your rights over it are exercised with them.

Changes

This policy changes when the site does, and the date at the top changes with it. Anything that would newly collect or share data — advertising, analytics, a newsletter — will be reflected here before it goes live rather than after.
