Ultimate weapons and final Limit Breaks

Updated 2026-09-13

Full spoilers.

There are eight final Limit Breaks, not nine

Every character has an ultimate weapon. Cait Sith does not have a Level 4 Limit Break — he caps at Level 2, with Dice and Slots, and that is the whole of his Limit list for the entire game.

So: nine weapons, eight manuals. Guides that promise nine of each are miscounting, and a player hunting for a Cait Sith manual will hunt forever.

Vincent is also structurally different — his Limits are transformations, one per level rather than two, ending in Chaos.

The deadline list — the only part that can go wrong

Four things. Everything else on this page waits for you indefinitely.

Item Deadline
Princess Guard (Aerith’s weapon) Leaving the Temple of the Ancients
Great Gospel (Aerith’s Limit) Aerith leaving the party, shortly after the Temple
Missing Score (Barret’s weapon) The raid on Midgar — and Barret must be in the active party
HP Shout (Cait Sith’s weapon) Leaving the Shinra Building during the raid

Missing Score and HP Shout are the two that bite. They sit in the same sequence, hours apart from the decision that determines whether you can get one of them — you pick your party of three before the parachute drop and cannot change it, and Barret’s chest does not exist without him.

Princess Guard is odd rather than difficult: you can get it on time and still barely use it, because Aerith leaves the party two boss fights later.

Where the other seven weapons are

Character Weapon Where
Cloud Ultima Weapon dropped by the roaming Weapon, at the end of the world-map chase
Tifa Premium Heart Wall Market terminal, once the Key to Sector 5 is dug up at Bone Village
Red XIII Limited Moon Cosmo Canyon observatory, late
Yuffie Conformer a chest in the Sunken Gelnika
Cid Venus Gospel Rocket Town — talk to the man watching the rocket, repeatedly
Vincent Death Penalty Lucrecia’s Cave, reached by chocobo or submarine
Barret Missing Score see the deadline list

None of those seven can be permanently missed. Several are easy to never find, which is a different problem.

The numbers, settled

Attack, accuracy, materia slots, links and growth rate come straight from the weapon records. Until those opened, which figure you believed depended on which guide you read.

Weapon Attack Accuracy Slots Linked pairs Growth
Ultima Weapon 100 110 8 4 none
Death Penalty 99 115 8 4 none
Premium Heart 99 112 8 4 none
Missing Score 98 108 8 4 none
Venus Gospel 97 103 8 4 none
Conformer 96 112 8 4 none
HP Shout 95 110 8 4 none
Limited Moon 93 114 8 4 none
Princess Guard 52 111 7 3 normal

Eight of the nine are the same object with a different name on it: eight slots arranged as four linked pairs, and no materia growth at all. Every slot is marked no-growth. You get the best materia layout in the game and the materia in it stops earning AP.

Princess Guard breaks that pattern on every column. Seven slots — three linked pairs and one single — normal growth, and an attack of 52 against a field that otherwise runs 93 to 100. It is the only ultimate weapon you can still level materia in, and the only one where the base attack is clearly not the point.

Death Penalty has the best accuracy at 115; Venus Gospel the worst at 103.

What each one scales off

This is why they are worth the trouble — none of them is just a big number.

Weapon Scales with
Ultima Weapon current HP as a fraction of max — full HP, full damage
HP Shout the same, on HP
Limited Moon the same, on MP
Venus Gospel the same MP formula as Limited Moon — confirmed, see below
Premium Heart Limit gauge fullness — strongest with a full bar, weakest right after using it
Missing Score Barret’s total accumulated AP
Death Penalty Vincent’s lifetime kill count
Conformer the target’s level — and it ignores the Morph damage penalty
Princess Guard how many party members are KO’d

Two of these were disputed. One still is.

Venus Gospel: the suspicion was wrong and the source was right

Every weapon record carries a damage-calculation id. What that id computes lives in the executable, not in the kernel, so the tables cannot hand you a formula — but they settle precisely which weapons share one, by grouping the weapons that carry the same id.

Venus Gospel and Limited Moon carry the same id. They genuinely share a formula.

This page previously called that identical write-up suspicious and guessed it was a templated copy of Limited Moon’s entry. It was not. The source was reporting a real thing and the suspicion is withdrawn.

The same grouping confirms the other duplicated row above: Ultima Weapon and HP Shout carry one id between them, so “the same, on HP” is settled rather than inferred.

The signal is worth something because sharing is rare at this end of the list. Conformer, Missing Score, Death Penalty and Premium Heart each carry an id nobody else has, and so do Master Fist and Powersoul. A shared id is a real result, not everything late being lumped into one bucket.

Princess Guard is still disputed

Princess Guard shares an id with Yoshiyuki. That settles the mechanic — the fallen-allies scaling is real, and it runs shared code rather than a routine written once for Aerith’s weapon.

It does not settle the arithmetic, and the arithmetic is the actual disagreement. Two sources say “×2 per KO’d ally”, which reads as doubling. Two others say a flat step — 1×, 2×, 3×. A shared id tells you two weapons run the same routine. It cannot tell you what that routine multiplies by, because the multiplier is in the executable and the kernel does not contain it.

So this one stays disputed. We still lean to the flat step, because that pair of sources are specific and agree with each other, and we are still not printing a formula.

We are also not printing the specific power ranges you will see quoted (9–49, 4–64, up to 401, up to 521). They trace to a single community answer with no corroboration. The shapes of the formulas are well attested; those particular bounds are not.

The Limit Break manuals

Character Manual Where
Cloud Omnislash Battle Square, 32,000 BP
Barret Catastrophe a woman in a North Corel house, after the coal train
Tifa Final Heaven the piano in her Nibelheim house, once Cloud is back
Aerith Great Gospel see below
Red XIII Cosmo Memory dropped by Lost Number in the Shinra Mansion safe
Yuffie All Creation dropped by Godo at the top of the Wutai Pagoda
Cid Highwind a chest in the Sunken Gelnika
Vincent Chaos Lucrecia’s Cave — trigger the scene, leave, fight a few battles, return

A manual cannot be used until that character has learned every earlier Limit technique — six for most, three transformations for Vincent. This is well-corroborated community consensus rather than something we could confirm against the game’s data, so we are labelling it as such.

Great Gospel is the awkward one

The chain:

  1. Reach the cave near Junon with the sleeping man.
  2. He gives you Mythril only when your cumulative battle count ends in matching odd digits — 11, 33, 55, 77, 99. Any other pair gives a different item. Fight, check, repeat.
  3. Take the Mythril to the weaponsmith’s house near the Gold Saucer.
  4. He offers two boxes. Take the smaller one.
  5. Use the manual on Aerith before she leaves the party.

One source calls Great Gospel “not missable” on the grounds that the Mythril step is repeatable indefinitely. That is true and irrelevant: the repeatable part is not the part with the deadline. It is missable, and the deadline is the same as Princess Guard’s.

One detail to disregard: a claim that the battle count also triggers on “zeros”. Zero is even, it contradicts every other source, and it looks like a transcription slip.

Two things that are not true

Yuffie is not permanently missable, so nothing of hers is at risk. She remains recruitable from a repeating forest encounter essentially all game. If a guide frames the Conformer or All Creation as at-risk because “you might miss Yuffie,” that framing is the error.

Premium Heart does not have a bug. Forum posts describe Tifa’s damage collapsing right after a Limit Break fires and call it a glitch. The weapon scales with gauge fullness and the gauge empties when the Limit fires. That is the design working exactly as written.

Game Notes

The interesting thing about this list is how few of them can actually be lost.

Nine weapons, eight manuals, seventeen items — and only four have a deadline. The rest sit in caves and shops and chests that stay open for the whole game. You can finish disc three having never seen most of them, walk back out of the crater, and collect the lot.

Which makes the four that do have deadlines worth stating plainly and once, at the top of a page, instead of buried in seventeen entries: two of Aerith’s, tied to the Temple; and Barret’s and Cait Sith’s, tied to the raid on Midgar — with Barret’s additionally tied to a party choice you make before you jump out of the aeroplane.

That is the whole risk surface. Everything else is a matter of curiosity and time.
