Final Fantasy VII · walkthrough
Icicle Inn
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
A quiet town in the snow. Nothing here is dangerous and nothing here can be lost.
Take the map
There is a map on a wall in one of the houses and you have to examine it to take it. Walking past does nothing.
Take it. The next area is a featureless snowfield with no landmarks in it, and this is the only navigation aid the game will ever give you for it.
Buy your weapons here
This is the last weapon shop for a very long stretch. After you leave there is no town, no shop and no inn until the story has moved you a long way, and the shop here stocks an upgrade for every character.
If you have been hoarding gil, spend it now. There is no Materia shop and no armour shop, so weapons are the whole decision.
Look around properly
There is a house at the back with recordings in it. They are optional, they contain no items, and they are some of the most important story in the game. The game will let you walk straight past all of them and never mention it.
There are also a handful of ordinary pickups in the houses. None of them are timed.
Leaving
You leave on a snowboard. The run has forks in it, and none of the choices matter — they only decide which corner of the snowfield you land in. Nothing is scored and nothing is lost by picking wrong.
(There is a scored snowboard game with real prizes. It is a different machine, at the Gold Saucer, and doing this run is what unlocks it.)
Game Notes
Icicle Inn has a reputation for permanent losses that it does not deserve.
Search for missable items here and you will find warnings. Read them carefully and every one of them turns out to be describing the next area — the glacier and the cliff — which almost every guide covers in the same chapter as the town. The warning gets filed under the heading at the top of the page, and the heading says Icicle Inn.
That is how a location acquires a reputation it has not earned. Nobody is lying. The information is simply sitting under the wrong header, and it has been sitting there for twenty-five years.
What the town actually is: the last quiet moment before the coldest stretch of the game, with a wall map you have to remember to take, and a house full of recordings that explain most of the plot to anyone who bothers to sit down and watch them.
Worth doing on a first run
How this page was made
Researched across one community walkthrough and written from scratch — no source’s wording appears here.
Completionist mode. Full spoilers, in play order, with every permanent loss called out before you reach it. 3 entries below are marked where our sources disagree with each other — we have not picked a winner for you.
Spoilers from here.
Nothing in this town is permanently missable
Worth opening with, because the opposite is widely believed.
The standard missables FAQ lists nothing for Icicle Inn. Every permanent loss that gets attached to this town in search results — Added Cut, Alexander, the Ribbon, the Javelin, Trine — belongs to the Great Glacier or Gaea’s Cliff, which nearly every guide covers in the same chapter under the same heading.
One guide does claim the town can never be revisited once you snowboard out. A community answer thread and a forum thread both describe parking the airship nearby on a later disc and walking straight back in. The weight is against the claim.
What is here
Settled from the game’s data, and unusually clean — each of these is filed to its own map rather than a shared block:
- Glacier Map (key item) — on a wall; you must examine it, not walk over it.
- Hero Drink and a Vaccine — filed with it.
- Snowboard (key item) — from the boy in a house. This is the story gate out of town.
- X-Potion — reached by examining through the inn’s upstairs window, which is why it gets missed.
- Turbo Ether — in the mayor’s house.
The Glacier Map is the one to care about. The next area is a large, repeating, landmark-free snowfield, and this is the only navigation aid the game ever gives you for it.
The shop is the last one for a long time
| Item | Price |
|---|---|
| Dragon Claw | 10,000 |
| Adaman Clip | 11,000 |
| Red M-Phone | 11,000 |
| Organics | 12,000 |
| Microlaser | 12,000 |
| Hawkeye | 12,000 |
| Lariat | 12,000 |
| Mast Ax | 13,000 |
Plus Hi-Potion 300 and Tent 500. No Materia shop, no armour shop. Inn is 200 gil.
There is an upgrade here for every character, and after this there is no town, no shop and no inn until the story has carried you a very long way. If you are sitting on gil, this is the place.
The snowboard run is not scored
One summary frames the left/right forks as a trade between treasure and speed, implying you can lose items by choosing wrong. Two guides state plainly that the ride has no rewards at all and the forks only decide which corner of the Great Glacier you land in.
The second account is right, and the confusion has an obvious source: there are two snowboard games. This one, which is a mandatory unscored field sequence, and a scored arcade cabinet at the Gold Saucer’s Wonder Square with three courses and real one-time prizes — which is unlocked by doing this run once.
Everything you have read about balloon colours, technique scores and Crazy mode belongs to the arcade machine, not to this.
The recordings
There is a house at the back with a playback device in it. Sources disagree on whether there are three or four recordings and on the title of one.
No items, no mechanical reward, and among the most important exposition in the game — what Jenova actually is, what a Weapon is, and where Aerith came from. All of it optional, all of it skippable without a word from the game.
The confrontation on the way out is not a battle
It is a scripted scene with a dodge prompt. There is no HP, no steal and no drop, because there is no fight. Both answers lead to the same place.
Game Notes
The Icicle Inn missable myth is the cleanest example in this whole project of how guide knowledge decays through formatting rather than error.
Nobody wrote anything false. A guide put Icicle Inn, the Great Glacier and Gaea’s Cliff in one chapter — which is sensible, they are one continuous leg — and titled that chapter after the first place in it. Twenty-five years later, “Icicle Inn missable items” is a search term, and the answers people find are all about a mountain two areas away.
We hit the same pattern at Mt. Corel, where a map’s text block “contains” endgame gear, and at the Temple, where poison advice slid from the trash onto the bosses. Different mechanisms, same result: a true statement, filed one step to the left, and nobody going back to check the label.
The town is safe. Take the map, buy a weapon, watch the recordings. Then worry.
