Ultimate weapons and their components

Updated 2026-09-13

Full spoilers.

Six weapons. Four sources agree on every component and quantity below, a fifth disagrees with all of them in one entry, and the argument about which material is the hard one has been settled the same way for twenty-five years without anybody being able to say why.

The game’s files can now say why, and the answer is a number nobody published.

The six recipes

Character Weapon Materials Magazine
Squall Lion Heart Adamantine x1, Dragon Fang x4, Pulse Ammo x12 Weapons Mon, 1st
Zell Ehrgeiz Adamantine x1, Dragon Skin x4, Fury Fragment x1 Weapons Mon, August
Irvine Exeter Dino Bone x2, Moon Stone x1, Star Fragment x2, Screw x18 Weapons Mon, 1st
Quistis Save the Queen Malboro Tentacle x2, Sharp Spike x4, Energy Crystal x4 Weapons Mon, August
Selphie Strange Vision Adamantine x1, Star Fragment x3, Curse Spike x2 Weapons Mon, 1st
Rinoa Shooting Star Windmill x2, Regen Ring x1, Force Armlet x1, Energy Crystal x2 Weapons Mon, 1st

One source publishes Save the Queen with Sharp Spike x1 and Energy Crystal x2 against the other four sources’ x4 and x4. It is the lone dissenter on both figures in the same entry, and a player following it arrives at the junk shop short.

Rinoa’s material is a Force Armlet. Three sources spell it that way and one writes Force Amulet. The game’s own item table settles it: item 84 is Force Armlet. That is not a judgement call, it is the string the game ships.

The magazines do not gate anything

You can build all six weapons without ever finding a single issue of Weapons Monthly. Two sources state it outright — the recipe screen is a convenience, and a junk shop will accept the materials whether or not you have read the magazine that describes them.

Four of the six sources that list the issues attach missability warnings to them without saying this, which turns a collectible warning into a weapon warning. It is not one. If you walk past the 1st Issue you lose a magazine, not Lion Heart.

Where the issues are is still worth having, and the field-text extraction lines up with the literature in a way that is quietly reassuring:

Issue How you get it Field pickup in the data?
March Dropped at the top of the Dollet tower No
April Squall’s dorm after the ball Yes
May Deling City sewers Yes
June Dropped at the Galbadia missile base No
July Balamb Garden training centre Yes
August Trabia Garden, by the fountain Yes
1st Issue The laboratory, in the last flashback Yes

The two issues with no field pickup are exactly the two every source calls boss rewards — and neither boss carries the magazine in its drop table. Elvoret’s mug and drop are G-Returner in every slot at every level; the missile base machine’s tables are Running Fire and Missile, or empty, depending on which of the two records under that name you fight. No enemy anywhere in the game carries a magazine in a mug or drop table — not one, across all 142 records. So March and June are scripted awards, not drop rolls, which is why every source calls them unmissable and why they never vary.

The disputes that remain are about the four found on the ground. May sits behind a choice of sewer entrance and produces six incompatible missability claims from six sources — that is documented on the Deling City page and our own build state outranks all six. July’s trigger event is described four ways. August is placed by one source at a different part of the map from the other three, and can be collected before July, which is why the issue numbers come out of order.

The component table, with the level gate in it

This is the part no published source has, and it comes straight out of the shipped tables: every enemy carries three mug lists and three drop lists, chosen by party level, and the boundaries are stored per enemy. Below, “any level” means the item is in that slot in all three bands.

Material The reliable source Level behaviour
Energy Crystal Elnoyle, killed Nothing below 30. Two of four slots at 30-39, all four at 40+
Adamantine Adamantoise, killed Nothing below 20. One of four slots at 20-29, all four at 30+
Dragon Fang Blue Dragon, killed One slot in every band: x4, then x6, then x8
Dragon Skin Anacondaur, killed One slot x2 below 30; three of four slots at 30+, x4 to x8
Fury Fragment Blue Dragon, mugged All four slots, any level
Star Fragment Iron Giant, mugged All four slots, any level; quantity rises at 30 and 40
Moon Stone Elnoyle, mugged All four slots, any level
Dino Bone T-Rexaur, mugged All four slots, any level: x1-2, x3-4, then x8-10
Screw Geezard, mugged All four slots: x8 below 20, x12 at 20-29, x16 at 30+
Curse Spike Tri-Face, mugged All four slots: x1-2, x2-3, then x6-8 at 30+
Malboro Tentacle Malboro, mugged All four slots, any level
Sharp Spike Grand Mantis, mugged All four slots: x2, x4, then x8
Windmill Abyss Worm, mugged Three of four slots below 20, all four above: x1, x2, x4
Regen Ring Torama, mugged All four slots: x1, x2, then x4
Force Armlet Edea, killed, end of Disc 2 All four drop slots, any level
Pulse Ammo Refined from Energy Crystal, 1 to 10 Inherits the level 30 gate above

Every material name above is checked against the game’s own item table, which decodes to 198 items in id order.

Three things in that table are corrections rather than detail.

Force Armlet does not come from the missile base machine. Research and several published tables credit it there. That record’s drop is Running Fire and Missile; it has no Force Armlet in any slot. The dependable source is Edea’s drop at the end of Disc 2, where it occupies all four slots at every level — a guaranteed single pickup from a fight you cannot avoid. Two other enemies carry it in their rarest drop slot only, and only above party level 30.

Mugging is wrong for two materials and right for eleven. Adamantoise mugs into Whisper and Orihalcon and never once into Adamantine. Elnoyle mugs into Moon Stone at every level from 1 to 100 and never into an Energy Crystal. Two sources warn about the Adamantoise already; the Elnoyle case is on the Esthar page and nowhere else we found.

One source claims Card Mod is the only way to get a Malboro Tentacle. Malboro’s mug table is Malboro Tentacle in all four slots in all three bands. Two sources said drop and mug; the data agrees with the two.

Energy Crystal is the bottleneck, and here is the number behind it

Two sources independently name it the hardest material in the game. They are right, and the reason is not rarity. It is a level gate nobody mentions.

Across all 142 enemy records in the game’s battle files, exactly three carry an Energy Crystal, and not one of them carries it below party level 30.

Enemy Band boundaries When the crystal appears
Elnoyle 30 / 40 Two of four drop slots at 30. All four at 40, x2 rising to x4
Behemoth 30 / 40 Two of four drop slots at 30, quantities rising at 40
Ruby Dragon 35 / 45 One drop slot at 35; at 45 the table is only Fury Fragment and crystals

Read the last column again. A party below level 30 farming Elnoyle for Energy Crystals gets none, ever. Not rarely. The crystal is not in the table the game is rolling on. That is a player killing the right enemy in the right place with the right strategy and receiving, correctly, nothing — and no way whatsoever to find out why from inside the game.

The full requirement across the set is eight crystals: four for Save the Queen, two for Shooting Star, and two more refined into the twelve Pulse Ammo that Lion Heart needs, at ten ammo per crystal. At party level 40 and above, every one of Elnoyle’s four drop slots is a crystal and eight is a short afternoon. At 29 it is unobtainable by killing anything.

There is a card route — ten Elnoyle cards refine into one crystal — and it has no level condition anyone reports. We cannot check it. Card ids are the one part of the item table this project has not decoded, so every Card Mod recipe on this page is researched-only and stays that way. One source adds a practical wrinkle nobody else mentions: the NPCs who play Elnoyle cards do so much less often after the Dollet mission, so the card route gets harder as the game goes on.

The seven exceptions, and what they carry

Most enemies switch bands at 20 and 30. Seven do not: six switch at 30 and 40, and one at 35 and 45. That much is already in this guide, on the Edea’s House page, as the explanation for the level-45 draw trick.

What was not obvious until the item names decoded is that all seven of them carry an ultimate-weapon material. Elnoyle, Behemoth and Ruby Dragon carry Energy Crystal. Iron Giant carries Star Fragment; Torama carries Regen Ring and Moon Stone; Turtapod carries Regen Ring; Imp carries Moon Stone and Curse Spike. Seven enemies out of 142 have late-shifted band boundaries and every single one of them is on this page.

That is not a coincidence anybody would arrive at from the player’s chair, and it is a fairly loud statement about intent: the materials that finish the weapons are attached to enemies whose tables were deliberately pushed later than everything else’s.

Dragon Fang, and the one published source that saw this coming

One source states that Grendels only drop Dragon Fangs below party level 20. No other source in the pool mentions level in connection with any drop at all.

The data says it is very nearly right, and sharpens it:

Enemy Below 20 20 - 29 30 and above
Grendel two of four drop slots one slot, x2 none
Blue Dragon one slot, x4 one slot, x6 one slot, x8
Hexadragon one slot, x2 one slot, x6 none
T-Rexaur none one slot, x6 none
SAM08G one slot two slots two slots, x2

So the warning is real and it is about the wrong enemy. Grendel’s Dragon Fang halves at 20 and vanishes at 30, which is exactly what a low-level player would notice and write down. But Blue Dragon carries a Dragon Fang in the same drop slot in all three bands and the quantity doubles as you level, and SAM08G carries it at every level too. A high-level party is not locked out of Lion Heart. It is locked out of one of five sources, and needs to be told which.

This is the strongest external corroboration this project has for level-banded loot. One writer, working entirely from play, noticed that a drop stopped and correctly attributed it to party level — the single published acknowledgement anywhere in the pool that FFVIII’s loot tables move underneath you. Everyone else publishes drop sources as flat facts.

Adamantine covers three weapons, and has a gate of its own

Three of the six weapons need one Adamantine each. The efficient route everybody cites is Card Mod on a single Minotaur card, which yields ten — nine spare.

The kill route has a gate nobody published, and it is the same shape as the crystal:

Party level Adamantoise’s drop table
Below 20 Turtle Shell, Turtle Shell x2, Whisper, Orihalcon — no Adamantine
20 - 29 Turtle Shell x2, Orihalcon, Orihalcon, Adamantine
30 and above Adamantine in all four slots

Above level 30 every Adamantoise you kill is an Adamantine and the three weapons that need one are three fights away. Below 20 the material is not on its table.

And there is a source no guide in the pool lists. The game stores two records under the name of the Galbadia missile base machine — one of eight name collisions this project has found. One carries no mug or drop table at all. The other carries Adamantine in all four mug slots, at every level band, alongside a Running Fire and Missile drop. If that record is the one you fight, a successful Mug there is an Adamantine on Disc 2 with no level requirement whatsoever. No published source lists that machine as an Adamantine source at all. The missile base page documents the same two-record split from the other direction — it is one of the eight name collisions in this game — and which record the fight actually uses is a playtest question, not a datamine one.

What one successful Mug is actually worth

Eleven of the sixteen materials come out of a mug table where the item occupies all four slots, which means a landed Mug is a guaranteed yield and the only variable is quantity. Set against the recipes:

Need Source Mugs required
Screw x18 Geezard 3 below level 20, 2 above
Sharp Spike x4 Grand Mantis 2 below 20, 1 above
Curse Spike x2 Tri-Face 1 to 2 below 20, 1 above
Star Fragment x3 Iron Giant 3 below level 30, 1 to 2 above
Windmill x2 Abyss Worm 2 below 20, 1 above
Dino Bone x2 T-Rexaur 1 to 2 below 20, 1 above
Moon Stone x1, Regen Ring x1, Fury Fragment x1 Elnoyle, Torama, Blue Dragon 1 each, at any level
Malboro Tentacle x2 Malboro 1 to 2, at any level

Which makes the shape of the whole project clear. Thirteen of the sixteen materials are a single afternoon. Two — Energy Crystal and Adamantine — have hard level floors under them. And one, Force Armlet, is a guaranteed drop from a story fight you will win exactly once, so the only way to fail it is not to know it is there.

Disagreements we are not settling

The Minotaur card’s availability. One source places it on Disc 4 and calls the route impractical; two place it at the Tomb of the Unknown King on Disc 1, one of them naming the exact fight. This is the difference between the Disc 1 Lion Heart route working and not working, and it is one against two. Card ids are not decoded, so the datamine cannot adjudicate. The two-source reading is the one the Disc 1 route depends on.

Hit rate: 255 or 225? Two to three sources say Lion Heart and Strange Vision both carry 255; one says 225 for both. The lone dissenter is consistent with itself, which is not nothing.

It also matters less than it reads. Limit breaks never miss — hit rate has no effect on Renzokuken and none on Selphie’s Slot. Strange Vision’s famous accuracy applies to Selphie’s ordinary Attack command and to nothing else she does. No source in the pool draws that connection; it follows from putting two pages side by side.

Remodel costs, and a suspiciously round ratio. Three sources price Lion Heart at 2,000 gil and four of the others at 800. One source prices them at 1,500 and 600. Every figure from that source is exactly 0.75x the majority. That is almost certainly the Haggle-discounted price listed as the price, but no source says so, so it goes down as a disagreement with the ratio attached rather than a resolution.

Moon Stone on Disc 1. One source says it is unobtainable on Disc 1 without a Chocobo World import, and calls it the thing that blocks Exeter early. The enemy tables cannot speak to this at all: enemy level is a property of the encounter and encounter placement is not in the records. What the tables do say is that Elnoyle’s mug is Moon Stone in all four slots at every level, so wherever you can fight one, one Mug is the whole requirement.

Game Notes

The Energy Crystal is the best example this vertical has produced of a grind that was never a grind.

Everybody who has written about these weapons agrees on the bottleneck. Two guides name it in the same words. And the reason they agree is not that they compared notes — it is that the experience of farming Elnoyle for crystals is genuinely miserable and genuinely universal, right up until the moment it suddenly is not, and nobody could tell you where that moment is because it is not a moment at all. It is party level 40.

What I find hard to get past is the shape of the failure. This is not a rare drop. A rare drop is a player killing a hundred enemies and getting four of something. This is a player killing a hundred enemies and getting zero, because the item has not been placed on the table the game is rolling against. There is no rate to be unlucky at. And the enemy is identical — same sprite, same fight, same place, same name — so the only evidence available to the player is their own failure, repeated.

Then they go and read a guide, and the guide says this is the Energy Crystal farm, because the person who wrote it was level 43.

The card route is the tell, in hindsight. Ten Elnoyle cards into one crystal is an absurd exchange rate for something you can allegedly also just kill for, and it has been the recommended route for two decades. It was recommended because for an enormous fraction of players the kill route returned nothing, and the community did what communities do: it routed around the damage without ever learning what the damage was.

The fix is two words long and it took a file to find them. Be level 40.
