Final Fantasy VIII walkthrough
Written to be read twice. Story mode keeps the page clear so you can play for the plot; completionist mode surfaces every item, sidequest and missable. Switch at the top of any section.
Balamb Garden: the classroom and the Training Center
A school, a computer terminal that hands you your first two Guardian Forces, and a fenced-off jungle behind it containing something that will kill you. Also the point where the game quietly starts scaling to your level.
The Fire Cavern
A short cave with a clock attached to it. The clock is the whole design — it is the game's first scored test, and the score is set by how little time you have left, not by how much you asked for.
Dollet: the SeeD field exam
A timed mission with a scoring rubric, a boss carrying a Guardian Force you have to take from it before it dies, and a machine that will not stop chasing you. Also the clearest example in the game of guides mistaking a curve for a number.
Balamb Garden: SeeD rank and the ball
The quietest area in the game and one of the densest. A key item most guides call missable, a lamp containing an optional Guardian Force far stronger than anything you have, and a magazine on a desk that half the internet says you lose forever.
Timber and the Forest Owls
A train heist with a button-timing puzzle, a town under occupation, and the single most genuinely unrecoverable item in the early game sitting in a pile of magazines.
Galbadia Garden
A rival school with nothing in it. No items, no chests, no magazines — four draw points, two card players and a sixth party member. The real content is the plains outside, where the material for the best weapon in the game is lying around.
Deling City and the sorceress parade
The largest chapter on the disc, and the one that ends it. A mansion you cannot enter without a number from a tomb, a sewer with a magazine in it that half the internet thinks you lose, and three fights in a row that pay nothing but matter enormously.
The Tomb of the Unknown King
A maze of identical corridors containing a number you need, and two brothers you do not. The number takes five minutes. The brothers are the best optional Guardian Force on the disc and almost everything published about their stats is confused.
D-District Prison
Fourteen floors of identical cells, most of them holding something, all of it gone once you leave. The densest concentration of permanent losses in the game, and the only place several of these items exist.
The Galbadian Missile Base
A disguise, a console you have to sabotage correctly or lose the game, and a self-destruct timer you set yourself. The only area in the game where the player chooses the difficulty of the escape and is scored on the choice.
Balamb Garden: the Garden conflict
A school in the middle of a civil war, seven NPCs handing out items to anyone who talks to them twice, and a boss fight built entirely out of enemies you cannot hurt.
Fishermans Horizon
A pacifist town with a school parked in it. Holds the strongest draw point available anywhere near this point in the game, a free ammunition cache most players never find, and a concert that changes nothing but is the best scene on the disc.
Balamb Town, occupied
Your home town under occupation, a Guardian Force you have to draw from a boss because the only other copy is twenty hours away behind a one-way door, and a captain hiding somewhere in town whose whereabouts you can find several ways — one of which pays, one of which costs.
Trabia Garden
A bombed school with two hidden pickups, three draw points nobody agrees about, and the most dangerous Triple Triad region in the game. Nothing here fights you.
The Centra Ruins
A twenty-minute clock, a randomly generated code, a boss that does not attack you, and an optional superboss that has to be farmed into existence. Also the optional Guardian Force with the most contested deadline in the game.
Shumi Village
An underground village with no shops, no enemies and no boss, containing one draw point so good it charges admission, and a magazine you should deliberately leave on the floor until much later.
The Chocobo Forests
Six forests with a puzzle each, one sanctuary with none, and a pile of buried magic stones. Also the one piece of content in this guide that differs between the release you own and the one most people play.
The Battle of the Gardens
Two schools ram each other, and the building you walked around freely on Disc 1 opens up with different draw points, an optional Guardian Force in the lobby, and three boss fights in a row that close the disc.
Edea's House and the White SeeD Ship
The quiet stretch that opens the disc — a house in a flower field, a ship you board exactly once, and a dream with a dragon in it that hands over two of the best spells in the game if you make it stronger first.
The Great Salt Lake
A short unrevisitable stretch with two hidden draw points, a boss you can kill with a healing item, and three roaming enemies that between them pay more experience than anything else nearby.
Esthar
The largest shopping and sidequest hub in the game, a twenty-minute timed chase through it, and the single best farming encounter for ultimate-weapon materials — which changes what it gives you depending on your level, in a way nobody has written down.
The Lunar Base
A location with no enemies, no boss, no shop and no items — two hidden draw points and two card games, in a place nobody returns to, played under every rule in the game at once.
The Ragnarok
Eight fixed fights in a derelict ship, a colour-matching rule that sounds like a puzzle and is really a warning, and the airship that opens the last third of the game.
The Deep Sea Research Center
The optional dungeon with the game's two hardest optional fights in it, a pressure budget instead of a map, and the single most argued-about HP figure in Final Fantasy VIII — which turns out not to be a disagreement at all.
Obel Lake
A talking shadow, four carved rocks that spell out an anagram, and a field of lying stones. Thirteen guides describe the steps and no two describe them the same way.
The Far Islands
Two islands carpeted with top-tier draw points, an island that hands out ability points and almost no experience, and an alien. Also the place where one guide's lone HP figure turns out to be the only correct one published anywhere.
The Lunatic Pandora
One continuous dungeon that runs straight through the disc break, with almost all of its contents decided by what you did in a dream fifteen hours ago — and four mutually incompatible published accounts of which action unlocks what.
Ultimecia's Castle
Your abilities are taken away and you buy them back one boss at a time. Also the last chance at seven Guardian Forces, a superboss with a million HP, and the place where one widely-copied source turns out to have the same fabricated immunity on seven enemies.
