Chapter 18: Destiny's Crossroads
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
This is the last chapter, and there is nothing in it to collect. No chests, no side jobs, no shops worth wandering to. It is a long run of fights, and the only thing this page needs to do is get you ready for it.
What to bring
Set the party up for endurance, not for one big hit.
- Healing on everyone, with Magnify on at least one copy.
- Revival on everyone.
- Barrier, for Manawall. Time, for Haste. Both earn their slots more here than anywhere else in the game.
- Do not lean on a single element. Abilities are safer than spells for much of what is coming.
- Your best weapons and armour, and whichever accessories keep people alive.
Carry as many Mega-Potions, Ethers and Phoenix Downs as you can afford. Keep your summon and your Limit Breaks for when things get bad rather than spending them early.
Where to save
There is a bench and a vending machine before the final stretch. Rest, buy everything you need, check every character’s materia and gear one more time, and save in a separate slot there.
No coming back
The game warns you before you go on. Take the warning seriously: once you continue, the fights run back to back, you cannot get back to the bench or the vending machine, and you cannot change anyone’s equipment until it is over. If you are not ready, turn around while you still can.
The credits follow. After them, nothing you missed in the game is lost.
Game Notes
The last chapter is built as an endurance test, and the preparation you do at that final bench matters more than anything you do with a controller. Players who struggle here almost always struggle because they walked past the bench with a party built for a different fight.
Give it the time. Rest, read your materia, save, and then go.
Worth doing on a first run

Spoilers from here.
The party flees the Shinra Building down the Midgar Expressway — Cloud on a motorcycle, everyone else in a truck — and finds Sephiroth waiting at the end of it. Past the Whisper barrier comes the longest boss sequence in the game. There is nothing to collect in this chapter.
The deadline
Passing through the Whisper barrier, after the bench and vending machine by the toll booths, is the game’s final point of no return. The game asks first. After it, Whisper Harbinger and Sephiroth run back to back: no bench, no shop and no way to change equipment. Players report no autosave between the two, so a loss to Sephiroth lets you retry him until you quit to the menu — after which you resume before the Whispers.
Set the party up at that bench as if it were the last menu you will see, because it is.
Everything, in order
Flying Through the Night. Same bike controls as Chapter 4: left and right slashes, guard, Spinning Slash on cooldown, and a ranged slash from its gauge. When a trooper’s laser sight locks on, move to the other side of the truck. The helicopter bombs red markers on the road ahead; Red XIII heals you once it pulls away. In the tunnel, Slug-Rays and drones, then a M.O.T.H. Unit — dodge the blade volleys, guard its spinning charge to stun it, kill its escort drone first. Out of the tunnel, a helicopter and two 3-C SOLDIER riders: down the riders, then the helicopter. Then Motor Ball.
The Turning Point. The end of the expressway: a bench and vending machine by the toll booths. Talk to everyone, set up materia and gear, buy what you need. Then the warning, the barrier, and the finale.
On Chapter Select the bike sections can be skipped, Motor Ball included.
Bosses
Motor Ball (Cloud, bike). Attack its six wheels from the sides; when it tilts onto one side, switch to the other to avoid being crushed. All six wheels down staggers it — hit the body. After it recovers: a flame spin and a wheel heal. Round two adds a side laser and, after the second stagger, electric orb volleys. Round three shields the wheels, forcing side switches, and it stops healing all six. The last stretch is orb volleys and one large orb. No Manuscript.
Whisper Harbinger. Cloud is in every phase; the others rotate.
- Cloud, Tifa and Barret against the three Whispers.
- Cloud alone against Whisper Rubrum.
- Cloud and Barret against Whisper Viridi and Whisper Croceo.
- Cloud, Tifa and Aerith against Whisper Bahamut.
- Back to the three; Barret and Red XIII join through automatic Limit Breaks as each Whisper is staggered, and a spell or Aerith’s basic attack finishes Harbinger.
Harbinger only takes damage through the Whispers: defeating one staggers Harbinger, and hitting the downed Whisper passes damage on before it reforms. Rubrum absorbs Fire, Viridi Lightning, Croceo Wind — use abilities rather than spells. Whisper Bahamut is weaker than Chadley’s VR version; when it grabs someone, switch characters and hit the hand, and meet Megaflare with Manawall and Magnify-Curaga, since it cannot be dodged. Save your summon and Limits for this phase; Counterstance and Tifa’s Rise and Fall build its stagger. 140,880 HP, no weakness, immune to most statuses. 4,350 EXP, 10 AP, 1,450 gil.
Sephiroth. No weakness; lesser resistance to fire, ice, lightning, wind and magic; immune to Poison, Silence, Sleep, Slow, Stop, Berserk and proportional damage. 65,157 HP.
- Cloud alone. Steadfast Block into Punisher counters; Counterstance absorbs Telluric Fury. Never attack into Scintilla — it counters. Sidestep Aeolian Onslaught, an unblockable downward slash. He also casts Firaga and Blizzaga.
- One ally joins. Adds Aeroga, Hell’s Gate (stand between the lines or dodge) and Zanshin.
- Second ally joins, around half health. Elemental Infusions (counter with the opposing element; Elemental armour absorbs or halves them), Thunderstorm, Flamewall, Octoslash — lethal unless you are at full HP — and Shadow Flare. Manawall and Haste on everyone.
- The last 15–20%. Heartless Angel sets everyone to 1 HP: heal immediately or get to the edge. Multiple Shadow Flares, then Divine Proclamation, a ten-count to a meteor that wipes the party if he is still standing. Hold Limits for this.
Who joins. The pair is Tifa and Aerith, Tifa and Barret, or Aerith and Barret. One guide ties it to a hidden score from the Whisper fight — abilities, spells, items, Limits, staggering and finishing Whispers — with earlier affinity in the mix; the character who scored lowest sits out. Others say only that the pair varies or depends on earlier choices.
After the credits
The save is marked complete and Chapter Select opens. Any chapter replays with its chests, side quests and missables; your levels, materia and gear come with you. Unique chests you already opened give a substitute item instead. Hard unlocks: no items, HP and MP restored only at benches, more EXP and AP, and the Hard-only Manuscripts. The Play Log opens, the bike sections become skippable, and the Chapter 17 simulator — Chadley, Bahamut, Top Secrets — is reachable for the first time.
Hard mode
- Sharpshooter’s Companion Vol. XIV — Whisper Harbinger on Hard.
- Telluric Scriptures Vol. XIV — Sephiroth on Hard.
With no items, bring Prayer and Chakra for heals that do not cost MP, start with a full Limit from Götterdämmerung, and open the Sephiroth fight with Ascension. Barrier on Cloud for Manawall, Time for Haste, Revival on everyone.
Game Notes
The Remake’s ending is the most argued-about thing in it, and this page is not going to settle that. The mechanical point is simpler: the finale is a single uninterrupted block of three big fights, and the setup you leave the toll-gate bench with is the setup you finish the game with. Most failures here are failures of preparation.
The Whisper fight also quietly rewards you for having used everyone. Who stands beside Cloud at the end depends on who did the work, and it is worth playing it more than once to see the other pairings.
