World of Warcraft

Every WoW expansion, and what each one still has to give

Updated 2026-09-22 · checked against Midnight 12.1

On retail, an expansion is not a version of the game you choose to play. It is a set of zones that got absorbed into one world, and everything in it now scales to you. What each one still offers is a levelling campaign, a set of dungeons and raids you can farm, and a list of collectibles. Each page below has all three, with a farm list that remembers what you cleared this week.

Old content is solo content

Raids from two or more expansions ago run on legacy loot: a boss drops from its whole loot table whatever your class, so one character can clear it and see everything. As of 12.1 that is Dragonflight and everything before it. Dragonflight joined in 12.0.1. The War Within should join when the next expansion launches, if the pattern holds.

Loot is still locked per boss, per character, per week, and resetting the instance does not reset it. Older raids share lockouts between difficulties:

Era Lockout
Original game and Burning Crusade One difficulty
Wrath of the Lich King and most of Cataclysm Normal and Heroic share one
Firelands Each difficulty separate
Dragon Soul and most of Mists of Pandaria Looking for Raid separate; Normal and Heroic share
Siege of Orgrimmar onward Each difficulty separate

Dungeons work differently. Normal has no lockout at all, only the account-wide cap of 10 instances an hour. Heroic resets daily, and Mythic weekly.

The weekly reset is Tuesday 15:00 UTC in the US, Oceania and Latin America, and Wednesday 04:00 UTC in Europe. Both are fixed in UTC, so the local time shifts when the clocks change.

What carries across your account

Expansion Reputations warband-wide?
Original game to Warlords of Draenor No, and none announced
Legion In 12.1.5 (test realm, not live in 12.1)
Battle for Azeroth In 12.1.5 (test realm, not live in 12.1)
Shadowlands Ten reputations, since 11.1.5; covenant renown is still per character
Dragonflight Most, including renown
The War Within Yes

Elsewhere on the account:

  • Flying comes from Expert Riding at level 20, and it is account-wide.
  • Skyriding is learned at level 10 on every character once any character has done the Dragon Isles quest.
  • The Garrison and Dalaran Hearthstones have been toys since 10.1.5.

What nobody has settled

  • Wrath’s 10- and 25-player raids. One guide reads as though they share a lockout. The wiki says Normal lockouts from Wrath through Throne of Thunder let you switch between 10 and 25, while Heroic ones are tied to a single instance.
  • Korean and Taiwanese reset times. Both reset on Thursday. The time is not confirmed, so the farm planner offers the US and Europe only.
  • Whether the instance cap is still 10 an hour. It was raised to 10 from 5 in 2014. Nobody has confirmed a change since.
