The Skyborne are two races, not one

Updated 2026-09-17 · checked against Beta build 1.60.1.69893

Every published account describes the Skyborne as one new race playable by both factions. The beta client has two separate races, and the internal naming removes any doubt about which is which — each racial ability is filed as “Skyborne - Alliance - …” or “Skyborne - Horde - …”.

Faction Classes
High Order Skyborne Alliance Druid · Hunter · Mage · Rogue · Warrior
Windshaper Skyborne Horde Druid · Hunter · Rogue · Shaman · Warrior

Four classes in common. One each that the other side cannot take.

The two differences, in full

Across classes and racials, the two races differ in exactly two places.

Class. Alliance Skyborne can be Mages and cannot be Shamans. Horde Skyborne can be Shamans and cannot be Mages. If you are buying the unlock specifically to play a Skyborne caster, that decides your faction before anything else does.

One active racial. Three of the four racials are identical on both sides:

Racial Effect
Walk on Air Active Glide downward through the air for 10 sec
Wind Blessed Passive +1% melee, ranged and spellcasting haste
Elemental Insight Passive +5% damage dealt to Elementals

The fourth is where they split:

Active racial Effect
High Order (Alliance) Read Ley Line Activate a ley line to gain +100% Health and Mana regeneration for 5 minutes
Windshaper (Horde) Skysight An Elemental Blessing granting +10% movement speed for 5 minutes

Walk on Air is the interesting one

Gliding is not a thing vanilla World of Warcraft has. It arrived in retail with Dragonriding and its ancestors, and a ten-second downward glide on a shared racial, available from level one, is a traversal tool the 2004 world was never built around.

What that does to a game with no flying, a slow mount at 40 and an unforgiving fall-damage model is not a small question. Every cliff in Azeroth is now a shortcut for one race, and the level 1–12 starting zone it ships with sits on an isle of tiered architecture.

Read Ley Line is not a small racial either

+100% Health and Mana regeneration for five minutes, on an active with no published cooldown, is a downtime racial in a game defined by downtime. Drinking between pulls is the vanilla levelling tax. Halving it for a race is the kind of thing that gets rebalanced, and the kind of thing that decides a faction for efficiency-minded levellers if it does not.

Set beside it, the Horde’s +10% run speed for five minutes is a convenience. These two are not obviously balanced against one another, and nobody is discussing them because nobody has reported the split exists.

Both can be Druids

Druid was Night Elf and Tauren only for twenty years. The Skyborne are the first new Druid race in the Classic line, on both sides, which quietly makes Alliance Skyborne the second Alliance Druid and Horde Skyborne the second Horde Druid.

What it costs

The Skyborne unlock is the $29.99 Heroic Pack or above. That pack also gates Zephras Isle, the 1–12 starting zone — so a zone is behind the paywall, not just a character model.

It does not include beta access. The pack that gets you into the beta is the $59.99 Epic. See which pack you actually need.

What nobody knows yet

  • Whether the two races share the Zephras Isle experience or have separate starting stories on the same isle.
  • Cooldowns on Walk on Air, Read Ley Line and Skysight. None are published and the client rows carry descriptions, not timings.
  • Whether Walk on Air works indoors, in battlegrounds, or while in combat.
  • Racial-to-class fit. With Read Ley Line favouring casters and healers, the Alliance Skyborne Mage looks stronger on paper than anything on the Horde side. That is a reading of two tooltips, not a tested claim.
  • Lore. Two Skyborne factions implies a split in their own history that no published material covers.

The full sixteen new race and class combinations, and the whole matrix, are on Classes and races.
