Hardcore in WoW Forever
Updated 2026-09-17 · checked against Beta build 1.60.1.69893
Hardcore is one of Forever’s four rulesets and the only one where a mistake is permanent. It does not ship on 4 November — it arrives after launch, with no date attached.
It is also the ruleset Legacy came out of. Blizzard have said directly that what they liked about Hardcore was the sight of players constantly levelling, and that the account-wide progression system exists to make that feel like it counts.
The one-way door
This is the mechanic that should decide your first character, and it is stated plainly:
Collections and Legacy Points remain account-wide across rulesets, with Hardcore as the exception. Progress, collections, and rewards earned in Hardcore can become available in other rulesets, but progress from other rulesets will not flow back into Hardcore.
Earn it in Hardcore and every character you own benefits. Earn it anywhere else and Hardcore never sees it.
The argument for going Hardcore first
Put three facts together and a conclusion appears that nobody is stating:
- Legacy Points are account-wide.
- Hardcore progress flows outward only.
- Hardcore gets its own exclusive Legacy Challenges — principal designer Kris Zierhut: “there are a bunch of hardcore specific legacy challenges to do.”
Time spent in Hardcore pays the whole account. Time spent anywhere else never pays Hardcore. If you intend to play Hardcore at all, every hour you spend elsewhere first is an hour that does not carry.
Two things blunt it, and they are real. Hardcore is not at launch, so there is nothing to go first to on 4 November. And Blizzard have not said whether Hardcore’s exclusive challenges sit inside or outside the 65-point launch total — if they are outside, the account ceiling rises when Hardcore lands, and Hardcore becomes a one-way faucet into everyone’s pool.
Death is no longer the end of the character
On death a Hardcore character can be transferred to another ruleset, including PvP. That last part is new — previous Hardcore implementations sent dead characters to a normal realm and no further.
What arrives on the other side is undocumented. Whether the character keeps Hardcore-earned rewards, whether the transfer is immediate or a choice you hold, and what a character transferred into PvP is treated as, are all unanswered.
Why this changes how we cover the rest of the site
Everywhere else in Forever, almost nothing is permanently missable — which is why this vertical does not carry the missables machinery the FFVII and FFVIII walkthroughs use.
Hardcore reverses that. The permanently lost thing is the character, and a sequenced, “this is what ends your run” guide is exactly the product those walkthroughs already are. When the hub fills out, it fills out in that shape rather than as a systems reference.
Not in the beta
The beta runs 17 September to 21 or 22 October at a level 30 cap, and Hardcore is post-launch. Nothing here has been verified in play by anyone, including us.
What nobody knows yet
- A release date. “After launch” is the whole of it.
- Whether Hardcore’s Legacy Challenges sit inside or outside the 65. The single most load-bearing unknown on this page.
- A single Hardcore challenge by name.
- What a transferred dead character keeps, and what it becomes in PvP.
- Whether Hardcore has its own camping, profession or raid rules, or plays the standard game with one life.
- Group rules. No cross-ruleset grouping is confirmed generally; whether Hardcore adds its own restrictions on top is not.
