Why this is not a minigame
Frog Drop deals Quina's level × frogs caught, and it ignores the enemy’s
stats completely.
No defence, no magic defence, no elemental affinity. The number is the number.
Which makes it the answer to the hardest fight in the game. Ozma has vast magic defence, absorbs Shadow, and cannot be hit physically at all until you finish the Friendly Monster chain. Frog Drop does not care about any of that. At 99 frogs and a party in the high sixties it lands around 6,700 a cast, every cast.
The ceiling is exact: 101 frogs at level 99 is 9,999 — the damage cap, to the digit. Two frogs past the quest’s own finish line.
If you are not going to level Quina to 99, catch more frogs to make up the difference.
Start early
Frogs respawn on real time spent away from the marsh — not story progress, not battles fought. So the quest rewards visiting early and often and punishes leaving it all to the last disc, which is when most people notice it exists.
The four marshes
They open in this order:
- Mist Continent, near the Dragon’s Gate
- Outer Continent
- Lanar Island, east of the Forgotten Continent
- Forgotten Continent
Our field data confirms four of them: the Qu’s Marsh script family has four separate pond screens, and each one declares the Gastro Fork award. Wherever you happen to be when the count comes good is where you collect it.
How to catch without ruining the pond
Walk up to a frog and hammer the button. Each is one point.
Leave at least one male and one female in every marsh. Males have yellow feet and no stripe; females have red feet and a black stripe. Empty a pond completely and the respawn rate collapses.
The gold frog speeds regeneration up considerably. Leave it where it is — or, if you want the population to grow somewhere else instead, eating it forces it to reappear at another marsh. That is a real technique rather than a joke, though it sounds like one.
The sustainable pattern is: visit, take the surplus, leave the three, go and do something else for a while.

Two of those are worth more than they look.
Battle Boots at 45 is the ingredient the Disc 4 Black Mage Village shop turns into Running Shoes (Battle Boots + Emerald, 12,000 gil), and Daguerreo turns into a Bracer. It is otherwise a 6,500-gil synthesis or a steal off Garland.
Silver Fork at 23 is otherwise a steal from Tantarian, who has a deadline.
Quale
Catching the ninety-ninth frog starts the fight; there is no way to decline it.
Bring water resistance — and status protection, because he brings several. Have Zidane steal the Ninja Gear, the Glutton’s Robe and the Robe of Lords while Quina drains his MP with Magic Hammer. He drops four Elixirs.
(On his hit points: our raw field reads 65,535, and so does one published guide. Most print 55,535. Roughly twenty-five boss records in this game carry a ten-thousand offset in the stored data and the lower figure is the one you fight — but this is one of the records where the published record itself is split.)
Where it fits with everything else
Do the frogs before Ozma, not after. The chain is: catch frogs → Frog Drop scales → Ozma becomes a fight you can actually finish. Everything else about that fight — the Friendly Monster chain making physical attacks connect, Pumice Pieces absorbing Shadow and Holy, keeping nobody’s level on a multiple of 4 or 5 — is mitigation. Frog Drop is the damage.
And it costs you nothing but attention paid early. The marshes are on the way to places you are already going.
Method
The four-marsh structure is read from the game’s own field scripts: four pond screens in the Qu’s Marsh family, each declaring the Gastro Fork, alongside two Master’s House screens, four shores, two thickets, a cave and an entrance.
That the award sits in all four is an ordinary example of a rule we have leaned on all through this project — an award in a field script is evidence about the room, not about the visit. Four rooms can declare one Gastro Fork, and there is still only one Gastro Fork.
