Final Fantasy IX · walkthrough
Esto Gaza
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
A temple at the foot of the volcano. Six screens, and almost nothing in it — except a shop that is worth the stop on its own.
Take the Wing Edge
It is behind the shop counter, on the right. Walk round the desk. It is free.
Buy the Octagon Rod
4,500 gil, and this is the only shop in the game that sells it.
It teaches Vivi Firaga, Blizzaga and Thundaga — three tier-three spells from one purchase. Three guides single it out as the reason to stop here.
Buy Vaccines
The boss at the top of the mountain inflicts Virus, which stops you gaining any AP from the fight. Vaccines fix it. Buy several.
The rest of the shop
It is the best-stocked one you have seen in a while — Scissor Fangs, the Silver Fork, Zorlin Shape, Gold Armor, Diamond Gloves. If you have money, spend it.
Mogrika is on the terrace
Save, and take her letter for Moolan, who is up at Mount Gulug. You are going there next, so carry it.
Before you go up
The bishop will let you rest for 100 gil, and he is the one who tells you that Kuja came through here with Eiko.
Game Notes
Esto Gaza is a shop with a cathedral around it, and the game is honest about that.
There is nothing to explore. No puzzle, no chest hidden behind a pillar, no optional scene. You walk in, buy things, talk to a priest who tells you where the villain went, and leave.
What is strange is how much the shop matters. A single rod here hands Vivi his entire tier-three spell list in one transaction, which is the biggest single power jump available to him in the game, and it is sitting on a counter in a building nobody would call a dungeon.
Final Fantasy IX puts a lot of its best things in rooms you have no reason to search. Occasionally it puts one on a shelf with a price on it instead.
Worth doing on a first run
Nothing here needs tracking on a story run.
How this page was made
Researched across 5 community walkthroughs and written from scratch — no source’s wording appears here.
Completionist mode. Full spoilers, in play order, with every permanent loss called out before you reach it. 2 entries below are marked where our sources disagree with each other — we have not picked a winner for you.
Two Wing Edges, and the guide everyone doubted was right
This is a small, clean result and it came out of an accident.
We researched Esto Gaza and Mount Gulug in parallel, with two separate passes that could not see each other’s findings. They came back disagreeing.
The Esto Gaza pass: seven publishers of seven describe a free Wing Edge behind the shop counter here, distinguished in every one of them from the priced stock.
The Mount Gulug pass: most publishers list a single Wing Edge for this chapter and put it near Moolan at Mount Gulug. One publisher — Game8 — lists two, one in each place, and the pass read that as a self-contradiction inside a page that covers both locations.
Our field data carries a Wing Edge in each, in separate scripts, in separate field blocks, with separate offsets.
So the reconciliation that fits everything is the boring one: there are two Wing Edges, in two adjacent areas, and Game8 is right. What looked like one guide contradicting itself is one guide covering both locations on a single page and correctly listing both items — while the guides that split the two locations onto separate pages each list the one they are writing about.
Worth recording because the failure mode is subtle. A publisher that merges two areas onto one page looks unreliable next to publishers that separate them, and its extra entry reads as duplication. Here the merged page is the only one that holds both true facts at once.
It is also the fourth time a research pass has produced a “publisher self-contradiction” that turned out not to be one — after Tantarian’s Ramuh Card, Caves of Narshe’s Soulcage fire reading, and Jegged’s Survival Vest. A disagreement surfaced by a summarising fetch is not a disagreement until it has been re-read.
The Octagon Rod is the reason to stop
4,500 gil, and this is the only shop in the game that carries it. It teaches Vivi Firaga, Blizzaga and Thundaga — three tier-three spells from one purchase, which is the largest single power increase available to him anywhere.
Three publishers single it out. It is the kind of thing a route-shaped guide handles badly, because it is not an event, not a chest and not attached to a story beat — it is a line on a shop list in a town you pass through.
The shop is well stocked besides: Scissor Fangs, the Silver Fork, the Zorlin Shape, Gold Armor, Diamond Gloves, and priced lists from three publishers that agree to the gil.
And buy Vaccines, because the boss at the top of the mountain inflicts Virus, which blocks AP gain from the fight entirely. Three publishers say so here and four say it again at Mount Gulug.
One publisher says this shop sells nothing
Game8 states the Esto Gaza shop carries no weapons and no armour, listing consumables only, under a moogle called Mogtaka.
Three publishers give matching priced lists of both, and Mogtaka is the moogle at Mount Gulug, not here — this town’s moogle is Mogrika, named by five sources.
So that particular claim is a page-merge artifact of the same kind that produced the Wing Edge confusion above, running the other way: the merged page correctly holds two Wing Edges and incorrectly holds one shop.
A separate single-source claim we are not carrying: one wiki summary says the shop “exclusively sells Mythril items” and names a Mythril Sword. No priced list includes one.
Feather Circle is ours leaking in from the world map
Our field data files a Feather Circle — level 13, 619 HP, an enemy first met back at Fossil Roo — under this area’s scene prefix.
Three publishers give Garuda alone for the town itself, one of them a FAQ organised specifically by area. A fourth lists six species under a heading that covers the town and the world map around it without separating them.
So the likeliest reading is that our scene prefix is shared with, or adjacent to, the Lost Continent field encounters, and a low-level world-map species has been filed under the town. Not a publisher dispute — a scoping problem on our side, and the third of its kind after the Iifa Tree’s split blocks and Alexandria’s merged visits.
Garuda itself is real and worth knowing: 3,521 HP at level 35, and Quina can eat one for White Wind.
Nothing here is urgent
Esto Gaza survives all of Disc 3 and most of Disc 4. Three sources place its closure at the Shimmering Island, deep in the endgame — the same event that seals Conde Petie, the Desert Palace, Fossil Roo, Oeilvert, the Iifa Tree and a long list besides.
One publisher compresses that to “once you reach Disc 4 you cannot return”, which is imprecise enough to cost a reader the shop. We render the later trigger and say plainly that it is not urgent.
No ATEs and no Stiltzkin — eight publishers and none documents either. There is a courting couple by the altar who react if you talk to the wrong one, which is flavour rather than a scene, and only one guide mentions it.
Game Notes
The accidental experiment is the interesting part of this area.
We did not set out to test anything. We split two adjacent locations between two research passes because one was small and one was large, and the passes had no visibility into each other. They came back with incompatible accounts of a Wing Edge, and each had independently written off the one guide that held both halves.
That guide’s only sin was covering two places on one page — which, in a corpus where every other structural problem we have found comes from separating things that belong together, is worth sitting with. Merging Esto Gaza and Mount Gulug made Game8 wrong about the shop and right about the item, and both errors have the same cause.
There is no rule to extract from that except the one we already have, stated more plainly: a publisher is not reliable or unreliable. A page is right or wrong about a particular fact, and the thing that makes it wrong is usually structural rather than careless.
