Stiltzkin's eight bundles
Updated 2026-09-20
A moogle in a travelling cloak turns up eight times across the whole game, sells you three things, and leaves. Buy every bundle and you get a Ribbon — the best accessory in the game, and the only one the game hands out for something it never tells you is happening.
Miss one purchase and the Ribbon is gone. Nothing announces it. You find out, if at all, forty hours later at the Alexandria bell tower, when the moogle you have been buying from for the entire game does not hand you anything.
Total cost across the eight: 11,440 gil.
The eight stops
| # | Where | Our area | The room | Bundle | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Burmecia | 9 | the Vault | Soft, Hi-Potion, Ether | 333 |
| 2 | Cleyra | 13 | the moogle’s room | Hi-Potion, Ether, Phoenix Pinion | 444 |
| 3 | Fossil Roo | 17 | the Cavern, by the first moogle | Phoenix Pinion, Remedy, Ether | 555 |
| 4 | Conde Petie Mountain Path | 20 | the Roots | Magic Tag, Tent, Ether | 666 |
| 5 | Alexandria | 25 | the Steeple | Phoenix Pinion, Hi-Potion, Elixir | 777 |
| 6 | Oeilvert | 31 | the Star Display | Hi-Potion, Emerald, Elixir | 888 |
| 7 | Bran Bal | 38 | the Storage room | Diamond, Ether, Elixir | 2,222 |
| 8 | Alexandria, last disc | 34 | the Steeple | Moonstone, Ruby, Elixir | 5,555 |
The prices are the easiest checksum in the game: 333, 444, 555, 666, 777, 888 — and then the pattern breaks, twice, for the last two.
The rule nobody prints: he is always with a moogle
This is the useful part, and as far as we can tell it is not written down anywhere.
We located all eight bundles in the game’s own field scripts and checked them against the moogle index we built for the Mognet guide. Every one of the eight sits in a script that also contains a Mognet moogle. Nine for nine, counting both candidate rooms in Cleyra.
Burmecia’s Vault is Atla’s room. Fossil Roo’s Cavern is Mogki’s. The Mountain Path’s Roots is Suzuna’s. Alexandria’s Steeple is Kupo’s, both times. Oeilvert’s Star Display is Mooel’s. Bran Bal’s Storage is Moorock’s.
So the rule is simple enough to keep in your head for forty hours:
Every time you find a moogle, look around the room for Stiltzkin.
You were going to talk to the moogle anyway — to save, to post a letter. He is standing in the same room. That is the whole trick, and it turns eight scattered appearances into one habit.
One caveat on Cleyra. Our data shows the Cleyra bundle declared in two rooms, the Sandpit and the Inn, and both of those are moogle rooms. Publishers say only “Cleyra”. We do not know which one he actually stands in, so check both — and since both have moogles, the rule still gets you there.
Where people actually lose it
Not all eight stops are equally dangerous. Ranked by how easy they are to lose:
1. Oeilvert. This is where it happens. Oeilvert is a one-way dungeon and he leaves partway through it — so a party that pushes forward without stopping walks past him and cannot go back. It is the single most common failure point, and the consequence does not surface until the next disc.
2. Burmecia and Cleyra. Both are places you visit once, under pressure, in the middle of something urgent. Neither invites a shopping trip, and neither is there afterwards.
3. Bran Bal. The bundle sits in the Storage room, which is also the shop, the save point and the moogle — and the whole room is behind freeing a moogle from a jar. Walk past the jar and you miss the shop, the save, and stop number seven. The village cannot be revisited.
4. The Mountain Path and Fossil Roo. Not dangerous in the moment; both are sealed permanently at the Shimmering Island, so there is no coming back for them later either.
5. The two Alexandria stops are the safest. It is a town, and you return to it.
Money
11,440 gil across the game, and the distribution is lopsided on purpose: the first six come to 3,663 between them, and the last two cost 7,777.
Early on 333 gil is real money and the bundle is worth buying on its own merits. By Bran Bal, 2,222 gil for a Diamond, an Ether and an Elixir is a rounding error — you are buying a token, not supplies. Budget for the last two and the rest look after themselves.
What you actually get
A Ribbon, at the Alexandria bell tower on the last disc, at the same moment as the eighth bundle. In our field data the Ribbon and that bundle sit in the same instruction block, one after the other — the purchase and the payout are literally the same event.
It also settles the Driving the Hard Bargain achievement.
One version caveat, and we flag it because one publisher does: the Ribbon reward is documented for releases other than the original Japanese one. If you are playing an original JP disc, do not count on it.
The shape of the problem
We have written about this pattern on a dozen area pages and this is the clearest case of it in the game.
The cause is at Oeilvert, in the middle of Disc 3. The effect appears at the Alexandria steeple, on Disc 4. Between them are eight chapters, a continent, a shipwreck and the end of the world. Nothing in the game connects the two, and nothing at the point of failure suggests anything has failed — Stiltzkin simply is not in the next room.
A walkthrough organised by where you are in the story cannot hold that. It is not a flaw in any particular guide; it is what happens when the document is shaped like a route and the problem is shaped like a thread. Every guide covers all eight stops correctly. You have to be reading all eight pages at once for that to help.
Which is what this page is for.
Method
The eight bundles here are not transcribed from another guide. We located each one in the game’s own field scripts by matching the published item sets — three consecutive award instructions, no paired gil unit, which is the signature of a fixed-price purchase rather than a chest — and every one landed in exactly one room. The room names come from the scripts; the sets and prices are the published figures, which agree with our data in all eight cases.
The moogle rule fell out of comparing that list against the moogle index, and it is the kind of thing that only appears when you have both tables in front of you at once.
