The Knight's House monsters
Updated 2026-09-20
A man in Treno keeps monsters in his basement and will let you fight them. Four of them, one at a time, across three discs — which is the whole difficulty, because a quest you visit once every ten hours is a quest you forget.
| # | Monster | Disc | Level | HP | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Griffin | 2 | 16 | 1,470 | Tonberry Card |
| 2 | Catoblepas | 3 | 32 | 3,727 | 15,000 gil |
| 3 | Amdusias | 3 | 42 | 6,578 | Running Shoes |
| 4 | Behemoth | 4 | 71 | 24,123 | Circlet |
Our field data holds four reward awards in that room across the two visit blocks, and the battle table holds four monster records in one scene family at ascending levels. Both line up with the published list exactly.
The one that closes
Amdusias is missable. It becomes available once you have the Hilda Garde III and before you leave for Ipsen’s Castle, and if you go on without fighting it there is no way back — the guides are explicit that a missed fight cannot be re-initiated.
That window is the same one that swallows Conde Petie, the Desert Palace, Esto Gaza and everything else the Shimmering Island seals. Fight Amdusias on the same trip you do your last shopping.
The last one is the best experience in the game
Behemoth pays 53,168 experience, and our battle table shows the Knight’s House record is byte-identical to the Behemoth you meet as a random encounter in the Crystal World — same level, same hit points, same payout.
Which means that on Disc 4 this basement holds the highest-paying single encounter in the game outside a superboss, for free, in a town you can walk into. It is more than twice what a Mover formation gives.
There is no way to repeat it. But it is there once, and most people fight it for the Circlet without noticing what else they are being paid.
A small oddity
Amdusias gives no experience and no gil — the fight’s whole value is the Running Shoes. It is the only one of the four that pays nothing, and it is also the only one that can be permanently missed, which is either a coincidence or a designer deciding that a missable fight should not also be a missable levelling opportunity.
(It is not the only Amdusias in the game — there is a second, tougher one in Pandemonium, which does pay.)
Running Shoes, in context
The Running Shoes here are one of four places to find a pair — the others being a chest at Quan’s Dwelling, Tantarian’s drop, and a steal from Hades in Memoria.
They are also synthesizable at the Disc 4 Black Mage Village shop, from Battle Boots and an Emerald for 12,000 gil, so losing this one is not fatal. They teach Auto-Haste, which is worth having early rather than correctly.
How the rewards were confirmed
Three of the four rewards sit in our field data as ordinary tagged-union awards and match the published list on sight: 15,000 gil, Running Shoes, Circlet.
The fourth is more interesting. It reads as an id in the 512–611 band, which we had decoded as the game’s hundred Tetra Master cards but could not name individual members of. This one is id 557, which is index 45 in that band — and index 45 in the game’s own enemy table is the Tonberry card.
Jegged says the Griffin reward is the Tonberry Card.
That is one of three independent confirmations that finished off the card decode, and it came out of a basement in Treno. The others are on the Tetra Master page.
