Mognet, and every moogle in the game

Updated 2026-09-20

Moogles hand you letters addressed to other moogles. You carry them. That is the entire mechanic, and it runs the length of the game.

It ends with a Protect Ring from Artemicion at Mognet Central — and getting there needs three things at once that no single page tells you about together.

Before anything else: two dependencies

You cannot finish Mognet without the chocobo sidequest. Mognet Central is on an island north of the Outer Continent, reachable only by a chocobo with the Ocean ability, and you get in by using a Dead Pepper on a crack in the mountain. If you have not been playing Chocobo Hot & Cold, the last step of Mognet is closed to you and nothing in the letter chain says so.

And you need a Superslick, which is not a moogle item at all. It comes from Ruby, at Alexandria’s mini-theatre. The final letter tells you; if you are not reading letters, it does not.

Every moogle in the game

This is the part no published guide has, and it is the reason this page exists. We indexed all 45 Mognet rooms out of the game’s own field data and checked every one against the published moogle lists. If a room is on this table, there is a moogle in it. If it is not, there is not — and that second half is the useful one, because it tells you when to stop looking.

Five places have two moogles — Oeilvert, Mount Gulug, Fossil Roo, the Desert Palace and Pandemonium — and Cleyra has four. Those are the places people find one and move on.

Where there are no moogles, despite appearances

Madain Sari is full of moogles. Eiko lives with six of them and not one is on the network — the published guides are explicit that they have no delivery entries. Do not go looking for a letter there.

Mognet Central has moogles too, but they receive; they are not stops on the route.

Terra and Memoria have none at all. Terra is the first place in the game with no moogle in it, and the final dungeon is the second. If you are in either and hunting for a mailbox, stop.

The Disc 4 chain, which is the one that matters

Earlier letters are optional and mostly pay Kupo Nuts. The final chain is mandatory for the Protect Ring, it is six deliveries long, and it runs in a fixed order:

# From To
1 Kupo — Alexandria Steeple Atla — Burmecia
2 Atla — Burmecia Mogryo — Black Mage Village
3 Mogryo — Black Mage Village Kumool — Ipsen’s Castle
4 Kumool — Ipsen’s Castle Mois — Qu’s Marsh, by the Fossil Roo entrance
5 Mois — Qu’s Marsh Noggy — Daguerreo, upper level
6 Noggy — Daguerreo Kupo — Alexandria Steeple

Then the Superslick, then Mognet Central, then Artemicion.

Two stops on that list look impossible and are not

Ipsen’s Castle. By Disc 4 a lot of the map is sealed and Ipsen’s Castle feels like it should be part of that. It is not. The castle stays open specifically because this chain routes through Kumool inside it — it is the one dungeon on the Forgotten Continent with nothing permanently missable in it, and players who assumed it closes and rushed through are on record regretting it.

Fossil Roo. Fossil Roo is sealed by the Shimmering Island, so step four reads like a dead end. It is not: Mois is at the Qu’s Marsh side of the entrance, outside the sealed area. You never go into the tunnel.

What actually gets missed

Earlier letters, one at a time, in places that close. The Shimmering Island seals Conde Petie and its Mountain Path, the Desert Palace, Esto Gaza, Mount Gulug, Fossil Roo, both Gates, the Iifa Tree, Observatory Mountain and Pinnacle Rocks — and moogles in eleven of those rooms go with them.

Bran Bal, which cannot be revisited, and whose moogle is trapped in a jar until you let him out. Walk past the jar and you miss the moogle, the shop, the save point and a Stiltzkin bundle in one go.

Oeilvert, which is one-way.

The practical rule is the boring one: talk to every moogle, every time, in every room on the table above. Checking costs a button press. The alternative is discovering on Disc 4 that a chain you cannot restart is broken.

Kupo Nuts

A separate thread running through the same moogles. Mogmi and Moguta at Gizamaluke’s Grotto start it, and you accumulate nuts through deliveries and trade them to Moguta for items — Elixir, Phoenix Pinion, Tent, Ether, an Extension, and the Aloha T-Shirt, which is collected at Black Mage Village and is the only purely comic reward in the game.

It shares the moogles with Mognet but not the failure conditions. Treat it as a bonus for doing what Mognet already requires.

Why this page has a table in it

Every published account of Mognet is route-shaped — a letter at a time, in play order, spread across two dozen chapters of a walkthrough. That is the right way to write a walkthrough and the wrong shape for this problem, because the question a player actually has is never “what is the next letter”. It is “is there a moogle in this room, and have I already talked to it?”

That question needs a list of rooms, and nobody had one.

Method

The index above is not transcribed from another guide. The game marks every Mognet moogle’s room in its own field scripts with a key item our tables cannot name — 58 instances across 45 rooms, never paired with a gil unit and so not a chest, and with no other concentration in that part of the id space anywhere close to it.

We checked the reading rather than assuming it. Five locations have exactly two Mognet moogles in the published lists, and our data marks exactly two rooms in each, with the room names matching. Three moogles relocate during the game — Monty, Mois and Mosco — and both ends of all three moves are marked. And the two large moogle populations that are not on the letter route, Madain Sari and Mognet Central, carry no marker at all, which is what the reading predicts and is the strongest evidence for it.

We also wrote down a test before we could run it: if the marker means Mognet moogle, then Memoria and the Crystal World — which carry none — should have no moogle. The published record agrees: there is none.

Two rows of our raw table are the same Lindblum room under a truncated label, and we have not counted it twice. Forty-five rooms, not forty-six.

One thing this method cannot do: name the moogles. Our data resolves rooms; the published lists resolve names, and they do not entirely agree with each other about which moogle is in which Alexandria room. Where this page names a moogle, the name comes from them.
