The list

Character Weapon Where
Zidane Ultima Weapon Dead Pepper dig at the Shimmering Island ruins, Disc 4, Ocean chocobo
Vivi Mace of Zeus Memoria, after Kraken — the platform up the ladder
Dagger Whale Whisker Chocograph #18 (Ocean)
Steiner Excalibur II Memoria, and only under twelve hours of total play
Steiner, in practice Ragnarok Chocograph #21 (Outer Island)
Freya Dragon’s Hair Dead Pepper dig northwest of Oeilvert, Mountain chocobo
Quina Gastro Fork 99 frogs from Qu’s Marsh, then beat Quale
Eiko Angel Flute Memoria, after Maliris — by the stairway
Amarant Rune Claws Memoria, after Maliris — left of the stair bottom

Half of them are behind the chocobo minigame

This is the fact worth leading with, because nothing in the game says it:

Four of the eight are chocobo treasures. Dagger’s and Steiner’s practical one are Chocographs; Zidane’s and Freya’s are Dead Pepper dig spots that need a chocobo with the right ability to reach.

Tiger Racket, the good second-best racket for Dagger and Eiko, is a fifth — an Ocean chocobo at Quan’s Dwelling, where Zidane inspects the foam and you dig.

So if you skip Chocobo Hot & Cold you do not simply miss a minigame. You finish the game with four characters on their second-best weapon, and one of those characters is Zidane.

Three of them are in Memoria, and Memoria is one-way

Vivi’s Mace of Zeus, Eiko’s Angel Flute and Amarant’s Rune Claws are all in Memoria, and so is the Excalibur II. Memoria has a door you cannot walk back through.

All three are in rooms you pass anyway; all three are off to one side.

  • Mace of Zeus — after Kraken. Climb the ladder and check the corners of the first platform. One corner has a card phantom, the other has the weapon.
  • Angel Flute — after Maliris, by the stairway near the hidden save point. It teaches Holy.
  • Rune Claws — after Maliris, left of the bottom of the stairs, in a part of the screen that is off-camera.

(A note on rooms: our field data files the Mace of Zeus one screen along from where two publishers put it, and our zone labels have missed eight times now. Take the publishers’ directions.)

Steiner has two, and you almost certainly want the second

Excalibur II is in Memoria, in the hidden spot left of the final door, and it is only there if your total play time is under twelve hours when you reach that screen.

Twelve hours from a new file to the last room of the game. That is a planned speedrun, not something a normal playthrough recovers, and the honest advice is that if you are reading this page you have already missed it.

Take Ragnarok instead. It is Chocograph #21, alongside the Genji Armor, and it is a perfectly good weapon that does not require restructuring your life.

(The ordinary Excalibur — not the II — is a different thing entirely: it is the end of the Treno auction resale chain, it lives at Daguerreo, and it teaches Climhazzard. Worth having, not an ultimate.)

Quina’s is a fishing quest

Catch 99 frogs across Qu’s Marsh, then beat Quale.

Our field data has a nice detail here: the Gastro Fork is declared at all four marsh scripts, not one. There are four Qu’s Marshes on the world map and the award sits in every one of them, so wherever you happen to be when the count comes good is where you get it.

Frog-catching is worth doing on its own merits regardless — Frog Drop scales with how many you have caught, and at 99 it is doing around 6,700 a cast, which is the single most reliable source of damage against Ozma.

What to do if you are late

Nothing here is truly lost except the Excalibur II, and that one was never realistically available.

  • Memoria’s three are gone once you pass the door, and the door is at the very end. If you are still in Memoria, go back for them.
  • The four chocobo weapons can all be dug up on Disc 4. The chocobo quest has no deadline.
  • Quina’s has no deadline either.

What our data could and could not see

Worth setting out, because the split is unusually clean.

Our field-award tables hold exactly four of the ultimate weapons — the Mace of Zeus and Rune Claws in Memoria, the Excalibur II at the Gate to Space, and the Gastro Fork at all four marshes. Eiko’s Angel Flute is there too, as an unnamed award in the right room.

They hold none of the other four — no Ultima Weapon, no Whale Whisker, no Ragnarok, no Dragon’s Hair.

That is not a gap. Those four are world-map treasures dug out of the ground, and our tables cover field scripts — rooms — not the overworld. The four we can see are in rooms; the four we cannot are in dirt. The scope line falls exactly where it should, which is the most reassuring thing a data check can do.

Synthesis feeds several of these

Two of the Chocographs matter more than their contents suggest:

  • #17 Sea at Dusk gives a White Robe, and Daguerreo turns a White Robe and a Black Robe into the Robe of Lords — a recipe that exists nowhere else.
  • #22 Outer Island 2 gives a Pumice Piece, the third in the game after the Ark and Ozma steals, and the thing you want several of before fighting Ozma.
  • #16 Forgotten Plains gives a Demon’s Mail, whose only other source is Tantarian’s 0.39% steal slot.

And the Disc 4 Black Mage Village shop synthesizes the Masamune from a Zorlin Shape and an Orichalcon, both of which you buy at Bran Bal — which is a weapon comfortably in ultimate territory for Zidane if the Shimmering Island dig has not happened yet. It can also be stolen from Maliris in Memoria.
