Synthesis

Updated 2026-09-20

Two items go in, one better item comes out. The full recipe list is long, mostly cheap, and well covered elsewhere — the early shops all sell roughly the same dozen things and you can buy those recipes at any of them.

What is not well covered is the structure: which shop has something no other shop has, which ingredients stop being purchasable, and which recipes quietly depend on finishing an entirely different sidequest.

The six shops

Shop Where Opens
Torres’ Lindblum Disc 1
Treno’s Treno Disc 2
Black Cat Black Mage Village Disc 2, and restocks heavily on Disc 4
Alexandria’s Alexandria (two of them) Disc 3
Synthesis Expert Daguerreo Disc 3
Hades Memoria, after beating him Disc 4

The first four converge on much the same catalogue. Three shops hold things nobody else does, and those are the only ones worth planning a trip around.

What only Daguerreo sells

Result Ingredients Cost
Sargatanas Gladius + Zorlin Shape 12,000
Thief Gloves Mythril Armlet + Sargatanas 50,000
White Robe Gaia Gear + Jade Armlet 8,000
Black Robe Gaia Gear + N-Kai Armlet 8,000
Glutton’s Robe Mythril Fork + Cotton Robe 6,000
Promist Ring Chimera Armlet + Ruby 6,000
Battle Boots Feather Boots + Wing Edge 6,500
Rebirth Ring Diamond + Anklet 7,000
Angel Earrings Fairy Earrings + Barette 8,000

White Robe and Black Robe matter more than they look, because Hades turns them into the Robe of Lords and there is no other route to that recipe.

What only the Disc 4 Black Cat shop sells

Result Ingredients Cost
Masamune Zorlin Shape + Orichalcon 16,000
Grand Armor Mythril Sword + Mythril Armor 45,000
Rosetta Ring Madain’s Ring + Holy Lance 24,000
Running Shoes Battle Boots + Emerald 12,000
Brave Suit Mythril Vest + Mythril Rod 26,000
Light Robe Magician Robe + Glass Armlet 20,000
Rubber Suit Minerva’s Plate + Egoist’s Armlet 20,000
Grand Helm Cross Helm + Power Belt 20,000
Gauntlets Coronet + Rosetta Ring 20,000
Bracer Battle Boots + Venetia Shield 24,000
Duel Claws Dragon’s Claws + Tiger Fangs 16,000
Priest’s Racket Air Racket + Cachusha 11,000

This is the shop most people never revisit. All three of Black Mage Village’s shops restock on the last disc and nothing in the game mentions it.

What only Hades sells

Result Ingredients Cost
Robe of Lords White Robe + Black Robe 30,000
Save the Queen Javelin + Silver Gloves 50,000
Protect Ring Dark Matter + Rebirth Ring 40,000
Tin Armor Hammer + Ore 50,000
Pumice Pumice Piece + Pumice Piece 50,000
Pumice Piece Hammer + Pumice 25,000

Getting to this shop means finding a hidden door behind a rock formation in Memoria’s ocean room and beating a level-92 superboss. It is worth it for the four items above that exist nowhere else.

The three chains that reach outside synthesis

1. Zorlin Shape → Sargatanas → Thief Gloves, and Masamune

The last Zorlin Shapes in the game are at Bran Bal, at 6,000 gil each, in a shop that is itself hidden behind freeing a moogle from a jar, in a village you cannot revisit. Esto Gaza is sealed by then and Daguerreo stops stocking them.

You need three: one for the Masamune, one for a Sargatanas you keep, and one for a Sargatanas the Thief Gloves consume. Four or five if you want spares.

And the chain crosses two shops: Sargatanas and Thief Gloves at Daguerreo, Masamune at Black Mage Village on Disc 4. Neither shop’s page mentions the other, and the Bran Bal shop page does not mention either.

2. The Hammer means finishing all thirteen Stellazzio

Two Hades recipes take a Hammer — Tin Armor, and the Pumice Piece — and the only Hammer in the game is Queen Stella’s thirteenth and last Stellazzio reward.

So: thirteen coins, including one that only exists after the other twelve are handed in, to unlock two recipes in a shop behind a superboss. That is the longest dependency in the game and no page states it.

3. The Protect Ring means beating Ozma

Protect Ring = Dark Matter + Rebirth Ring, and Hades’ shop needs Hades.

Dark Matter’s reliable source is Ozma — it is the only enemy in the game that carries it, on the steal list and three of four drop slots, and there is no chest anywhere holding one. It also turns up at the Treno auction, where two publishers note the bidding for it is fierce.

(We originally wrote that Ozma was the only source at all. That was an exclusivity claim made across a blind spot — see the auction guide.)

You can also simply find a Protect Ring — Artemicion gives one for finishing Mognet, and it turns up in the Chocobo Hot & Cold dig pool — so the synthesis is for a second one, or for completionists.

And a circular one, for its own sake

Hades will make a Pumice out of two Pumice Pieces for 50,000, and a Pumice Piece out of a Hammer and a Pumice for 25,000. You can convert between them in both directions, indefinitely, for money.

There is a real use for it: Pumice Pieces absorb Shadow and Holy, which is exactly what Ozma throws, so a party wants several — and the Pumice itself teaches Dagger her last summon. Steal a Piece from Ark at Oeilvert and another from Ozma, and the shop covers the rest.

Ingredients you can lose

Most synthesis ingredients are common. These are not:

  • Zorlin Shape — Bran Bal is the last counter in the game.
  • Orichalcon — 17,000 gil, and Bran Bal is where you will see it.
  • Dark Matter — Ozma is the only enemy that carries one and there is no chest for it; the auction is the other route, and unreliable.
  • Hammer — the thirteenth Stellazzio reward, and the only place in the game’s field data it appears.
  • Emerald — the Nymph in the Friendly Monster chain gives one, and it is not in the Ore-plus-consumable gem list that covers the other six gems.

The gem recipes are the cheap safety net. Ore plus a consumable makes a Garnet, Amethyst, Peridot, Sapphire, Opal, Topaz or — with a Dead Pepper — a Lapis Lazuli, for a few hundred gil each. Since forty-six enemy species carry Ore, any recipe that wants one of those gems is effectively unblockable.

One thing worth doing early

The Black Cat shop on Disc 2 already sells the Reflect Ring (Anklet + Madain’s Ring, 7,000) and Madain’s Ring itself. Those are cheap for what they do and most players meet them much later at four times the price in effort.

Method

Shop locations are cross-checked against the game’s own room table, which carries a Synthesist room at Alexandria, Lindblum and Treno and a Synthesis room at Black Mage Village, in each of the visit blocks where a publisher places the shop. The recipe lists and prices are the published ones.

The three dependency chains are ours — they are not stated on any synthesis page we read, because each one has its two halves in different documents: a shop list here, a sidequest reward there. That is the recurring shape of this whole project. The corpus has every fact in it. What it does not have is the sentence that puts two of them next to each other.
