The optional bosses

Updated 2026-09-20

Five optional fights, and they are not a tier — they are three different kinds of thing.

Fight Where HP Why bother
Tantarian Alexandria library, Disc 3 only 21,997 Running Shoes, Demon’s Mail — and it has a deadline
Quale Qu’s Marsh 55,535 Ninja Gear, Glutton’s Robe, Robe of Lords
Hades Memoria, hidden 55,535 Opens the master synthesis shop
Ozma Chocobo’s Air Garden 55,535 Pumice, Dark Matter — and it is the wall
(Nova Dragon) Memoria, mandatory 54,940 not optional, listed for comparison

Three of them — Quale, Hades and Ozma — sit at exactly the same number, and that number is the engine’s sixteen-bit ceiling. They also pay the experience cap. They are not scaled against each other; they are all simply maxed.

Tantarian is the one with a clock

Everything else here waits for you. This one does not.

Tantarian lives in the Alexandria castle library, and the library closes when you go up the central tower. There are two chances at it across the game and the second is the last. One missable-items guide puts the instruction plainly: fight Tantarian before ascending the tower.

Trigger it by examining a book on the bottom-left standing bookshelf. It fights as a closed book and is only properly vulnerable once it opens to its middle pages, so hit it while shut until it does.

21,997 HP at level 41, weak to Holy. Steal the Demon’s Mail if you have the patience — it is on the 0.39% slot, which is a lottery inside a long fight — and the Silver Fork if you do not. It drops Running Shoes.

(One publisher says Tantarian drops nothing. Six say Running Shoes, and the battle record has it in the guaranteed drop slot.)

The same castle visit holds the Leo Stellazzio, in the Neptune statue room, and the castle interior never reopens. Two windows, one visit. Do both.

Hades opens the last shop

Hades is behind a rock formation in Memoria’s ocean room — a hidden door in a dungeon most players are hurrying through.

Beating him opens the master synthesist’s shop, which is the only source of several late recipes and the reason he is worth finding at all rather than skipping.

All four of his steal slots are filled, which is unusual: Reflect Ring, Running Shoes, Battle Boots, Robe of Lords. He nulls Earth, absorbs Shadow and is weak to Holy.

Quale

At Qu’s Marsh, and the least discussed of the three ceiling fights. Steal the Ninja Gear, the Glutton’s Robe and the Robe of Lords; he drops four Elixirs. Absorbs Water, weak to Thunder.

Ozma

The Air Garden, from a cave at the back of the furthest island — which means the whole of Chocobo Hot & Cold is a prerequisite. The earliest you can be there is Disc 3, around the time you get the Hilda Garde III, which is much sooner than most people attempt it.

Nulls Earth. Absorbs Shadow. Weak to Wind and Holy. Our own data and the published element list agree exactly on all three.

Preparation that actually matters

  • Do the Friendly Monster chain first. It is what makes physical attacks connect at all. (There is a second, disputed claim about it — see below.)
  • Keep nobody’s level on a multiple of 4 or 5. Lv4 Holy and Lv5 Death both exist and both hit the whole party.
  • Equip Pumice Pieces — they absorb Shadow and Holy, which is precisely Ozma’s two best attacks. You get one by stealing from Ark at Oeilvert and another from Ozma itself.
  • Auto-Haste, Auto-Regen, Auto-Potion, and Auto-Life cast on everyone before the first turn.
  • Quina’s Frog Drop does around 6,700 a cast if you have been catching frogs, and it ignores most of what makes the fight awkward.

The disputed part

Two publishers say finishing the Friendly Monster chain also flips Ozma from absorbing Shadow to being weak to it, so that its own Doomsday damages it. A third says the quest makes Ozma attackable and does not weaken him.

Our data cannot settle it, and it is worth saying why. There are two Ozma records in the game’s battle table — and they are identical in every field: same level, same HP, same stats, same steals and drops, and both absorb Shadow. There is no variant anywhere in the table with Ozma weak to Shadow.

So if the flip happens, it is applied at runtime rather than by switching to a different stat block. That is a real possibility — this game demonstrably does things at runtime that never appear in the stored record — but it means the table cannot confirm it. Plan the fight assuming Shadow is still absorbed.

What you get

Pumice (the drop) and a Pumice Piece (the steal), plus Dark Matter, 18,312 gil, 65,535 experience and 100 AP. The Pumice teaches Dagger her last summon.

Dark Matter’s reliable source is Ozma — the only enemy in the game carrying one, on the steal list and three of the four drop slots, with no chest anywhere holding one. The Treno auction is the other route, and the bidding for it is reportedly fierce.

Afterwards Mene restores the party and hands over the Ozma card and a Strategy Guide key item, which explains how to reach an S-class treasure hunter rank.

Running Shoes: four places to find them, and one way to make them

They teach Auto-Haste and a lot of players finish the game without a pair:

  1. Quan’s Dwelling — a chest in the fishing area
  2. Treno, the Knight’s House — a chest
  3. Tantarian — the drop, and it has the deadline above
  4. Hades — steal

A missable-items guide numbers those the same way, which is a nice independent check on a list we assembled from the item tables.

And they are not actually losable. The Disc 4 synthesis shop at Black Mage Village makes them — Battle Boots + Emerald, 12,000 gil — so a pair is always reachable as long as you are willing to pay for it. Worth knowing before anyone reloads a save over a missed chest.

Method

The HP figures above are the published ones. Our raw field reads 65,535 for Quale, Hades and Ozma and 64,940 for Nova Dragon — roughly twenty-five boss records in this game carry a ten-thousand offset in the stored data, and the lower figure is the one you fight.

The element lines, the steal lists and the drop lists are read directly from the battle table and agree with the published accounts in every case we checked — which is the pattern throughout this project: the item columns match, and only the HP column does not.

The two identical Ozma records are our own observation, and we are reporting the absence of a Shadow-weak variant rather than concluding from it. This is the same boss that produced the single worst error of this project — an argument about its hit points that looked airtight and was retracted the same day — so it seemed like the right place to be careful twice.
