The Abyss and PvP in AION 2
Updated 2026-10-07 · checked against Global launch (client 2.0.5.0)
The Abyss is why AION exists as a series: the space between the Elyos and Asmodian halves of Atreia, where the two factions fight over the same ground and the Balaur fight both. It returns in AION 2 as faction warfare, alongside cross-server realm-versus-realm battles and a set of smaller, matched modes.
NC put the scale of PvP as anything from a duel to battles involving potentially hundreds of players.
The Abyss
The Abyss is Reshanta, in lower, middle and upper layers, and it mixes PvP with PvE: it is a contested zone, not an arena, and the monsters and objectives in it are as much a reason to go as the other faction.
Each layer has a map page with its islands, Empyrean Traces, elite packs and the day bosses’ spawn points: Lower, Middle and Upper Reshanta.
Access is limited by time. On the Korean service the Abyss is open to each character for a set number of hours a week, so an Abyss session is something to plan rather than something to drift into.
Matched PvP
NC list 1v1 and 4v4 arenas for the global release. The Korean service runs these modes:
- Arena of Solitude — one-on-one duels.
- Arena of Cooperation — teams of two, four teams to a match.
- Battlegrounds — ten-versus-ten team battles.
- Spacetime Rifts — scheduled invasions of the other faction’s territory.
Shugo Festival events sit alongside these as competitive mini-games rather than combat.
What PvP pays
Abyss points and PvP medals buy PvP equipment, and leaderboard rankings pay seasonal rewards. The less obvious reward is the Azphel board — one of the five Daevanion boards, and the only one paid for in battle crystals, which come from PvP. It is covered on the Classes hub.
Our read
Azphel is the reason a PvE player should read this page. A character that never fights another player finishes with one Daevanion board in five empty, and the crystals that fill it come only from here. Even an hour a week in the Abyss is progress on a board nothing else can touch.
