How to Get Anima in Final Fantasy X
Updated 2026-10-10
Full spoilers.
Anima is Seymour’s aeon — the one you fought at Macalania Temple — and her fayth is his mother, sealed in the ruined temple where Tidus first washed up in Spira. Getting her means going back to Baaj Temple with the airship, beating the fiend that guards the water, and proving you finished every Cloister of Trials properly.
She is worth it. Her Pain ignores defense and kills outright anything not immune; her Overdrive, Oblivion, is a sixteen-hit barrage and one of the biggest single attacks in the game; and she can break 9,999 damage without any help. She is also a key: Belgemine’s last round at Remiem Temple, the Magus Sisters’ rewards and the Moon Sigil for Yuna’s celestial weapon all need her.
Before you go: the six Destruction Sphere chests
The door to Anima’s fayth opens only when all six statues inside Baaj are lit, and a statue lights only if you opened that temple’s Destruction Sphere chest:
| Temple | Chest |
|---|---|
| Besaid | Rod of Wisdom |
| Kilika | Red Armlet |
| Djose | Magic Sphere |
| Macalania | Luck Sphere |
| Bevelle | HP Sphere |
| Zanarkand | Magistral Rod |
The Zanarkand one can only be opened after you have the airship, so everyone has at least one trip to make first. If you skipped Besaid or Macalania, those temples are now behind Dark Valefor and Dark Shiva. Bevelle cannot be revisited; open its chest on the way through regardless. Whether a skipped Bevelle chest actually leaves its statue dark is disputed — some players say it lights for everyone because the Destruction Sphere must be placed to finish that trial, others that the chest is what counts. The Cloisters of Trials guide has every solution and the full Bevelle discussion.
Getting to Baaj
On the airship, choose Search on the navigation map and aim at X 14, Y 57; the search allows a few squares either way. Baaj Temple is added to your destinations.
Only Tidus, Wakka and Rikku can fight underwater, so those three are your party for the first part. Before you fly:
- Stoneproof or Stone Ward on all three. This matters more than anything else.
- Deathproof or Death Ward if you have it.
- Haste, and a way to deal big damage fast — Rikku’s Mix is ideal.
Dive in and swim for the only exit on the map.
Geosgaeno
The same monster that chased Tidus at the start of the game, now fought for real. It has about 32,000 HP (sources give 30,000 and 32,767) and it is a nasty fight for a team that has not prepared.
- Stone Punch petrifies. Underwater, a petrified character shatters and is gone for the fight. Stoneproof stops it cold.
- Below half HP it adds KO Punch, which inflicts Curse (no Overdrives) and can kill outright.
- Every few turns it swallows a party member. The swallowed character can struggle free at the cost of being KO’d, or defend until it is spat back out at 1 HP — which hurts the others.
- Never finish it off while someone is inside. It spits them out with 9,999 damage to the whole party, which is a game over without Break HP Limit.
- A character with Doom on them cannot be swallowed.
The cleanest answer is Trio of 9999 from Rikku’s Mix — two Wings to Discovery, which the Remiem Temple chocobo race pays out in bulk. Otherwise, elemental strike weapons on Tidus and Wakka, Hastega, and steady damage. Steal for Water Gems. It can drop gear with No Encounters, which is worth having for the lightning and Cactuar sidequests.
Lulu’s Onion Knight
Before you go inside, swim to the far side of the pool from the temple doorway, into the small crevice where the camera shifts, and keep pressing the action button. Tidus finds a hidden chest: Onion Knight, Lulu’s celestial weapon. It needs the Celestial Mirror — see the celestial weapons guide.
The six statues
Swim to the green square on the map and dive to the temple doorway; climb the waterway and the steps. The antechamber has six statues, three on each side. Walk up to each one. If you opened its temple’s chest, a glyph lights on it. When all six are lit, the great glyph sealing the Chamber of the Fayth fades.
If one statue stays dark, the table above tells you which temple to fly back to. Grab the two chests in the room while you are here: Megalixir in the south-east corner and Mega Phoenix x4 in the south-west.
The fayth
Walk into the chamber and approach the fayth. Yuna receives Anima.
Her default kit is a heavy-hitting physical aeon with black magic from Fire up to Death and a handful of status attacks. Teach her Haste, Protect, Shell and the big black magic from the Aeon menu as your items allow.
What she opens
- Belgemine’s second round at Remiem Temple: Anima, Yojimbo and the Magus Sisters. Beating all three earns the Moon Sigil for Nirvana. See the Remiem Temple guide.
- Anima is the obvious lead aeon for most of Belgemine’s first round, too.
- On this release there is also a Dark Anima somewhere in Spira — a separate fight, covered in the Dark Aeons guide.
If the door will not open
You missed a chest. Check in this order:
- Zanarkand — the one everyone forgets, because it is the only one that has to be done after the airship.
- Macalania — the bridge puzzle makes it easy to leave without the chest.
- Besaid — easy to skip on the first visit, guarded by Dark Valefor now.
- Kilika and Djose — fly back and solve the Cloister again.
