Mushroom Rock Road
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
A long climb up a gorge to a command post on top of the cliffs. The road is crowded with soldiers, and nearly all of them have something to give you. Talk to everyone on the way up. They will not all be around afterwards.
The road in
A Crusader stops you at the junction and sends you left; you cannot go the other way yet. Before you follow him, talk to the soldiers standing around the first screen. Three of them hand you items, and two wander off and come back, so give them a moment.
O’aka is down the left path if you want to shop.
The valley
Save, then talk to the lone soldier past the Save Sphere. Up the first lift the road winds through the rock towers. There is a chest of gil in a niche with a soldier beside it, and the soldier has something for you too.
Further on, a chocobo knight trots ahead of you — follow her and you walk straight into a chest. Just before the next lift, look behind the rock pillar under the arch for another.
The flying enemies here dodge most attacks. Wakka hits them; so does lightning. The mushroom-shaped ones put you to sleep if you hit them physically — burn them with Fire instead.
The precipice
The soldier in front of you off the lift has a gift. Take the left fork after him and ride the small lift down for a piece of armour for Kimahri.
Back up, a thin trail runs off to the left and curls north. It is hard to see against the rock, but it ends at an Al Bhed Primer. A Crusader pacing the spiral path has some gil for you on the way back, and another stands by the last lift with a Mega-Potion.
The command post
At the top you meet familiar faces. Two chests sit beside Yuna and Lulu when you get control back — one is armour for Auron.
The guard to the south starts the operation. Before you talk to him, make sure you have spoken to every soldier on the road below. Save at the sphere beside O’aka.
The battle
The boss has a body, a head and two arms, and you only have to kill the body.
- The head casts lightning. When the message says it is “moving suspiciously”, hit it with anyone who can reach it — Wakka, Lulu or Kimahri’s Lancet — or it poisons someone hard.
- The arms block physical attacks and grow back. Auron’s and Kimahri’s weapons punch through them, and magic ignores them.
- Haste everyone, use Cheer and Focus early, and pour Fire into the body.
A second round follows straight away with a smaller party and a powerful ally. Let the ally’s spells do the work and finish the body.
The beach
You wake on a beach. Head to the soldier near the cliffs at the back to move things on, then look left of the Save Sphere for a Hi-Potion.
Buy Softs from O’aka before you leave. The next road has lizards that turn you to stone, and a party of statues is a game over. Ten is plenty.

Mushroom Rock Road is generous and unforgiving in the same breath. The chests all wait for you. The people do not. Every gift on this road comes from a Crusader or soldier taking part in Operation Mi’ihen, and once the operation starts they are gone for good.
The one deadline
Talking to the guard south of the command post starts Operation Mi’ihen. Before you do it, you should be holding all eight gifts from the road below:
- Ether, Hi-Potion and Phoenix Down x2 — the Crusaders on the first screen
- Hi-Potion — the soldier past the Save Sphere
- Potion x10 — the soldier guarding the gil chest
- X-Potion — the soldier off the lift onto the precipice
- 400 gil — the Crusader pacing the spiral path
- Mega-Potion — the Crusader by the last lift
None of it is rare. All of it is free, and it is the last batch of free healing before the road gets harder.
The road in and the valley
Clasko blocks the right-hand path at the junction; the road to Djose opens only after the battle. The three Crusaders on the first screen give the Ether, Hi-Potion and Phoenix Downs.
In the valley the chests are 1,000 gil (in a niche, with the Potion-giving soldier beside it), a Remedy where Lucil’s chocobo stops, and a Hi-Potion behind the pillar under the arch before the second lift.
Enemies worth knowing: Funguar counter physical hits with sleep-inducing Pollen and die to one Fire. Gandarewa dodge everything but Wakka and lightning. Lamashtu and Vouivre fall to Auron. Garuda are slow, tanky and worth fleeing from early on.
The precipice
Left fork past the X-Potion soldier, small lift down: Serene Armlet, Kimahri’s armour with Berserk protection.
Al Bhed Primer Vol. X is at the end of the hidden trail that runs left off the main path and curves north. It is the only Primer here.
The command post
Gatta catches you on the way in, sulking about guard duty. What you say to him decides who comes back. Talk to him a second time and tell him he belongs on the front line, and he joins the attack and dies; Luzzu lives. Say nothing and Gatta stays behind; Luzzu dies. Nothing you can collect depends on it — the survivor turns up at Djose Temple, and that is all.
Kinoc’s briefing gives you control by Yuna and Lulu. The two chests there are a Mega-Potion and the Serene Bracer, Auron’s armour with Berserk protection. Save at the sphere beside O’aka, then talk to the guard.
Boss: Sinspawn Gui
| Part | HP |
|---|---|
| Body | 12,000 |
| Head | 4,000 |
| Each arm | 800 |
The head casts Thunder and, after its “moving suspiciously” warning, Venom — physical damage plus Poison. One ranged hit on the head during the warning cancels it, so keep Wakka or Lulu ready. Once the head is down it stays down.
The arms do not attack. They are armoured, they deflect physical hits away from the body, and they regrow. Auron and Kimahri pierce them, and black magic ignores them entirely. The body alternates a punch for about 600 and Demi.
Haste Lulu first, then everyone else. Kill the head, drop the arms, and spend every free turn on the body with Fire. Focus and Cheer stack early. Get every character in at least once for the AP. Steal: Potion. The first fight drops nothing.
Boss: Sinspawn Gui, round two
Sin’s attack follows, then Gui again with only Yuna, Auron and Seymour. Body 6,000, head 1,000, arms 800. One of Seymour’s -ara spells finishes the head. Clear the arms, burn the body, and let Seymour land the final blow — his spells overkill it easily, and an Overkill doubles the Lv. 1 Key Spheres you win. Steal is a Potion again.
The aftermath
Tidus wakes on the beach. Talk to whichever of Gatta or Luzzu survived, near the cliffs at the back; the flashback that follows has Auron telling Tidus that Sin is Jecht.
The chest left of the Save Sphere holds a Hi-Potion. Shelinda heals you, and O’aka is on the northern path. Buy ten Softs — Basilisks on Djose Highroad petrify, and a fully petrified party is a game over.
Coming back later
Once you have beaten Spherimorph in Macalania Woods, Jecht Spheres start appearing around Spira. This road has one: an Auron sphere at the top of the ridge where you met Gatta and Luzzu. It counts toward Auron’s Overdrives and the Messenger from the Past achievement. Walk back for it from Djose, or drop in with the airship. See the Jecht Spheres guide.
