Thunder Plains
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
The plains are long, open and loud. The lightning itself never hurts you — it just knocks Tidus over — and the fiends out here are mostly lightning-based, which makes water your friend. Give Lulu her water spell and put on any lightning protection you bought in town.
Dodging
When the screen flashes white, press the confirm button and Tidus sidesteps the bolt. Standing near one of the tall lightning towers keeps you safe entirely. The game is counting how many you dodge in a row. Don’t chase it now — it is a job for much later, with better gear. Just get used to the timing.
The southern plains
Save at the first Save Sphere. Four chests on this half:
- Phoenix Down x2 — beside the first tower, next to the Save Sphere.
- Hi-Potion x2 — a little northwest of it.
- 5,000 gil — follow the west wall north. The chest is behind a glowing cactus-shaped stone, against the cliff, and you can walk right past it.
- Water Ball — in a small alcove off the east side, past the woman with the camera crew. Put it on Wakka. Most of what lives here is weak to water.
The glowing stones are a puzzle for much later. Leave them be.
The travel agency
Rikku will beg for a rest at the agency halfway across. Save, then talk to Rikku. Rin comes in and asks how your Al Bhed study is going. Answer “Okay” — he gives you an Al Bhed Primer. The book on the counter is a storybook, not a Primer.
Follow Yuna into the back to move on, and talk to Rikku in the morning. As you leave, someone drops a Yellow Shield on the ground outside — pick it up and put it on Tidus.
The northern plains
The northern half has four more chests: an X-Potion as you come in, an Ether on the left behind the big ruined structure, 2,000 gil on the right side further on, and a Remedy on the left near the far exit.
The big armored fiends up here are the first real wall in a while. Break their power and armor with Auron first and they go down cleanly. Halfway along, the party stops for a talk. Then save and walk north out of the storm.
Worth doing on a first run

Completionist mode. Full spoilers, in play order, with every permanent loss called out before you reach it.
Spoilers from here.
Two celestial weapon jobs open on this plain — Kimahri’s Spirit Lance behind the Qactuar stones and Lulu’s Venus Sigil at 200 dodges. Neither closes. Both are far easier later, and both live in the celestial weapons guide. What a first visit should do is take the chests, take the Primer, and move on.
The one thing that matters
Answer “Okay” when Rin asks about your Al Bhed. That is Primer Vol. XIV. Skip it and the agency copy is gone; a spare lies in the sand of the Sanubia Desert, so it is recoverable, but there is no reason to need it.
The southern plains
- Phoenix Down x2 — beside the first tower at the Save Sphere.
- Hi-Potion x2 — northwest of the Save Sphere.
- 5,000 gil — hard against the west cliff behind the first Qactuar stone.
- Water Ball — the east alcove past Shelinda, at the foot of a tower. Waterstrike for Wakka; most of the lightning fiends out here are weak to it.
Steal Lunar Curtains from Larvae if you see them; they feed Rikku’s Mix. Gold Elements carry Electro Marbles.
Lightning dodging, briefly
Press confirm on the flash. A hit costs nothing but the streak. The prize chest outside Rin’s pays out at 5 / 10 / 20 / 50 / 100 / 150 / 200 consecutive dodges: X-Potion x2, Mega-Potion x2, MP Sphere x2, Strength Sphere x3, HP Sphere x3, Megalixir x4 and the Venus Sigil (and the Lightning Dancer achievement) at 200. Getting hit, entering the agency or leaving the plains resets the count. The 200 run needs No Encounters armor and a trick for predictable bolts — leave it for the celestial weapons guide.
The Qactuar stones
The glowing cactus stones. Pray at one while it flashes and Qactuars join the random encounters — 1,000 Needles for a flat 1,000, near-perfect evasion, and they flee. Valefor’s Sonic Wings and Ifrit’s overdrive land on them; steal Chocobo Feathers. Wake three stones and a ghost Qactuar leads you to a broken tower on the south plain; pray there and a chest appears. It holds the Spirit Lance and stays locked until you have the Celestial Mirror. Nothing here is lost by leaving it.
Rin’s Travel Agency
Save, talk to Rikku (she explains her fear of lightning), and Rin arrives: “Okay” for Primer XIV. Follow Yuna into the back. In the morning Rikku gives up and the party goes on. Outside, a fleeing photographer drops a Yellow Shield for Tidus with Lightningproof: lightning cannot hurt him while he wears it, which is better than the Lightning Ward on the shop’s Yellow line.
The northern plains
- X-Potion — southeast corner as you come in.
- Ether — on the left behind the large structure.
- 2,000 gil — right side, east of the Ether.
- Remedy — left side near the exit, the one people miss.
Iron Giants roam here. Power Break and Armor Break first; overkill them for good AP. Halfway along, Yuna tells the party she has accepted Seymour’s proposal. Save at the northern Save Sphere and walk into Macalania Woods.
Come back after the woods
The Thunder Plains Jecht Sphere is not here yet. Jecht Spheres only appear once you have Jecht’s Sphere from the Macalania Woods boss. Then it sits on the ground beside a tower on the right side of the south plains, a little north of the Water Ball alcove. Walk back for it straight after the boss, or come with the airship. With Macalania’s two it gets Auron to three spheres and Banishing Blade.
