Chapter 3: Mi'ihen, Mushroom Rock, Moonflow and Guadosalam
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
Four stops, all optional, and all worth making. The Highroad is the only one with any pressure on it, and the last stop is the one you must not rush.
The Highroad race
Save before you go. The race starts the moment you arrive, and you want to arrive from the south end: either beam down from the airship or walk out of Luca. Do not come in from the Mushroom Rock end.
Thirteen pairs of broken machines are scattered along the road, marked green on your minimap. A rival team is after the same ones and takes one every 40 seconds you spend walking around. Battles and menus do not count, so fight everything you reach; just do not wander off the road. Destroy seven and the race is yours, along with a big pile of gil and a new garment grid.
Leave the chests for afterwards. There are fourteen of them strung along the road, and the one near the travel agency is the one people forget.
Near the north end, Shinra is setting something up. Stop and talk to him.
Mushroom Rock and the Moonflow
Both are short. At Mushroom Rock, talk to Shinra once (no need to chase him), then walk toward the headquarters for a brief scene. Look for a chest of gil while you are here.
At the Moonflow, find Tobli just east of the Save Sphere and talk to him.
The chateau in Guadosalam
Walk into the chateau. Talk to the two men in the living room, then go upstairs and talk to the lady of the house, then come back down and talk to the two men again. A hidden door opens at the back of the living room.
Down the passageway, past the Save Sphere, there is a round room on the left with a chest on the floor. Then climb the crate on the left of that room and follow the narrow walkway around the top. The chest at the end holds something you will need much later and cannot get any other way.
Go back to the Save Sphere and down the right side to the far room. You are handed two spheres there, and there is a third on the stand beside the bed.
Someone appears in that room while you are not looking. Talk to him, choose “Please, go on”, and let him finish. Do not skip a line. It takes a while.
Back on the airship, play the spheres you picked up, and talk to Shinra about the new one. Then take the hallway out of Guadosalam to the Thunder Plains.
Worth doing on a first run

Spoilers from here.
Nothing on this stretch is required by the story, and every Story Completion line on it closes when you beat Ixion at the end of the chapter. The two permanent items are Undying Storm (win Machina Mayhem) and Crimson Sphere 4 (Chateau Leblanc). Without Crimson Sphere 4 the Den of Woe stays sealed in Chapter 5, and there is no second copy.
Mi’ihen Highroad: “Machina Mayhem!”
Save first, and enter from the Celsius or from Luca. Entering from the Mushroom Rock end is the one thing to avoid; it skews the Chapter 5 Highroad Mystery. Ignoring the machina altogether also changes that mystery and costs the 0.6% here.
The rules: 13 machina pairs, green on the minimap, laid out south to north roughly 3, 1, 3, none at the agency, 3, 3. The Al Bhed team strips one pair every 40 seconds that you are on the field map; fights and menus pause them. Seven kills wins outright. A Charm Bangle (No Encounters) keeps random fights from eating your time. Most of the machina absorb lightning and have nothing worth stealing, so just hit them.
The out-of-the-way pair sits on the centre rock north of Rin’s agency. On the right side of the map you can hold the action button at a cliff edge to drop onto another pair; that also plays a short Rikku scene that trims a step off the Chapter 4 CommSphere viewing. Optional.
Win for 10,000 gil and Undying Storm, which exists only in this chapter.
Before leaving, find Shinra southeast of the Mushroom Rock exit and talk to him about the CommSphere. The agency restocks Hi-Potions and four accessories.
The fourteen chests
From the Luca end: Phoenix Down x4, 2,000 gil and a Hypno Crown in the first stretch; a lone Hi-Potion x2 in the second; Holy Water x4, Hi-Potion x4 and Hi-Potion x2 in the third; Eye Drops x3 by the travel agency (left off one popular list); Soft x4 before the bridge past the agency; Phoenix Down x4 after the first curve; S-Bomb x2 just before the Mushroom Rock exit; then on the old road, Ether x2, Echo Screen x4 by the Save Sphere and Hi-Potion x2 on the little side road.
Mushroom Rock Road
Shinra bolts to set up his CommSphere as you land; talk to him once and leave him to it. Walk toward Youth League HQ for Yaibal and Lucil (0.4%, Youth League route only).
There is a 2,000 gil chest on the road this chapter that walkthroughs skip. One places it up the lift in the north; its final-chapter counterpart sits in the alcove beside the Save Sphere on the ravine path. Check both.
The Moonflow
Warp in and talk to Tobli east of the Save Sphere (0.2%). Shinra drops the CommSphere by the wagon. Do your campaign talks while here.
Chateau Leblanc
Shinra runs past with the Guadosalam CommSphere as you arrive. Inside:
- Logos and Ormi in the living room.
- Leblanc in her bedroom upstairs. She is moping over Nooj.
- Logos and Ormi again. Agree to meet them in Logos’s room, and the hidden passage behind the living room opens.
Past the Save Sphere, take the left door into the round room where you fought the Syndicate last chapter. Tetra Band is in the chest on the floor. Climb the crate on the left, follow the high outer walkway round, and the chest at the end is Crimson Sphere 4.
Back past the Save Sphere, Logos’s room is down the right side of the passage, at the far east end. Logos plays you some of his collection and hands over Logos’s Sphere and Ormi’s Sphere. The Gaol Sphere is on the nightstand beside the bed.
Then Maechen turns up behind you. Talk to him, pick “Please, go on”, and let him run to the end without skipping. That is worth 0.2% and is the easiest moment in the game for the Good Listener achievement.
One more thing in this passage, but not yet: the Cactuar gatekeeper Lobeira hides in a chest in one of these rooms. It only appears once the Cactuar Nation has given you the job, later this chapter. You will be back.
Back on the Celsius
Watch the three new spheres, then talk to Shinra to play Crimson Record 4 (“This is the final exercise”). The whole Guadosalam set, spheres and record included, is worth about 2% of Story Completion. Then head out through the lower hallway of Guadosalam to the Thunder Plains.
