Chapter 1: Mi'ihen, Mushroom Rock and Djose
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
Three hotspots in a row, and none of them is a hard fight. What they have instead is people. This is where talking to everyone starts to matter.
Mi’ihen Highroad
You can land here from the airship or walk up the steps from Luca. Either way, Yuna has a moment on arrival, and then the road is yours.
There is no mission on the Highroad this time. There are fourteen chests, though, mostly on side paths off the left and right of the main road. Walk the whole thing from south to north and look down every branch. Two are worth equipping straight away: a Circlet for whoever is casting, and an Iron Bangle for whoever is taking hits.
Rin’s Travel Agency sits halfway along and works as a shop.
Mushroom Rock Road
At the top of the road a man from the group camped here stops you and asks for help. Say yes the first time. Then talk to the nervous man standing next to him before you set off.
The job is to get through the gorge to the lift at the far end. Fog comes and goes and the fights get thicker while it is down. Before you head down, take the left fork: there is a glyph lift up to a statue with gil behind it.
In the gorge you will meet Tonberries. Run from them. They have an enormous amount of HP and give you almost nothing for the trouble.
Three chests sit on the way down the gorge. Past the Save Sphere at the north end, there is a tunnel nothing tells you to enter. Go in anyway, walk up to the door, look at it, and talk to the man behind you. You leave with something you will want much later.
The mission ends at the lift with an accessory and a garment grid. Before you ride up, swing the camera round in that last area: there is a chest tucked in the southwest corner.
The headquarters
At the top, walk right from the Save Sphere to the cliff edge and drop down the small ledge. There is a garment grid down there that is easy to miss.
Then the people. Talk to the woman in front of the big tent twice. Then find the old man sitting to the right of the entrance. Answer “By all means” and let him talk. Do not cut him off, however long it takes. When he offers his hand, shake it.
Go back to the airship for a moment, talk to Shinra and Buddy, and come back down. The nervous man is waiting by the Save Sphere and wants a ride. Say “The more the merrier!” and look for him by the window at the back of the cabin afterwards.
Djose Temple
There is a queue at the counter. Grab the chest in the nook west of the stall while you wait, or talk to the people in line to move it along. When it has cleared, tell the man at the counter “I want to dig!”
Inside, watch the scene and pick up the chest in the far north room. Outside, one screen south, you are asked if you are sure about digging. Say “We’re sure.” The letter you get is a key item you need soon. The last chest is further down the bridge.
Next stop: the Moonflow.
Worth doing on a first run

Completionist mode. Full spoilers, in play order, with every permanent loss called out before you reach it. 1 entries below are marked where our sources disagree with each other — we have not picked a winner for you.
Spoilers from here.
Two rules govern every X-2 checklist, and this is the first page where both bite.
Chests are not chapter-locked. An unopened chest stays put into later chapters until the game restocks that spot with something new. The catch is that every Highroad chest is restocked in Chapter 2, so open them now; what is in them today may not be what you find next time.
Story Completion scenes are. Every line below marked as a scene is gone when Chapter 1 ends, and two of them go the instant you pick the wrong answer. Mushroom Rock alone is worth 4.6%, the biggest single block in the chapter outside the main missions.
What closes, and when
- Yaibal’s request. “Not right now” loses the scene on the spot. Accepting later does not bring it back.
- Maechen. Cut him off and the 1.4% for the full story is gone. Refuse the handshake and the closing line goes with it.
- End of Chapter 1 (beating YSLS-Zero at Kilika): every other scene here, Crimson Sphere 9 and the Restless Sleep garment grid. Crimson Sphere 9 has no second copy, and without all ten spheres the Den of Woe stays shut in Chapter 5.
- The Clasko invite closes with the chapter as a scene, but the Alchemist dressphere and the Chocobo Ranch survive it. You lose those for good only if you never talk to Clasko in Chapters 1 or 2. Invite him now anyway.
Mi’ihen Highroad
Yuna’s arrival narration is 0.2% and plays by itself. That is the only Story Completion on the road this chapter. There is no mission and no boss.
Fourteen chests, all on side paths. From the Luca end:
- Phoenix Down x2, side path northeast of the Save Sphere.
- 500 gil, in the ruins at the circular loop.
- Circlet, east side path before the screen change. Magic and Magic Defense +10.
- Antidote x2, on the straight past the machina.
- Holy Water x2, first side area on the left of the next screen. One guide prints three; the chest holds two.
- Potion x2 on the east side and Iron Bangle (Max HP +20%) opposite it on the west, guarded by a lone machina.
- Eye Drops x2, west of Rin’s Travel Agency. One widely used chest list leaves this one out entirely.
- Potion, between the two bridges.
- Phoenix Down x2, northwest curve around the raised platform.
- Budget Grenade x2, east of the north junction by the red cages.
- Mana Spring, on the Oldroad.
- Echo Screen x2 and Soft x2, the last section and the narrow Oldroad path.
The agency shop sells Iron Bangles, Silver Bracers, Gauntlets and a Tiara if you want doubles.
If you have already signed up with a company in the Calm Lands, the travellers here are worth campaign points. This walkthrough signs up later in the chapter; the points are not needed from this visit.
Mushroom Rock Road: Foggy Fiend Frenzy!
Past the Save Sphere, Yaibal (“????”) asks if you remember him. Either answer works. Accept his request — Rikku’s “Let’s hunt some fiend!” is 0.2%. Then talk to Clasko, standing beside him. His sigh is another 0.2% and it is the easiest line in the area to walk past.
Before following the road down, go left: a glyph lift on the north side path leads up to Lord Mi’ihen’s statue, and 1,000 gil is behind it on the east wall.
The mission is a walk to the lift at the far end of the gorge, with fog that raises the encounter rate while it is down. The Tonberries have 9,999 HP and give poor EXP and items. Escape.
The Ravine. Turbo Ether off to the west on the steps down, Phoenix Down on the east wall where the camera turns, Hi-Potion further along the narrow passage. Bully Caps here use White Wind, which a Gun Mage can learn later; nothing is lost by not having one yet.
The Den of Woe entrance. The tunnel just north of the Ravine Save Sphere. Ormi and Logos come running out (“This one ain’t no good?”, 0.2%) and drop Crimson Sphere 9. Examine the door, talk to Maroda behind you and answer “Of course I do!” for “Remember me?” (0.2%). He tells you the door wants Crimson Spheres and sends you off. Owning the sphere also unlocks Crimson Record 9 on the Celsius.
The lift. Elma ends the mission at the lift with a Glass Buckle and the Heart of Flame garment grid. Before riding up, the Favorite Outfit is in a chest in the southwest corner of that area, behind the camera.
Youth League Headquarters
You cannot go inside yet.
- Restless Sleep. Walk right from the Save Sphere to the cliff edge and drop off the small ledge on the east side. Chapter 1 only — later chapters do not stock it.
- Lucil, in front of the tent, twice: “It’s been too long, Lady Yuna” and Rikku’s line about the weirdos. 0.2% each.
- Maechen, sitting right of the entrance. His greeting is 0.2%. Answer “By all means”, then let the whole story play. If a menu offering “Please, go on” or “Enough, enough!” comes up, either one cuts it short and the 1.4% is gone. When he offers his hand, “Of course” — “Now this old scholar can go in peace”, 0.2%. He comes back later in the game with another story that wants the same patience.
The Celsius and Clasko
Talk to Shinra on the bridge and pick “Treasure Spheres” for Crimson Record 9 (0.2%). One guide says it still counts if watched in a later chapter; do not rely on that. Talk to Buddy too.
Drop back to Mushroom Rock Road. Clasko is by the Save Sphere on the right and asks to ride the airship. “The more the merrier!” (0.2%). On board, he is up the stairs at the back of the cabin by the window — “Why won’t the room stop shaking?” (0.2%).
With the mission’s own scenes (1.0%), Mushroom Rock comes to 4.6%.
Djose Temple
The stall queue is just timing. Talk to the people in it to move it along, and open the Phoenix Down in the nook west of the stall meanwhile. Then tell the man in the turquoise bandana “I want to dig!”
- Al Bhed Primer from Gippal after the first temple scene.
- Echo Screen in the northernmost room.
- Letter of Introduction from Gippal outside, one screen south: say “We’re sure.” Bikanel’s excavation will not take you without it.
- Potion x2 further down the bridge, west of the wall.
The temple scenes are 1.0% and come with the visit.
Running total if everything is done: about 17% leaving Djose.
