The Chocobo Training Guide for Final Fantasy X

Updated 2026-10-10

Full spoilers.

The woman riding a chocobo on the Calm Lands runs four courses. The first is a two-minute formality that lets you ride chocobos on the plains. The last, Catcher Chocobo, is one of the most frustrating mini-games in the series, and finishing it well enough wins the Sun Sigil for Tidus’s celestial weapon, Caladbolg.

Finding her

She rides around the north-western part of the Calm Lands, near the travel agency. Where exactly depends on which way you came in; if you fly in on the airship she is usually close to the agency. Talk to her and say yes each time she asks whether you are sure.

She is there from your first visit to the Calm Lands. There is no reason to go past the first course on a story pass.

The four courses at a glance

Each course opens when you clear the one before it. Each pays a prize the first time you clear it, and a smaller one whenever you match or beat your own best time afterwards.

Course What you do First clear Beat your record
Wobbly Chocobo Keep a drifting bird on course to the trainer Elixir X-Potion
Dodger Chocobo Dodge blitzballs Lv. 1 Key Sphere Mega-Potion
Hyper Dodger Chocobo Dodge blitzballs and birds Lv. 2 Key Sphere Ether
Catcher Chocobo Race the trainer: grab balloons, dodge birds Lv. 3 Key Sphere Turbo Ether

There is no separate “chocobo race” in the trainer’s menu: Catcher Chocobo is the race against her. The chocobo race you may have heard about with chests and a mirror is a different event at Remiem Temple — see the Remiem Temple guide.

Use the d-pad, not the stick. Every course is about small, fast corrections, and the stick turns too much.

Wobbly Chocobo

The bird runs on its own and keeps veering off. Tap left or right to bring it back, and tap, don’t hold — it over-corrects. Aim at the bird the trainer is standing beside rather than at her; it tends to drift right near the end. The target is about 12.8 seconds.

Clearing this is all you need to ride chocobos on the plains, which is how you reach Remiem Temple.

Dodger Chocobo

Blitzballs come at you in clusters. Keep moving in one direction while they are bunched together and only switch sides when there is a large gap. Clusters often come in threes: dodge three one way, then cross.

Each hit stops you briefly. A hit or two is fine if you were ahead; the balls come faster near the finish, so save your caution for the last stretch.

Hyper Dodger Chocobo

Same idea, more mess: balls split in flight and birds join in. Two ways to handle it:

  • Hold the centre — the split balls rarely land there — and only leave it when a bird pushes you out.
  • Wide S-curves across the whole track, sweeping away from whatever is coming.

Expect to take at least one hit. You have more time on this course than on the last.

Catcher Chocobo

You race the trainer to the finish. Along the way:

  • every balloon you collect takes 3 seconds off your final time;
  • every bird that hits you adds about 3 seconds and stuns you for a moment.

Beat the trainer to the line and you clear the course. She grabs balloons too, and she is quick to the early ones.

Dodging comes first, balloons second. A balloon you collect by flying into a bird is worth nothing. Balloon positions are random each run, so there is no route to memorise, but the birds follow a pattern:

  • Ignore the balloon on the left at the start — she always gets it.
  • Take the right side of the opening hill, where balloons sit in reach.
  • Turn tight at the bottom of the hill; a balloon is often waiting.
  • Birds start after that turn, mostly from the left. Hug the right without touching the invisible wall — touching it slows you badly.
  • The second set spawns from the jutting shadow further on. Steer clear.
  • The final stretch narrows and birds come in just right of a small dip. Be patient here.
  • Approach balloons at an angle, not head-on, so incoming birds pass you.

The Sun Sigil

To win the Sun Sigil your final time has to be below zero. The timer never shows a negative number, so a run that shows 0.0 might be exactly zero — which only pays the Turbo Ether — or just under it, which pays the Sigil.

The maths: a clean run takes somewhere in the high thirties of seconds, so you need thirteen or fourteen balloons and no bird hits, or more balloons to cover each hit. If you have not picked up three or four balloons by the bottom of the first hill, the run is gone; let it finish and go again.

Getting below zero for the first time also unlocks Chocobo Rider. Clearing all four courses unlocks Chocobo License.

It is a matter of attempts. Warm up on Hyper Dodger if you have been away for a while, and take breaks — tired hands lose this race.

Caladbolg

Once you have beaten the trainer at Catcher Chocobo — any winning time, it does not have to be below zero — the man blocking a narrow path at the northern end of the Calm Lands steps aside. Walk down it with the Celestial Mirror and use it where the mirror reacts to take Caladbolg, Tidus’s celestial weapon.

If he is back in the way on a later visit, finish any course once and he moves again.

The Sun Crest comes from Zanarkand Dome and the Sun Sigil from the race above. The celestial weapons guide covers the full set.

Chocobo Feather markers

Riding a chocobo also lets you use the feather markers on the Calm Lands: press confirm beside one and the bird flies you up or down a cliff. The one on the south-eastern side takes you to the hidden path to Remiem Temple.
