Chapter 2: Moonflow, Guadosalam, Thunder Plains and Macalania
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
Chapter 2 hands you the whole map and a list of hotspots. This stretch of it runs north from the river to the woods, and every stop has a small job. None of them are long. Do them all on this pass, because the game does not hold them open for you.
The Moonflow: sell the tickets
There is nothing to open on the riverbank this time. Find Tobli on the south bank and agree to help him. He gives you ten concert tickets to sell to people along both banks and the road up to Guadosalam.
You get one pitch per person, and anyone who thinks you are asking too much walks off. Save at the Save Sphere before you start, and reload if a sale goes wrong. Six sales finish the job, but sell all ten. The people who pay best are the ones standing around the docks and on the road ends; the man on the bench and the sleepy guard are bad customers.
Go back to Tobli when you are done. He pays you in gil and a garment grid, plus an accessory if his job last chapter went well.
Guadosalam
Walk up to the big house at the top of town and let the guards turn you away. That short scene is worth having now.
The man behind the inn counter will sell you “data” for 10,000 gil if you ask. Someone in town will buy it back for a lot more. Who changes each time, so save first and reload if you get a poor price. It is easy money.
Thunder Plains: tune the towers
Talk to the Al Bhed standing by the first tower and offer to help. Each of the ten towers is a short button game: Rikku’s show you what to press, Paine’s drop buttons you hit as they land, and Yuna’s make you repeat a pattern from memory. The last one wants it backwards.
Save before each tower and aim for a perfect run every time. It is worth the reloads. When all ten are done, the technician inside the Travel Agency has a garment grid for you.
There are six chests out here, three in each half of the plains, all in plain sight near the towers. If you see Cid sitting by himself, talk to him.
Macalania Woods: find the band
A Hypello at the entrance is waving for help. Say yes. The band’s leader is at the spring, and the other two are hidden inside rings of blue butterflies along the shimmering path. Walk into the rings.
Look for three more butterfly rings near the spring before you finish — they hide tiny extra band members, and the full set pays off later. When the band is back together, the leader gives you an accessory, and the Hypello at the entrance has a garment grid if you go back and talk to him.
Two chests sit along the shimmering path north of the entrance, and a third is by the Travel Agency down at the lake. If the game asks whether you want to leave the woods while you are still busy, say no.
Worth doing on a first run
How this page was made
Researched across 8 community walkthroughs and written from scratch — no source’s wording appears here.
Completionist mode. Full spoilers, in play order, with every permanent loss called out before you reach it. 5 entries below are marked where our sources disagree with each other — we have not picked a winner for you.
Spoilers from here.
Everything on this page is Chapter 2 only. The chapter ends at Bevelle with Bahamut, and when it does, these close for good:
- YRP’s ticket sales. All ten sold is what unlocks the Moonflow episode in Chapter 5.
- The tower calibrations. Each tower’s score sets what its Chapter 5 chest holds, and a perfect 30 on Tower 10 is the Ribbon.
- O’aka’s debt. Clear it now; a Chapter 5 Macalania scene depends on it.
- Track Down the Troupe, its two rewards and the three hidden musicians.
- Full Throttle from Tromell, if you missed it in Chapter 1.
- The Story Completion scenes listed below.
Chests are different. An unopened chest carries forward until a later chapter replaces it, so a missed Ether is not a crisis. Still, take them now.
The Moonflow: YRP, the Scalpers Three!
No chests on the river this chapter. Tobli is on the south bank; talking to him and agreeing to help is the Story Completion line.
Your cost per ticket depends on Chapter 1: 500 gil if you spoke to Tobli before his Hypello in “Shave the Hypello?”, 1,000 if you did not. You get one pitch per buyer. Ask more than they will pay and they walk, so save first.
The best ten buyers, roughly south to north:
- Al Bhed woman in pink at the Djose end of the south road — 1,500
- Woman in the red headband before Tobli — 1,500
- Woman in yellow and orange across from the Save Sphere — 1,500
- Person sitting on the southern dock steps — 1,500
- Man in green in the southwest corner of the southern dock — 2,000
- Child beside the Hypello on the northern dock — 2,000
- Woman (yellow dress) at the top of the northern dock ramp — 2,000
- Woman in green across from the bench on the north wharf — 2,000
- Man in blue and yellow on the left of the road to Guadosalam — 1,500
- Woman standing beside a child, north of Tobli — 1,000
That is about 11,500 gil profit at the 500-gil cost. Avoid the man in yellow and brown on the south road (200), the man on the Save Sphere bench (1,000) and the sleeping guard on the north wharf (500). The man talking to an older woman by the Guadosalam entrance is the one buyer the guides cannot agree on — one prices him at 2,000, another at 500. Save, try him at 2,000 before the woman with the child, and reload if he walks; if he pays, profit is about 12,500.
Sell all ten. Six closes the mission; only ten unlocks the Chapter 5 episode. Selling at a loss does not matter.
Tobli’s prizes:
- Seething Cauldron for six or more sales — with fewer than ten only if you made a profit, with ten either way.
- Muscle Belt as well for ten sales, if you finished “Shave the Hypello?”.
- Gun Mage in place of the Muscle Belt if you never finished his Chapter 1 job. That is the catch-up copy.
Guadosalam
Walk to the mansion at the top of town. The guards turn you away: that scene is a Story Completion line, and you will not get another first visit.
The data broker is the best gil in Chapter 2. Ask the man behind the inn counter “Got any data?” and pay 10,000 gil. One person in town will buy it for 25,000–100,000, and who that is is random each time; every wrong person you pitch to knocks the price down. Save before you ask him, try his hints, and reload until you land the 100,000 buyer. Put the profit straight into O’aka.
O’aka’s debt (the Celsius)
If you hid O’aka on the Celsius in Chapter 1, he is in the cabin with a 100,000 gil debt, and every gil you spend at his counter pays it down. The quick route is to buy 99 Phoenix Downs, sell them to the Barkeep and repeat; you lose roughly three quarters each round, so the data broker’s money is what makes this painless.
Clear it in Chapter 2. One source says Chapter 3 still works; the rest say it must be done before the chapter ends, and nothing is lost by doing it now. Once it is paid, his prices fall to about a tenth for the rest of the game.
Thunder Plains
Cid
If Cid sulks here, he is east of the Save Sphere in the south section. Talk to him; it is a Story Completion line. Most sources tie this to answering “You bet I do!” at Zanarkand in Chapter 1 — if you said otherwise he turns up in Chapter 3 to apologise instead, and that counts in its place. One guide has the answers the other way round.
The towers
Talk to the Al Bhed by the first tower and offer to help. Each tower is 30 button presses with three mistakes allowed:
- Rikku (Towers 1, 4, 7): press the button shown.
- Paine (Towers 2, 5, 8): hit the buttons as they fall.
- Yuna (Towers 3, 6, 9, 10): repeat the sequence from memory. Tower 10 wants it in reverse.
The south five are easier than the north five. Save before every tower and reload anything short of 30. In Chapter 5 you fight a fiend at each tower and it leaves a chest whose contents follow your score here, in brackets of 0–5, 6–14, 15–24, 25–29 and 30. Tower 10 at 30 is the Ribbon; anything less is a Tetra accessory. Your best run at each tower is what counts. Accounts differ on whether the towers stay open into Chapter 3 for another try or close when this chapter ends — get your 30s now and the question never matters.
When you are done, the technician in the Travel Agency gives you Samurai’s Honor. Guides disagree on the condition — every tower once, five finished plus all ten attempted, or five perfects — and ten perfects meets all of them.
Chests, three per half:
- South: Echo Screen x4 behind the first Cactuar stone, Potion x3 northwest of Tower 3, Pearl Necklace by the exit to the Travel Agency.
- North: Silence Grenade x2 west of Tower 6, Ether x2 on the east edge between Towers 7 and 8, Phoenix Down x2 southeast of Tower 9.
Macalania Woods: Track Down the Troupe!
Talk to the waving Hypello at the Thunder Plains entrance and agree. Bayra is at the spring at the top of the woods.
Before chasing the two missing musicians, find the three hidden mini musicians: butterfly rings at the upper left and lower left of Bayra’s spring, and a third up the branch path off the lower left. One guide says finding all three unlocks a garment grid in Chapter 3. Do them first, because finding the second required musician warps you back to Bayra.
Then the required two:
- Donga — the butterfly ring at the split on the shimmering path.
- Pukutak — follow the shimmering path toward the Thunder Plains end, go right past the Guado on the path to Bevelle, and take the lower path at the crossroads.
Bayra pays out the Haste Bangle. Then walk back to the Hypello at the entrance for Bitter Farewell — it is the half of this people forget. If the game asks whether you want to leave Macalania, say no until you are finished.
Chests: Silver Bracer at the left dead end of the shimmering path’s second split, Icy Gleam near the top curve of the figure-eight tree path, and Hi-Potion x2 in front of the Travel Agency at the lake.
Tromell and Full Throttle
If you missed Full Throttle in Chapter 1, talk to Tromell by the spring four times and he still hands it over. Two guides agree on this catch-up; one treats Chapter 1 as the only chance, so do not leave it past Chapter 2. His Chapter 1 Story Completion lines do not come back.
If O’aka went to the Al Bhed
If you handed O’aka over in Chapter 1, the lakeside agency is an Al Bhed shop now, and its Icy Gleam and White Ring stock is worth a look. The Al Bhed woman outside it gives an Al Bhed Primer if you did not collect it in Chapter 1.
