Chapter 5: Luca and the Mi'ihen Highroad

Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.

8 things here are lost permanently. Everything below is worth taking as you pass it. The completionist tab lists every one of them with the exact moment it stops being obtainable.

Luca

The new sports season is starting, and you will be offered a game the moment you land. Blitzball works differently from the last game: you manage the team and watch. Play one now if you are curious, or come back to the office in the town square later. It has no effect on the story.

The one new chest in town is in the outskirts.

Then take the stairs from the outskirts toward the Highroad, up to the balcony over the sea. When the moogle shows up, follow it. Square, bridge, stadium, docks. Walk up to it and press the button whenever it stops. If the girls suggest heading back to the ship instead, don’t. Finishing the chase is how Luca’s story ends properly.

The Mi’ihen Highroad

Someone is waiting for you outside the Travel Agency with the answer to the mystery you have been watching unfold all game. You don’t have to do anything except listen. The answer was decided by what you saw and did here in earlier chapters.

Afterwards, walk the road from south to north. There are chests on the Oldroad and the Newroad, including two accessories.

Chocobos are back on the road. Ride one to the north end of the Newroad, near the turn-off to Mushroom Rock, and find a feather on the ground. Stand by it and say “Am I ever!”. Your bird jumps up to a chest. Then leave the screen, come back and jump again from the same spot: the second jump finds a key item that powers up one of Paine’s dresspheres.
