The Chocobo Ranch in Final Fantasy X-2
Updated 2026-10-10
Full spoilers.
The ranch is a five-chapter chain. Most of it is optional, but three steps have hard deadlines, and missing the first one closes the whole thing for the rest of the file. Do those three on time and everything else can wait for Chapter 5, when chocobos are easier to raise and the payoffs open.
The deadlines
| Step | Deadline | What you lose if you miss it |
|---|---|---|
| Talk to Clasko and bring him aboard | End of Chapter 2 (Chapter 1 is the clean way) | The ranch, the Alchemist dressphere, and everything below |
| Clean Sweep at the old arena | End of Chapter 3 | Same: no ranch, no Alchemist |
| Catch one wild chocobo | End of Chapter 3 | Tricky Trapper, a Chapter 2 ranch line and the Chapter 4 ranch CommSphere scene, so 100% |
Chapter 1: Clasko on Mushroom Rock Road
During “Foggy Fiend Frenzy!” the nervous man in green standing beside Yaibal is Clasko. Talk to him there (his sigh is a Story Completion line), then again when he waits near the Save Sphere after the mission and asks for a ride. Answer “The more the merrier!”. He then sits up the stairs at the back of the Celsius cabin, feeling sick; talk to him there too.
If you miss him in Chapter 1, he turns up again in Chapter 2 on the Mushroom Rock Road path toward the Ravine. Talk to him then and he moves to the Calm Lands for Chapter 3. Miss him in both chapters and he is gone for good.
Chapter 2: Calli, then Clean Sweep
Cuckoo for Chocobos! on the Mi’ihen Highroad comes first. Finish it properly (the Mi’ihen area page covers the rodeo and Calli’s timer), then fly back and find Calli at the north exit with the chocobo. Clasko is with her if you brought him aboard. Invite both.
In the Calm Lands Clasko arrives with a short scene and runs east to the old Monster Arena. Follow him and agree to help: that is Clean Sweep.
- Each crevice holds a group of fiends. All but one are illusions, and the illusions all face the real one. Touch the fiend they point at.
- The first live one is a Skink in the second-to-last crevice in the northeast corner. Five more crevices are up the path on the ruins’ upper level.
- Guess wrong three times and red arrows show you the right one.
- After the fifth fiend, three Blue Elementals wait. Bring lightning.
Rewards: the ranch itself, the Alchemist dressphere, the Highroad Winds grid, and Clasko’s first Gysahl Greens and Pahsana Greens.
If you skip Clean Sweep in Chapter 2, Clasko offers it again in Chapter 3. That is the last window.
Catching a chocobo
Wild chocobos turn up as ordinary encounters in many areas: Besaid, Kilika Woods, the Thunder Plains, Bikanel and the Calm Lands among them.
- Gysahl Greens are the only thing that captures one, and only when the chocobo is the last thing left in the fight. Used while other fiends are still standing, a Gysahl acts like a Pahsana.
- Pahsana Greens keep the bird busy so it does not run.
- Feed it a Pahsana, kill everything else without hitting the chocobo, then feed it a Gysahl. Hit it and it flees.
Clasko restocks greens as you fight. Talk to him to collect. His stock caps at 99 of each; extra goes into his stash.
| Chapter | Gysahl Greens | Nutritive greens (Pahsana, Mimett, Sylkis) |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 5 every 12 battles | 10 every 6 battles |
| 3 | 5 every 10 battles | 10 every 6 battles |
| 4 | 5 every 6 battles | 10 every 5 battles |
| 5 | 5 every 6 battles | 10 every 5 battles |
Catch at least one before Chapter 3 ends. It earns Tricky Trapper, and the ranch’s Chapter 4 CommSphere only shows Clasko talking to a chocobo (a Story Completion line) if you own one. Without a bird he talks to himself and the line never fires.
While you are at the ranch in Chapter 3, follow Shinra up to the second floor and watch him place the ranch CommSphere. In Chapter 4, view it several times until Clasko is fussing over a chocobo.
Raising chocobos
Every chocobo has three things that matter: its level, its maximum level (1 to 5) and its nature (Bold, Timid or Normal).
The maximum level is hidden until Chapter 5, when it appears on the bird’s card in the ranch stalls. Feeding a chocobo before then risks pouring greens into a bird that caps at 2. Catch now, raise later.
| Level up | Greens |
|---|---|
| 1 → 2 | 10 Pahsana |
| 2 → 3 | 10 Mimett |
| 3 → 4 | 30 Mimett |
| 4 → 5 | 40 Sylkis |
Release birds whose cap is too low for what you want from them.
Dispatching chocobos
From Chapter 2 you can send chocobos out to hunt for treasure. A dispatched bird comes back after you fight a set number of battles elsewhere (seven), carrying up to four items, or nothing. Sometimes it does not come back at all: a runaway is gone, and counts for nothing.
Heart is the dispatch currency. Every chocobo starts at 100. A trip costs:
| Fit | Heart cost |
|---|---|
| Well suited | 15 |
| Average | 30 |
| Unsuited | 60 |
Each Pahsana Green restores 10 Heart; Clasko’s feed menu also has a full-restore option. Top up before every trip. Heart is one of the things that sets how good the haul is.
| Nature | Well suited | Unsuited |
|---|---|---|
| Bold | Djose Highroad, Calm Lands | Besaid, Moonflow, Macalania |
| Timid | Kilika, Thunder Plains, Bikanel | Djose Highroad, Calm Lands |
| Normal | Besaid, Moonflow, Macalania | Kilika, Thunder Plains, Bikanel |
Mi’ihen Highroad, Mushroom Rock Road, Mt. Gagazet and the Zanarkand Ruins are average for every nature.
What comes back is graded from Class 1 (best) to Class 4. Heart, the number of chocobos waiting at the ranch, and how well the bird suits the area all feed the grade, and higher levels pull better items. Each area has its own flavour: healing items around Besaid, bombs and grenades from Kilika, wind and ice items from Gagazet, Echo Screens and Remedies from Zanarkand, with accessories at the top of most lists. None of it is required.
Two garment grids also come from dispatches: Mounted Assault and Strength of One. They show up as chance finds, most often when a bird with less than full Heart comes back with nothing else.
Chapter 5: the three dispatches that open new places
Bikanel: the Central Expanse
Send any chocobo to Bikanel. It never comes back, so send one you can spare. In exchange the excavation crew can fly you to the Central Expanse, a dig site you cross on chocobo with no random fights. Do it before your Chapter 5 digging; it holds the Desert Key, and it is the fastest place to farm Special Assemblies. The Bikanel excavation guide covers the digging.
Mi’ihen: the Fiend Colony
Send a level 4 or 5 chocobo to the Mi’ihen Highroad and get it back. Clasko reports a new dungeon. The entrance is a portal by the crashed hover near the Save Sphere on the Highroad; answer “Yup-yup!” to go in. You can ride a chocobo there.
The colony is a maze of walls marked “blast through”. Bombs open them:
| Bomb | Strength |
|---|---|
| S-Bomb | 1 |
| M-Bomb | 2 |
| L-Bomb | 3 |
| Wall | Toughness |
|---|---|
| Green | 5 |
| Yellow | 10 |
| Red | 25 |
Bring a stack of bombs. The bugs inside (Creeper, Hug Bug, Hexapod) carry S-, M- and L-Bombs respectively; steal or bribe for more if you run short.
Chests:
| Contents |
|---|
| S-Bomb |
| M-Bomb |
| L-Bomb |
| Arcane Tome |
| Sword Tome |
| White Tome |
| Black Tome |
| Turbo Ether |
| Elixir |
| Elixir |
| Elixir |
| Mega Phoenix |
| Mega Phoenix |
The four Tomes are the reason to come; the rest is consumables. Open the bomb chests first and save your stock for the walls.
King VERMIN! waits at the end of the last corridor and ambushes you.
- 39,857 HP. Swipe (physical, causes Sleep), Fira and Firaga. If it oversouls (41,850 HP) it adds Holy, Flare, Demi and a triple hit.
- Sleepproof and fire protection: Twist Headband, Ribbon, Restless Sleep, Crimson Ring or Sublimator.
- Reflect the party. It leans on magic. Heal through Reflect with White Mage’s Pray or the Alchemist’s Mega-Potion.
- Steal Turbo Ether. It drops Power Gloves (Champion Belt if oversouled).
The win gives the Font of Power grid and drops you back outside. King VERMIN! is a Shinra’s Bestiary entry needed for Monster Master; if you skip it here, it also appears in the Via Infinito.
The Calm Lands: the Ruin Depths
The long one. Dispatch chocobos to the Calm Lands, again and again, at every level from 1 to 5, and end with four level 5 chocobos in the runner slots. Then Clasko finds a door at the back of the ranch.
The exact count is described differently from guide to guide, so do the version that satisfies all of them:
- Catch Bold chocobos. Bold birds are well suited to the Calm Lands, so a trip costs only 15 Heart. Kilika, the Thunder Plains and Bikanel turn them up often. Catch a dozen or more, then release any whose cap is below 5.
- Send them to the Calm Lands at level 1. Fight seven battles, save, then talk to Clasko. If any bird ran away, reload.
- Get three safe returns at each level from 1 through 5, raising them with greens between rounds and restoring Heart before every trip.
- Finish with four level 5 Bold chocobos as runners and send them to the Calm Lands once more.
- Back at the ranch, a scene reveals the passage.
Runaways never count. Save before every collection.
The Ruin Depths
Five sliding walls, all approached from the south. Open the middle one first; the others stay shut until you do.
Anything Eater waits behind it.
- 11,600 HP. For five turns it casts Firaga, Blizzaga, Thundaga, Flare or Osmose. On the sixth it attacks for the target’s maximum HP. Its basic attack also strips buffs, and it counters with it.
- With HP this low you can usually win before the sixth turn. Count turns and have a Phoenix Down ready anyway.
- Oversouled it has 36,980 HP and adds Dispel; Auto-Reflect wins that version.
- Steal Mega-Potion. It drops Power Gloves.
Then open the other four walls. The chests:
| Contents | Note |
|---|---|
| Machina Reactor | Key item: Rikku’s special dressphere breaks the 9,999 damage limit |
| The ABC’s of Repair | Rematch ticket for the machine at Djose |
| AP Egg | Triple AP |
| Pixie Dust | Magic +40 |
| Mythril Bangle | Max HP +60% |
| Cat’s Bell | |
| Wizard Bracelet | |
| Rune Bracer | Max MP +100%; some lists leave this chest out |
| Shining Gem x2 | |
| Blessed Gem x2 | |
| Mega-Potion x2 | |
| Mega Phoenix x2 | |
| Turbo Ether x2 | |
| Stamina Spring x2 | |
| Mana Spring x2 | |
| Poison Fang x2 |
Behind the fifth and last wall is the Amazing Chocobo. Clasko’s scene with it (“They make a cute couple, don’t you think?”) is a Story Completion line and the ranch’s own Episode Complete, which counts toward Mascot. You also get the Higher Power grid and Chocobo Whisperer.
