Final Fantasy X-2 Fiend Capture: Creature Creator and the Fiend Arena

Updated 2026-10-10

Full spoilers.

The Creature Creator was added in the International release and is part of the HD Remaster. You trap fiends (and a few people) around Spira, raise them like party members, put them in your party, and enter them in tournaments in the Fiend Arena. It does not count toward Story Completion and nothing in the story needs it.

What it does give you: the Psychic dressphere, four garment grids that exist nowhere else (Intrepid, Abominable, Peerless, Last Resort), a second Iron Duke, a second shot at the Mascot dressphere, and the Lifetime Support achievement.

Getting started

It opens in Chapter 1, the first time you are back on the Celsius after the Luca opening. Talk to Shinra on the bridge and choose Creature Creator! You start with one small Trap Pod.

From the menu you can:

  • Trap Creature: set and collect Trap Pods.
  • Party Members / Organize Team: put creatures in your party or your arena team.
  • Develop Creature: teach abilities and equip them.
  • Creature History: read fiend tales and release creatures.
  • Fiend Arena: tournaments and the Battle Simulator.

Do one thing right away: win the Standard Cup once for Psychic (see below). It is easy at Chapter 1 levels.

Trapping

  1. In Trap Creature, pick one of the 15 locations: Besaid, Kilika, Luca, Mi’ihen Highroad, Mushroom Rock Road, Djose, the Moonflow, Guadosalam, the Thunder Plains, Macalania, Bikanel, Bevelle, the Calm Lands, Mt. Gagazet and the Zanarkand Ruins.
  2. Pick a Trap Pod. Each location can hold one pod at a time.
  3. Choose Round Up! to collect it. If Shinra pops out of the pod, nothing matching it was caught.

Save before you round up, so you can reload a bad catch.

Trap Pods

Pod Catches
S (small) A random small fiend from that location
M (medium) A random medium fiend
L (large) A random large fiend
SP (special) A family you choose (Machina, Helm, Elemental, Humanoid, Flan, Drake and so on). The only pod that can catch people.

You can hold eight pods and keep eight creatures. To keep a ninth, release one. You cannot hold two of the same fiend.

More pods come from:

  • The end of Chapters 1–4. Accept them when you are offered them.
  • Fiend Arena tournaments, win or lose.
  • Releasing a creature whose tale is finished.
  • Running out. Leave the Trap Creature screen with none and you are given a small or medium pod.

What you can catch, and when

The roster at each location changes with the chapter and with the story. Opening the Fiend Colony, Cactuar Hollow, the New Cave, the Ruin Depths, the Via Infinito, the Farplane or the Den of Woe swaps some of the catches in that area.

People worth knowing about:

  • Yaibal, Elma and Lucil: only if the Awesome Sphere went to the Youth League, Chapters 2–4.
  • Baralai, Gippal and Nooj: after you clear the Den of Woe in Chapter 5. Nooj is an SP-pod catch at Mushroom Rock Road.
  • Leblanc, Logos and Ormi, Lulu and Kimahri: New Game Plus only.

Three fiends, Aka Manah, Aeshma and Jahi, cannot be trapped at all. Each appears when you release the one before it (a Daeva becomes Aka Manah, and so on).

Your creatures in battle

  • A trapped creature joins at a level based on the average of Yuna’s, Rikku’s and Paine’s levels.
  • Size decides party space. A small creature takes one slot. A medium one takes two, leaving room for one other member. A large one fills the party on its own.
  • Creatures level up from battles like the girls do. Learn abilities by being hit by certain attacks, or in Develop Creature by feeding them items. Each holds four abilities and four auto-abilities, and learning a new one means dropping an old one. The item you feed is used up, so feed potions, not Ribbons.
  • They take garment grids, dresspheres and accessories.
  • Each has a cheer gauge of one to five stars that decides how well it follows orders. New catches mostly do as they like.

Large creatures are the easy option early: teach one Vigor and it will carry most of a first playthrough.

Fiend tales and releasing

Each creature has one of three things in Creature History: a fiend tale (three to five story levels), a fayth fragment, or nothing.

  • A story level unlocks each time the creature gains a level. It does not matter how many levels; one level-up is one step.
  • Fiend Tale Bonus. At the end of Chapters 1 to 4, every creature you hold gets a free story level. Winning a cup gives it to the creatures that fought, if they are at or below that cup’s level cutoff (see the cup table).
  • Release a creature with a finished tale to see its ending. It goes into the Creature Creator’s own bestiary, you get a Trap Pod back if you have room, and many releases unlock something: a new arena team, a new catch, an evolution, an item or a garment grid.
  • Releasing through the naming screen removes a creature without the ending.

The level 99 trap. A creature caught when your party is at 99 joins at 99, can never level, and can never finish its tale (the one exception is winning the Farplane Cup with it). The Aeon Cup, the Fiend World Cup chain and Lifetime Support all need finished tales. Do your tale work while the girls are well under the cap, ideally 85 or lower in Chapter 5. If you are already maxed, New Game Plus resets your creatures to level 1 but keeps their abilities.

To see an ending without losing the creature, save, release it, watch, and reload.

Fayth fragments: unlocking the aeons

Eight creatures carry a fayth fragment instead of a tale. Raise one five levels and release it, and its aeon joins the Fiend Arena. All eight unlock the Aeon Cup.

Release Unlocks
Flame Dragon Ifrit
Flan Blanco Shiva
Mycotoxin Valefor
Machina Striker Ixion
Azi Dahaka Bahamut
Critical Bug Yojimbo
Aranea Anima
Jumbo Cactuar The Magus Sisters

Flame Dragon needs a large pod at Besaid in Chapters 1–4 (Luca in Chapter 5). Catch it early.

The Fiend Arena

Tournaments are knockout brackets of eight teams; win three matches to take a cup. You do not lose anything for losing, and you still get Trap Pods. HP, MP and status reset between matches, except in the Fiend Portal, the Fiend World Cup and the Almighty Shinra Cup. A loss in the Fiend Portal is a Game Over. Set Fiend Arena Config to Short to skip the matches you are not in. Tournament progress carries into New Game Plus.

Fiend World Cup The Fiend Portal chain (below) AP Egg, Gold Hairpin, Soul of Thamasa, Adamantite 89
Farplane Cup Win every other cup Ragnarok, Key to Success, Force of Nature, Iron Duke 99

Prizes come in the order listed; once a cup’s list runs out, repeat wins hand out earlier prizes at random. Many cups add new opponent teams as you win more or release particular creatures.

Psychic. Standard Cup, first win. Everyone at about level 7 with plain attacks and first-tier magic is enough. It is the International dressphere you can only get here.

Mascot. The Youth League Tournament’s first prize is a second route to the Mascot dressphere if you lost it in Chapter 5. It is a long road: six Grand Cup: Hard wins first.

The Fiend Portal chain

The longest chain in the Creature Creator, and the way to the Fiend World Cup and Almighty Shinra:

  1. Trap a Daeva and finish its tale. Release it: it becomes Aka Manah. Finish and release that for Aeshma, then Jahi. Releasing Jahi starts a Shinra mission, “Capture the Fiend Traitor!”.
  2. Trap a Tomb and finish it; that opens Dolmen as a catch. Finish Dolmen.
  3. After reaching the Farplane Glen, trap a Monolith, finish it, and release it as Ultima Weapon. Its release opens the Fiend Portal.
  4. Beat Omega Weapon in the Fiend Portal (a loss is a Game Over) and recruit it. The Portal becomes the Fiend World Cup.
  5. Finish Omega Weapon’s tale and Shinra turns into Almighty Shinra. The Fiend World Cup becomes the Almighty Shinra Cup until you beat and recruit him. Releasing him gives the Last Resort garment grid (unconfirmed — other lists place it as the Demon Cup’s first-win prize or a 200,000-credit Calm Lands prize).

Recruiting from the arena

Some fighters can only be had by beating them. After the prize, the game asks “Allow into Gullwings?” Say yes.

  • Farplane Cup: Seymour after one win, Auron after two, Tidus after three.
  • Omega Weapon from the Fiend Portal and Almighty Shinra from his cup.

Released recruits only come back by winning the Farplane Cup again, and a known bug can stop them rejoining at all. Think before you release them.

The Battle Simulator

Refight any team you have met, as often as you like. You keep experience, AP and items but get no Trap Pods. It is the best power-levelling spot in the game, and the way to learn Blue Bullets from one-time enemies, including the Mortar and Drill Shot you may have missed in the Den of Woe (Gippal and Baralai are in the Youth League Tournament). Releasing a fayth-fragment creature adds its aeon to the list.

Notable creatures

Creature How Why
Machina Hunter, Ranger, Leader Small pods in Luca and Bikanel (Hunter), Luca and Mi’ihen from Chapter 3 (Ranger), the Thunder Plains in Chapter 5 after the New Cave (Leader) Impale ignores defense, charges instantly and has a short animation. Raise their Agility.
Mushroom Cloud Small pod in Bevelle, Chapter 5, once you have started the Via Infinito Pernicious Powder stacks unresistable Strength Down and Magic Down on every enemy. Also casts Ultima.
Almighty Shinra End of the Fiend Portal chain The strongest creature in the game. Struggles against very high defense.
Heavy Sallet Large or SP pod in Bikanel, Chapter 5, after Cactuar Hollow opens Learns Quick Hit on its own.
Chocobo Small pod in Luca (any chapter); Mi’ihen and the Calm Lands in Chapters 1–4 High Agility and Magic, learns Choco Meteor, and you need one for the Chocobo Cup.
Hexapod Small pod on the Mi’ihen Highroad, Chapter 5, after the Fiend Colony opens Casts Ultima.
Nooj SP pod at Mushroom Rock Road after the Den of Woe A strong human fighter.
Logos SP pod in Guadosalam, New Game Plus Strong human fighter.

Shinra’s Bestiary is something else

The Monster Master achievement is for Shinra’s Bestiary, the in-game record of fiends you have fought, including their Oversouled forms. It is not the Creature Creator’s list of released creatures. Most of the Bestiary gets filled in the Via Infinito and the Fiend Colony; see the Via Infinito guide.

Once every creature has been completed and released, Shinra himself takes the last slot in the Creature Creator’s bestiary, and his ending offers to close the game and start New Game Plus.

Achievements

  • Lifetime Support: view one complete fiend tale. The only achievement that needs the Creature Creator directly.
  • Psychic, Mascot and the arena grids feed other achievements and the dressphere and garment-grid collections.
