The Calm Lands Campaigns in Final Fantasy X-2
Updated 2026-10-10
Full spoilers.
Two side jobs start the first time you reach the Calm Lands in Chapter 1 and pay out in Chapter 5. Publicity is the one that matters: the Chapter 5 showdown it sets up is a Story Completion scene and the Calm Lands Episode Complete. Marriage is a side bet for an accessory.
The habit that makes both painless: from Chapter 1 on, press the campaign button beside everyone you pass (Square on PlayStation, X on an Xbox pad). Points carry from chapter to chapter.
Chapter 1: signing up
The arrival scene, with Rikku and Paine explaining the two rival companies, is a Story Completion line on its own.
Three attractions are open: Lupine Dash in the southwest, Sky Slots in the north and Reptile Run in the northeast. Each has two attendants: Open Air, Inc. on the left, Argent, Inc. on the right. Talk to either, choose the Publicity menu and “Sign me up!”.
Then walk to the travel agency in the middle of the plains. The man to the right of the counter wants a wife for his son. Either answer to his first question works; choose “Why not!?” to take the job.
Both campaigns run side by side from here.
Open Air or Argent?
For Story Completion it does not matter. Either company reaches the Chapter 5 showdown. What changes is the prize counter: each company stocks a different list of accessories, and each has one exclusive attraction later on.
- Open Air leans toward Strength gear: Power Wrist, Titanium Bangle, Black Belt, Hyper Wrist, Tetra Gloves, and the Disaster in Bloom grid.
- Argent leans toward Magic and support: Defense Veil, Tarot Card, Hypno Crown, Pixie Dust, Soul of Thamasa, Tetra Bracelet, the White and Black Tomes, and the Flash of Steel grid.
If you want one thing from that list badly, pick its company. Otherwise pick either and stop thinking about it.
Earning Publicity
Every person in Spira you can pitch to has five replies. The best is worth 5 points, the rest 0 to 3. Nothing tells you which is which, so save before a run of pitches and reload a bad one if you care.
The target is 400 points. Top prizes also check your company’s PR level, which tops out at 5; you can read it at any attendant.
- Chapters 1–3: pitch everywhere. You do not need to backtrack to earlier areas; talking to people as you play gets there.
- Watch for one-chance people. The boy under the ruins between the Mi’ihen Highroad and Mushroom Rock Road in Chapter 3 cannot be pitched to after that chapter’s mission there.
- Chapter 4 has one top-up stop. The Calm Lands are closed, but the people along the Moonflow still listen (one account adds an old woman just outside Guadosalam; the others list the Moonflow only). After the Moonflow mission, that window shuts.
- Chapter 5: playing the attractions also raises your company’s publicity. If you arrive short, you can still play your way past 400.
Earning Marriage points
Same button, but only women count. The target is 70 points; one guide sets the line at 30, so treat 70 as safe. The more points you bank, the more women turn up when the father’s son finally proposes.
The attractions
Credits cost 10 gil each from any attendant. Until the Chapter 5 showdown your credits belong to one company; afterwards the two pools merge.
Lupine Dash. Bet on a lupine race. A Win Bet picks the winner; a Double Bet picks the top two in either order. The favourite finishes in the top two almost nine times in ten, so a Double Bet on the best odds is the steady play. Read Flux, then Rally, then Speed on each runner’s card.
Sky Slots. Press the button to stop each reel. The reels sometimes slip after you press, so press a touch early. Learn the fiends that are easy to read at speed. This is the only attraction where skill turns a reliable credit profit.
Reptile Run. Steer a gecko up the board, left, middle or right each step, against a timer. The level 4 board is fixed, so you can memorise a path. Take your winnings at the top and start again.
Feed the Monkey (Argent) sits off the Mt. Gagazet road. Pick one of five fruit chests each turn and keep the monkey’s weight between 5 and 100. Check the fruit shown at the top first; call Rikku for heavier fruit or Paine for lighter, or quit and cash out. Ten fruits returns your stake; twenty returns just over seven times it. Opening the same chest three turns running brings the Forbidden Fruit (+150 weight), so switch chests on the third turn.
Gull Force (Open Air) sits off the Macalania road. A shooting gallery: five targets a wave, one shot each, and a minimum hit count per round or you lose the bet. Stage 3 adds spinning decoys that turn the opposite way to the real targets; pausing as they start to spin makes the real ones easier to pick out. Bets go to 1,000 credits, and payouts reach 10x by round 2-4 and 200x by round 3-4.
Both company-only games are tied to their company winning the publicity race.
The prize counter
Prizes cost credits. The basics are on both counters: Potion (10), Phoenix Down (30), Budget Grenade (50), Hi-Potion (150). Beyond that, each company adds stock as the chapters go on. “PR” is the publicity level the prize needs.

| 5 | Flash of Steel (grid) | 200,000 (PR 5, after the Calm Lands episode) |
One widely used list files the Sword Tome and Bushido Tome under Argent and the Gold Bracer under Open Air. If a prize you want is missing from your counter, check the other company’s.
Last Resort, a third grid, appears on one prize list for 200,000 credits on both counters under the same conditions. That is unconfirmed: the most specific account makes it the reward for releasing Almighty Shinra in the Fiend Arena (see the Creature Creator guide).
None of the prizes are needed for Story Completion. The 200,000-credit grids are the only real grind, and Sky Slots is the way to fund them.
Chapter 5: the payoff
The showdown plays the moment you land. The two companies are at each other’s throats. With your publicity past 400, Tobli flies in on a hover (“Yup-yup! I can taste it in the air!”) and merges the two into one outfit. That is a Story Completion line and the Calm Lands Episode Complete.
One guide says both companies need over 400 for Tobli to appear. If he does not show with your company past 400, play the other company’s attractions until it passes too, fly out and come back.
After the merger each attraction keeps one attendant, the hovers run more stops, and credits pool.
Hover passes. The man in green to the left of the agency shop hands over the Calm Lands Free Pass if a company reached PR level 5. Earlier, riding the agency hover enough earns the Calm Lands Discount Pass, which halves the fare.
The Marriage payout. Talk to the man behind the agency counter:
| Matchmaking points | Reward |
|---|---|
| Over the threshold (70) | Speed Bracer (Auto-Haste) |
| Under it | Elixir |
The 50,000 gil chest and Sword Lore. A chest holding 50,000 gil sits on the hill behind the agency. Open it, then talk to the father who gave you the Marriage Campaign. He asks whether you have seen 50,000 gil lying around:
- “Actually, I did” hands the gil back and earns Sword Lore.
- The other answer keeps the gil and earns nothing.
Take the Sword Lore. Fifty thousand gil comes back fast.
