The Blitzball Guide for Final Fantasy X
Updated 2026-10-10
Full spoilers.
Blitzball is optional except for one story match in Luca, and you can ignore it for the whole game. Three things make it worth learning anyway: Wakka’s three later Overdrive sets, the Jupiter Sigil that finishes his celestial weapon, and the World Champion weapon itself. None of them can come from anywhere else.
What you need, in one list
| Prize | Where it comes from | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Jecht Shot (Tidus technique) | The ball on the S.S. Winno’s deck | Pass the button-input mini-game on the way to Luca |
| Attack Reels | First place in a tournament | None — your first tournament win |
| Status Reels | First place in a league | Attack Reels in hand, and 250 battles fought |
| Aurochs Reels | First place in a tournament | Status Reels in hand, and 450 battles fought |
| Jupiter Sigil | First place in a league | Aurochs Reels in hand; it shows up on about half of league prize lists |
| World Champion | Bartender in Luca’s café | Third place or better in a tournament, and the Celestial Mirror |
| Jupiter Crest | Locked locker at the back of the Besaid Aurochs’ locker room, Luca stadium | Free, any time after the story tournament |
The reels must come in that order. Wakka does not have to be on your blitzball team to earn any of them.
How a match works
A match is two five-minute halves inside a sphere of water. Each side fields six players — left and right forwards, a midfielder, left and right defenders and a goalie — from a roster of up to eight. You only steer the player with the ball. Your side is green, the opponents red.
Controls. Pick Manual A. The stick follows the radar in the corner, so pushing toward the opponents’ goal on the radar swims that way. Manual B follows the camera instead and is harder to read. Auto hands everything to the computer. Triangle (or the equivalent on your controller) switches modes mid-match. Stop moving to open the pass and shoot menu.
The stats.
| Stat | What it does |
|---|---|
| HP | Spent while you hold the ball and when you use techniques; refills when you do not have it |
| SP | Swimming speed |
| EN | Your staying power in an encounter — when it hits zero you lose the ball |
| AT | How hard you tackle (cuts the carrier’s EN) |
| PA | Pass strength |
| BL | Block strength against passes and shots |
| SH | Shot strength |
| CA | The goalie’s catch strength |
Encounters. When defenders reach the ball carrier, the game stops and you choose. Break pits your EN against each defender’s AT; each defender knocks off between half and one-and-a-half times their AT. Run out of EN and the ball is theirs. Get through everyone and you can keep dribbling. No Break passes or shoots immediately, but every defender in the encounter gets to put their BL against it.
Shooting. Your SH falls the further the ball travels, so shoot close. Defenders in an encounter knock off some of it with BL, then the goalie’s CA takes off between half and one-and-a-half times its value. Anything left over is a goal. A shot taken before anyone reaches you skips the defenders entirely and only has to beat the goalie.
Experience. Players level from passing, shooting, tackling and blocking — just from touching the ball. Higher levels mean better stats and more technique slots.
The three ways to play
- League. Ten games against the five other teams. A win is 3 points, a draw 1. Final standings decide the prizes.
- Tournament. Knockout, two or three rounds. Lose once and you are out.
- Exhibition. One game against a team you choose. No prizes and no experience, but you can learn techniques, and you can forfeit freely.
You can only forfeit a league or tournament game while you are losing.
Prizes and the reload trick
Each league and tournament shows its prize list before you start. What is on that list is what you can win — and the list is locked once you begin. When one of Wakka’s reels or the Jupiter Sigil is due, it takes the first-place slot.
So: save at a Save Sphere, open blitzball, and read the first-place prize before you start anything. If the thing you want is not there, reload and look again. Do not start a league or tournament that is offering the wrong prize.
The everyday prizes are not worth much. First in a league pays things like Megalixirs, Three Stars, Underdog’s Secrets and Dark Matter; first in a tournament mostly pays a technique, X-Potions or Elixirs. Lower places pay techniques and ordinary items.
Wakka’s reels
Wakka’s Overdrive is a slot machine. He starts with the Element Reels.
- Element Reels — from the start. Matching elements deal that element’s damage; three of a kind hits every enemy.
- Attack Reels — each reel shows one or two hits and the total is the number of strikes; three matching doubles it, so 2-2-2 is twelve hits. The best of the four for damage, and the cheapest to get: win any tournament.
- Status Reels — skulls inflict poison, sleep, silence or darkness, timers inflict petrify or slow, a down arrow breaks every stat. Three of a kind hits the whole party of enemies. Needs a league win once you have the Attack Reels and 250 battles behind you.
- Aurochs Reels — a mix of all the symbols plus an Aurochs crest, with a special attack on three crests. Weaker in practice than the Attack Reels because they are hard to line up. Needs a tournament win once you have the Status Reels and 450 battles behind you.
Having all three later reels unlocks the Blitzball Master achievement.
The Jupiter Sigil and World Champion
Once the Aurochs Reels are in, the Jupiter Sigil starts appearing as the first-place prize of leagues — roughly one league in two. Use the reload trick: if a new league does not offer it, reload rather than play ten games for nothing.
World Champion is Wakka’s celestial weapon. Place third or better in a tournament, then take the Celestial Mirror to the bartender in Luca’s café; he hands the ball over. The Jupiter Crest is in the locked locker at the back of the Besaid Aurochs’ locker room in the Luca stadium. Crest and Sigil together power the weapon up fully (Break Damage Limit, Triple Overdrive, Double AP, Evade & Counter). The celestial weapons guide covers the rest of the set.
The Jecht Shot
On the S.S. Winno, on the way to Luca, walk to the ball at the front of the deck. After a practice, taunts flash up one after another: press the matching direction with confirm before each one disappears. Land it and Tidus has the Jecht Shot for every match — it knocks the first two defenders out of the way, so their BL and CA never touch the shot, and adds a little SH. It also earns Striker. Fail and you can reload; a later boat crossing gives you another go.
Its value is the defenders it removes, not power. With nobody between Tidus and the goalie, a plain shot or Sphere Shot is cheaper.
Recruiting
Talk to a player and press the scout button (Square on a PlayStation pad, X on an Xbox pad) to see their team, fee and contract. Free agents sign on the spot. You pay a fee per game. Your roster holds eight.
Your scouting improves with wins: stats at 10, current techniques at 20, key techniques at 30.
Players under contract become available only when their contract runs out and their team does not re-sign them. Scout them to see how many games are left. To speed it up: play exhibitions against their team, forfeiting at once, until they have one game left. Save. Play one more and forfeit. If the team re-signs them, reload and try again.
Who to sign
The original Aurochs are weak. Replace them as better players come free; Letty’s passing and Datto’s early shooting hold up longest.
Early free agents, signable after Luca:
| Player | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Jumal | Luca seaport, the square | One of the best early signings; carries Tackle Slip |
| Wedge | Luca stadium, main gate | Cheap and useful in several positions, goal included |
| Ropp | Mi’ihen Highroad travel agency | The best defender in the game: high AT and BL, Drain Tackle |
| Kyou | Djose Temple | Good stopgap defender |
| Miyu | Moonflow, north bank | Goalie whose CA climbs fast — use her until Nimrook is free |
Later, once the airship is yours:
| Player | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Nimrook | Airship corridor (Al Bhed Psyches) | The best goalie by a distance. His team re-signs him often; use the contract trick |
| Brother | Airship bridge | The fastest midfielder and an excellent passer; Sphere Shot is one of his key techniques |
| Larbeight | Kilika docks (Kilika Beasts) | The strongest pure shooter |
| Kulukan | Kilika tavern (Kilika Beasts) | A strong second defender |
Tidus is still one of your best forwards all game because of the Jecht Shot.
A team that wins everything: Tidus and Larbeight up front, Brother in the middle, Ropp and a second strong defender at the back, Nimrook in goal.
Techniques
Each player can equip techniques once they reach level 3 — one slot at first, up to five by level 30. Every technique costs HP to use.
Learning them. Before a match or at half-time, Mark an opponent who uses a technique you want. When they use it in play, Techcopy flashes in the corner — press confirm while it is lit. Low-level players cannot copy from high-level ones. Each player also has three key techniques; learning them opens up the next tier. Some techniques only come as league or tournament prizes.
The ones worth having:
- Super Goalie — a frequent CA boost for your goalie.
- Tackle Slip and Tackle Slip 2 — your carrier dodges tackles.
- Anti-Drain and Anti-Nap — shrug off the AI’s favourite tackles.
- Drain Tackle — steals HP on every tackle; Ropp starts with it.
- Elite Defense — defenders find the carrier from further away. A prize technique.
- Sphere Shot and Invisible Shot — cheap SH boosts for your forwards.
- Jecht Shot 2 — ignores three defenders and adds a lot of SH, at a huge HP cost. Tidus earns it as a tournament prize after learning his key techniques.
Learn techniques in exhibitions: nothing is at stake and you can forfeit once you have what you came for.
The efficient path
- S.S. Winno: land the Jecht Shot.
- Luca final: win if you can (Strength Sphere, Teamwork!), but it changes nothing.
- Right after Luca: sign Jumal and Wedge. Pick up Ropp, Kyou and Miyu as the road reaches them.
- Win one tournament for the Attack Reels. This is the only reel worth chasing early — it is Wakka’s best damage until the end of the game.
- Ignore blitzball until the airship. The reels after this are gated on battle counts you will only reach late, and the best players are not free until then.
- With the airship: sign Brother, chase Nimrook’s contract, add Larbeight. Learn techniques in exhibitions.
- Grab the Celestial Mirror, place third or better in a tournament, and collect World Champion in the Luca café. Take the Jupiter Crest from the locker room while you are there.
- At 250 battles: reload until a league offers the Status Reels, then win it.
- At 450 battles: reload until a tournament offers the Aurochs Reels, then win it.
- Last: reload until a league offers the Jupiter Sigil, then win it.
