Bikanel Island
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
Tidus wakes up on his own, in water, in a desert. The job here is simple: find everyone. The desert is generous on the way, so walk into every corner.
The oasis
A large bird attacks before you have your bearings. You start the fight alone and get help partway through. Its big attack hits everyone hard, but its wings glow the turn before — heal on the glow. Once it is badly hurt it lands and stops using that attack.
Afterwards, swim to the lower left of the pool for a chest on the bottom, then save. The first friend you find is just to the north, with a chest beside him full of potions.
Finding the others
The next stretch of sand is a short loop. One friend is stuck in an alcove off to the right; another is round the bend to the north, with two chests beside her. There is a Save Sphere here too.
Follow on north and look for a side path on the left with a chest at the end.
The little green fiends in the desert dodge nearly everything and can kill a character in one hit. Overdrives never miss. Save them for these — they are worth a lot of AP.
The middle of the desert
A big open area. Sweep it: a chest in the middle, one behind the rocks to the north-west, one in the far west corner, and one beside the Save Sphere.
West of the Save Sphere are some ruined walls with an Elixir in the south-west corner and two more chests in the northern enclosure — one of them is 10,000 gil. An Al Bhed Primer lies near a half-buried building just north of the ruins, and a second is on the ground below a signpost on the right-hand side, before you head north.
The sinkholes
The last part of the desert has a few chests at the bottom of sand whirlpools. One that sits in the open slides into a pit when you touch it, and a plant-like fiend comes up after you. Beat it and the chest is yours — the pits hold the best items in the desert. The fiend’s confusion is the only thing to watch for.
There is also something shiny at the bottom of a whirlpool in a small alcove on the left. Take it; you will not use it for a long time.
The way east is blocked by a sandstorm. One last fiend blocks the way north. Beat it and keep going.
Worth doing on a first run

Completionist mode. Full spoilers, in play order, with every permanent loss called out before you reach it.
Spoilers from here.
Sin dropped the party across Bikanel. Yuna is not here — the Guado have her — and everyone else is scattered through the Sanubia Desert. Nothing in the desert is lost when you leave: you can fly back later. The losses start next door, at Home.
The desert is also the safety net for four early Primers. If you missed Vol. I (salvage ship), Vol. III (S.S. Liki), Vol. V (S.S. Winno) or Vol. XIV (Rin at the Thunder Plains), a spare copy lies here. They only appear if the original is missing from your key items.
The oasis: Zu
Tidus fights Zu alone; Auron joins, then Lulu. Sonic Boom hits the party for around 600, and Zu’s wings glow the turn before it fires — heal on the glow. Slow Zu, Haste Tidus, Power Break with Auron, and use Delay Attack to buy turns. Below about a third of its HP Zu drops to the ground and cannot use Sonic Boom again.
- Remedy x4 — chest on the bottom at the lower left of the pool.
- Primer Vol. I (spare) — north-east part of the oasis screen.
- Save here.
Just north is Wakka, with the Al Bhed First Aid Kit — eight Al Bhed Potions straight to your inventory. Primer Vol. III (spare) is under his tent.
East: Kimahri and Rikku
Kimahri is in the alcove to the right, stuck on a dune; Primer Vol. V (spare) is by the rubble near him. Rikku is back round the dogleg to the north, with Ether x2 and another Al Bhed Potion x8 beside her, and a Save Sphere — a free heal, since Yuna is not around to do it.
Primer Vol. XIV (spare) is in the small dead-end shortly after you find Rikku. Following her north, a section on the left holds Hi-Potion x4.
Rikku’s Steal destroys the Al Bhed machina here in one move.
Cactuars start appearing. Huge evasion, 10,000 Needles is an instant KO, and normal attacks barely scratch them. Overdrives always hit, so save them for Cactuars — the AP is excellent.
Central
- Hi-Potion x4 — in the middle of the open sand.
- X-Potion x2 — north-west, behind the rock formation.
- Mega-Potion x2 — far west corner.
- Al Bhed Potion x8 — next to the north-west Save Sphere. The sign reads “weaker fiend to the right, stronger fiend to the left”. Believe it. Sand Worms in this desert have huge HP; run unless you want the AP.
- Elixir — the ruins west of the Save Sphere, south-west corner.
- Lv. 2 Key Sphere and 10,000 gil — the northern enclosure of the ruins.
- Al Bhed Primer Vol. XVII — by the half-buried building just north of the enclosures, in the western ruins.
- Al Bhed Primer Vol. XVIII — on the ground beneath the signpost on the right-hand side, before the two paths north. Both paths lead to the same place.
West: the sinkholes and the Mercury Crest
- Hi-Potion x8 — outside a small alcove on the left of the northern stretch.
- Mercury Crest — at the bottom of the sand whirlpool in that alcove. Half of what Rikku’s Godhand needs; the other half is the Mercury Sigil, from the Cactuar side quest here later. Nothing to do with it yet.
- Megalixir x3 — the chest north-east of the crest slides into a sinkhole as you touch it and a Sandragora comes up. Win, and the chest is yours.
- Mega-Potion x3 — just west of that sinkhole.
- X-Potion x2 — north of the Mega-Potions.
- Teleport Sphere x2 — the eastern sinkhole, another Sandragora.
Sandragora are not tough, but they confuse. Take Waterstrike off your weapons, wear Confuse Ward or Confuseproof if you have it, and use Armor Break and Sleep to speed things up.
The east is blocked by a sandstorm. A third Sandragora sits on the path north; beat it and walk on to Home.
Coming back
Once you can fly anywhere, Bikanel opens up again. The Cactuar Village side quest (the ten Cactuar Gnomes, and the Mercury Sigil at the end of it) lives here, the sandstorm clears, and on this version Dark Ifrit waits in the desert’s far end. Dark Ifrit is covered in the Dark Aeons guide.
