Macalania Woods
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
Macalania Woods is pretty, winding, and full of water-element fiends. That last part matters: if Tidus is still carrying the sword with Waterstrike, you will be healing things. Swap to anything without it, and give Lulu a turn in every fight.
The southern woods
Take the left-hand branch path up from the entrance. Just around the second bend, behind a tree, is a hidden chest with a doll for Lulu. Further along the main path, near the exit, a chest holds 2,000 gil.
The big winged beasts are the toughest regular fight here. If Kimahri is in your party, use Lancet on one — he learns a new breath attack from it.
The central woods
On the second screen, a chest with three Phoenix Downs is half-hidden behind a tree at the top of the loop on the mini-map.
Someone along the path will tell you about the butterflies. The game that follows is optional, and the prizes worth having come much later. Skip it.
The northern woods
One path, no turnings. A chest with a Remedy sits behind a tree at the sharp bend. You will see it if you glance left.
The merchant on the road
There is a Save Sphere and a familiar merchant. Open his shop, leave without buying, and when he asks about his prices, tell him they are too expensive — he lowers them. This is the first place you can buy Hi-Potions.
Then walk down the right-hand path past him to its dead end, above the blue rock outcrop. An Al Bhed Primer is hidden in the foliage between the stump and the tree. It is almost invisible — press the action button as you run along the edge.
The boss
Save first. The boss has no fixed weakness: whenever you hit it, it answers with a basic spell, and that spell tells you what it is weak to. Fire means use ice, ice means use fire, lightning means use water, water means use lightning. Hit the weakness and it changes, so test again.
Bring Lulu, keep one fighter tapping it to read the element, and have Yuna heal. Late on it uses an attack that halves everyone’s HP; heal through it.
You get a key item afterwards that gives Auron something new. Read what the game tells you about it. There is a small reason to walk back to the woods’ entrance before you move on — check the right side of the path where it splits.

Completionist mode. Full spoilers, in play order, with every permanent loss called out before you reach it.
Spoilers from here.
Nothing in Macalania Woods is permanently missable. What this area opens is more important than what it holds: beating Spherimorph gives you Jecht’s Sphere, and from that moment the other Jecht Spheres appear across Spira. This is the cheapest time to collect most of them.
The southern woods
- Sleepy Cait Sith — hidden chest on the upper-left branch path, behind a tree at the second bend. A Lulu doll.
- 2,000 gil — on the main path near the exit, behind a Guado.
Most fiends here are water. Take Waterstrike off the Brotherhood — the Farplane upgrade gave it — and fight with Lightningstrike if you have it.
Aqua Breath. Kimahri learns it by Lancet on a Chimera (about 5,250 HP). Provoke it and it only casts Thundara; Silence it and it does nothing. Blue Elements and Chimeras are both worth a steal.
The central woods
- Phoenix Down x3 — behind a tree at the top of the loop on the second screen.
Barthello is here looking for Dona. A local explains the butterfly hunt: touch the rainbow butterfly, catch every blue one in the time limit, avoid red ones (red starts a stronger fight). The courses pay small prizes now and better ones after later story points; the last set includes Kimahri’s Saturn Sigil. It is a late-game job for the celestial weapons guide. Do it with No Encounters armor.
The northern woods
- Remedy — behind a tree on the left at the sharp bend.
Lake Road
Save. O’aka XXIII is here: open the shop, back out, and tell him his prices are too expensive for a discount. Hi-Potions go on sale for the first time.
Al Bhed Primer Vol. XV — down the right-hand path past O’aka, dead end above the blue rock outcrop, between the stump and the tree. Hard to see; mash the action button along the edge.
Auron cuts open a hidden path north of O’aka and leads the party to the spring.
Boss: Spherimorph
12,000 HP. Spherimorph counters every hit with a tier-one spell, and the counter reveals the weakness (counter → weak to): Fire → Ice, Blizzard → Fire, Thunder → Water, Water → Thunder. It absorbs the other elements. Hitting the weakness triggers Elemental Shift and a new random element, so retest with a physical hit each time. Late in the fight Press halves everyone’s max HP.
Open with Auron’s Power Break and Magic Break, rotate people in for AP, and settle on Tidus (probe, no elemental strike on his weapon), Lulu (tier-two spells) and Yuna (Cure, Shell, the Nul spells). Steal: Ether, rare Turbo Ether. Drop: Lv. 2 Key Sphere, two on an overkill.
Jecht’s Sphere
The win hands you Jecht’s Sphere. Auron learns Shooting Star, and Jecht Spheres now exist around Spira. Three unlock Banishing Blade, ten unlock Tornado and the Messenger from the Past achievement.
The second Macalania sphere is on the ground on the right side of the south entrance, where the path splits. It was not there before.
Backtrack now
From here you can walk all the way south: Thunder Plains, Guadosalam, the Moonflow, Mushroom Rock Road, the Mi’ihen Highroad and Luca, then boats to Kilika and Besaid for the S.S. Liki and Besaid spheres. Put Tidus with two slow characters and flee from everything.
Besaid is the one that matters. Once the airship is yours, Dark Valefor blocks Besaid Village until you beat it, and that is one of the hardest fights in the game. Every other sphere can wait for the airship. Besaid can wait too — but only if you are prepared to fight a Dark Aeon for it.
When you are done, Lake Road continues north to Lake Macalania.
