Chapter 2: Mt. Gagazet and Zanarkand

Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.

7 things here are lost permanently. Everything below is worth taking as you pass it. The completionist tab lists every one of them with the exact moment it stops being obtainable.

Mt. Gagazet: talk first

Kimahri is at the Mountain Gate. Talk to him twice. In the second conversation he asks what he should do about the restless young Ronso. Tell him “You have to figure this out on your own.”

The other Ronso around the gate, plus one guard in the cave further up, each have a worry to share. Talk to all of them. The calm, sensible answer is the right one every time — the reply that asks them to slow down and think about the consequences, or that agrees the elder is tired.

The teleport pad near the gate skips three empty stretches of trail. Use it unless you want the fights.

The climb

A Fem-Goon leads you up the mountain. Hold the climb button on rock faces.

At the top of the first ledges there is a chest on a floating platform to the right. Walk toward it — run and the platform drifts away. In the cave, a side path to the north has a second chest.

Out of the cave you reach a Save Sphere and the Fem-Goon heads off down the path. Don’t follow her. Climb the rock wall above the Save Sphere instead. The cliff route has two more chests (one on a floating platform — walk again) and a much better scene at the top.

The fight that follows is short. Two weak goons and a sniper first, then their leader alone. His single hits are heavy, so break his power and put Protect up, and he falls over in a few turns. You leave with everything you came for.

Zanarkand: the monkeys

The ruins are full of tourists and monkeys. Isaaru is in the corridor inside the dome; talk to him and he asks for help. The monkeys with hearts over their heads are lovesick. Pick one up and carry it to its partner. There are twelve couples spread through the ruins, from the approach to the Cloister down to the rooms beyond the old chamber. A wrong match can cost you a little gil.

Pair all twelve and go back to Isaaru for an accessory. It is a long, slightly silly errand, and it is worth finishing now.

There are sixteen chests on the way through: four on the approach to the dome, two past Isaaru, four in and around the Cloister, and six in the big round hall past the Chamber of the Fayth.

Worth doing on a first run
