S.S. Liki
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
A ferry, a calm sea and a few minutes to look around. The ship is small. See all of it before you go back to the bow, because the trip ends abruptly.
Below deck
The stairs down are at the back of the ship.
A merchant waits at the bottom and asks to borrow some gil. Lend him what you can spare — a thousand is a good target. It is not wasted; he remembers.
Across the corridor is the cabin where the blitzball team is resting. There is a chest against the wall, and a suitcase on the floor. Kick the suitcase. Then kick it again. It keeps giving Potions until you are carrying twenty.
The door beside the merchant leads to the Power Room, where chocobos turn the ship’s wheel. Look in the bottom-right corner: another of those small books is lying on the floor.
Save at the Save Sphere before you go back up.
On deck
Talk to Wakka, the crowd and Yuna. Speaking to Yuna a second time moves the story on, and the next few minutes are fights back to back.
The first fight is against something in the water that Tidus cannot reach. Swap him out. Wakka’s ball, Lulu’s spells and Kimahri’s Lancet all reach it, and so does the summon. The small fiends it throws onto the deck are the only thing that actually hurts you; kill two, leave the last one alone, and spend your turns on the big target. Let Yuna heal.
The second fight is underwater with only Tidus and Wakka. Ignore the small fish. Have Wakka use Dark Attack on the boss — blinded, it misses its draining grab. Tidus uses Cheer a couple of times, then attacks. Every few turns it hits both of you at once; keep both above 200 HP and use Potions freely.
The ship reaches the next island straight after.

The Liki is a ten-minute area with one rule: everything below deck has to be done before your second conversation with Yuna at the bow. That conversation starts Sin’s attack, and the ship docks at Kilika straight after the second fight.
Before you talk to Yuna
O’aka XXIII, at the foot of the stairs, asks to borrow gil. This is the first of several meetings, and every gil you lend adds to one running total that sets his prices when he finally opens a real shop:
| Total lent | His prices |
|---|---|
| 0–100 | double |
| 101–1,000 | +50% |
| 1,001–10,000 | +20% |
| 10,001 or more | 30% off |
You cannot reach 10,001 yet. Lend 1,001 if you have it and top the total up on later boats.
Remedy — the chest in the cabin across from O’aka, where the Aurochs are resting.
Potions — the suitcase on the floor of the same cabin. Each kick gives one until you hold 20. If you arrive with 20 or more, it gives nothing; that is not a missed item.
Al Bhed Primer Vol. III — through the door beside O’aka into the Power Room, bottom-right corner of the screen. Miss it and a spare copy turns up much later in the Sanubia Desert, in the tent where you find Wakka. Take it now anyway: the spare exists only for players who missed this one, and every Primer you hold translates a little more of what the Al Bhed say to you. This one teaches that their L is our C.
Save at the Save Sphere in the main hall, then go up.
Boss: Sin (fin)
2,000 HP. The fin never attacks. It throws Sinscales (200 HP each) onto the deck, three at a time, and throws three more the moment the last one dies.
- Tidus cannot reach the fin. This is Wakka, Lulu and Kimahri’s fight. Wakka’s ball, Lulu’s black magic and Kimahri’s Lancet all connect, and Valefor flies.
- Leave one Sinscale alive. It is the only thing hurting you, and while it lives no replacements arrive. Yuna’s Cure covers it easily.
- Every Sinscale is AP. Each pays 2 AP, 3 if overkilled. If you want the levels, farm a few waves with Tidus and Cheer before you kill the fin — but rotate everyone in for at least one action so the whole party shares the AP.
- Save Overdrives for the next fight.
Boss: Sinspawn Echuilles
2,000 HP, underwater, Tidus and Wakka only, healing by Potion only.
- Drain Touch hits one character and heals Echuilles by the same amount. Wakka’s Dark Attack blinds it and the grab starts missing. Reapply it whenever Darkness wears off.
- After two Drain Touches it uses Blender on both of you: magic damage, roughly 115 to 200, which Cheer does not reduce. Keep both above 200.
- Tidus Cheers two or three times, then attacks. Spend Overdrives here.
- The Sinscales come back as fast as you kill them. Ignore them.
- No steal. Whether it drops an Ability Sphere or nothing is disputed.
The ship limps into Kilika after the fight. Everything on board that you did not take stays on this hull.
Coming back
The Liki keeps running between Kilika and Besaid. Once you are free to travel — by ferry from Luca, or later by airship — you can ride it again for the chest and the suitcase. Once the first Jecht Sphere turns up in Macalania Woods, one of Auron’s Jecht Spheres appears in this ship’s captain’s room: sail from Luca to Kilika, then take the Liki on to Besaid and look on that leg. The Primer’s spare is in the desert either way.
Game Notes
The chocobos in the Power Room are the series’ oldest joke told straight: a ferry is powered by birds on a wheel, the crew is proud of them, and nobody on board finds it strange. The fight that follows is the first time the game lets Sin itself into a battle screen, and it keeps the fight gentle — Sin attacks only through its scales. It wants you to see the size of the thing before it lets you hurt it.
