Chapter 2: The Awesome Sphere, Besaid, Kilika and Luca
Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.
Chapter 2 starts quietly. Nothing on the ship is urgent, and the south of the map has three short errands. The one thing you should not do on autopilot is answer Brother.
Back on the airship
Talk to Shinra on the bridge and say yes when he offers to show you what he found. You get an Al Bhed Primer for watching.
The engine room chests are full again. Empty them.
Go to the cabin and talk to Barkeep. He has a job for you before the show: push the three musicians in the hallway into the lift. Walk into them slowly. If one gets stuck, talk to Barkeep and they reset.
Rest in the cabin before you leave the ship. Talk to Barkeep and choose to rest. The nap the story gives you does not count; ask for one yourself. Do this in every chapter.
Where the sphere goes
Brother wants to know who gets the sphere you brought back. You choose by picking a destination on the map.
Pick Mushroom Rock Road. Both answers make a fine story, but this is the only one that can still reach 100% Story Completion on this playthrough. The other side gives a few extra items. It also has fewer scenes. You cannot change your mind afterwards.
The scenes when you arrive are long. Save when they are over.
Besaid
The Aurochs are outside the village with a new coach, and he has a shooting challenge for you. Before you take it, collect the chests:
- the cave from last time, one chest in each branch;
- under the first bridge on the Waterfall Way (step off to the left);
- the beach, up on the ledge to the left of the path, two chests.
Take the tutorial. The controls are unusual and it costs nothing. You need more than 500 points and you have to reach the beach in seven minutes. Getting hit resets your chain, and the chain is where the score comes from, so dodging matters more than speed. Keep a Death round for anything big.
Beat 500 and you get a garment grid. Higher scores pay more prizes, and the challenge comes back later, so do not grind it now unless you are enjoying it.
Kilika
A short stop. There is a scene where you land, and you can’t get past the landing this time. Talk to the people there, then jump across the boats on either side of the Save Sphere for two chests.
Luca
You arrive on the outskirts. Go down the steps and jump to the ledge near the bottom for a chest.
Walk into the square for a television interview. When you get the choice, answer “That’s right.” A garment grid follows.
If you missed the garment grid hidden on the docks last chapter, this is your last chance. Look behind the cargo at the back of Dock 5.
Sphere Break is in the locker rooms if you want practice. Then back to the ship, and north.
Worth doing on a first run

Spoilers from here.
Chapter 2 asks one question that decides the whole run, and it asks it in the first ten minutes. Everything else here is small and forgiving.
The one decision
Give the Awesome Sphere to the Youth League by choosing Mushroom Rock Road.
Talk to Brother on the bridge and you pick a destination: Mushroom Rock Road hands the sphere to Nooj and the Youth League, Bevelle hands it to Baralai and New Yevon. What it means for completion:
- Youth League is the only side that can finish one playthrough at 100% Story Completion, and so the only way to the Perfect Ending and Sweet Perfection on a single run.
- New Yevon leaves a single playthrough just short of 100% (commonly quoted as 99.4%).
- The two routes together add up to more than 100%. Story Completion carries into New Game Plus, so a New Yevon first run can be topped up to 100% on a second run that sides with the Youth League, and a Youth League run can pick up the New Yevon scenes the same way.
What the Youth League side gives up on this run: a New Yevon mission at Mushroom Rock that pays a Kinesis Badge and the Shining Mirror grid, the Blood of the Beast grid, and early access to Bevelle. None of those is needed for a trophy. Crimson Sphere 7 comes to you on either side.
Choosing Bevelle is final. There is no reload trick inside the chapter except an earlier save.
Aboard the Celsius
In order:
- Shinra on the bridge: ask about the sphere and say yes (“Sure”). The analysis video ends with an Al Bhed Primer.
- Engine room: four chests are back. Potion x8, Phoenix Down x5, Remedy x4, Ether x2. If the door is shut, talk to Brother first. A new set appears in Chapter 3, so empty these now rather than finding out whether the old contents wait for you.
- Barkeep: you are singing tonight. Push the three musicians in the hallway into the lift, slowly. Talk to Barkeep again if one jams. The show and the scenes after it are counted automatically, about 4% for the whole Celsius block including the handover.
- Rest. The nap the story gives you after the show does not count. Talk to Barkeep and choose to rest yourself. Missing the rest in any chapter loses a Chapter 5 scene and with it Sweet Perfection.
- The musicians, again. After the nap, check the hallway. If the musicians are standing there, talk to the heavier one and push them into the lift again for the Enterprise accessory. Not every save gets them back in the hallway; a clean Chapter 1 Moonflow escort is the likely condition. Treat it as a bonus.
- Brother: choose Mushroom Rock Road. The handover is a long run of scenes. Then the Gullwings decide they need three Leblanc Syndicate uniforms, which opens a Guadosalam hotspot you can ignore until you have all three.
Save. You should be at about 29% Story Completion. If you are well short, something from Chapter 1 was skipped.
Besaid: the Gunner’s Gauntlet
Talk to the Aurochs outside the village. Beclem, their new Youth League coach, dares you to beat his score of 500. Collect the chests first, then do the village campaign talks if you are still building Publicity and Marriage points.
Chests: Potion x3 and Ether x2 in the cave (left and right branches), a Wall Ring under the first bridge on the Waterfall Way (step off the left side), and Hi-Potion x2 with 1,500 gil in an alcove off the beach path, up the ledges on the left.
The Gauntlet. Seven minutes from the village to the beach, every shot hits and removes 1 HP, and you fail if you run dry, get killed, or run out of time. Take the tutorial. Points come from chains, and a hit resets the chain, so staying untouched matters more than speed. Two rounds of one ammo combine into the next grade (Ammo, Dual Shot, Death, Volley). Save Death rounds for the large machina at the end and for anything with 7 HP or more. There is a spot by the fence before the third waterfall where fiends walk past without hitting you; it is the best place to build a chain.
Beat 500 for the Enigma Plate and 0.8% Story Completion. The prize ladder continues past that, one prize per level, every level you pass paid in one run:
| Score | Prize |
|---|---|
| 500 | Enigma Plate (grid) |
| 750 | Power Wrist |
| 900 | Silver Bracer |
| 1,000 | Titanium Bangle |
| 1,150 | Mortal Coil (grid) |
| 1,300 | Beaded Brooch |
| 1,400 | Diamond Gloves |
| 2,000 | Faerie Earrings |
| 2,800 | Adamantite |
Adamantite (+120 Defense and Magic Defense, Auto-Protect, Auto-Shell) is the one worth a few retries. The Gauntlet is open again in Chapters 3 and 5, and the Volley-ammo trick at the waterfall only works once Bicocettes start appearing on higher levels, so do not burn an evening on 2,800 now. Your best score carries into New Game Plus, which means a new run has to beat it to earn anything.
Kilika
Most of the island is shut. Dona meets you where you land, and talking to her and the people around her is the 0.2%. Jump across the boats either side of the Save Sphere: Turbo Ether to the right, Mana Tablet x2 to the left. No campaign talks here this chapter. The Woods reopen in Chapter 3.
Luca
Light Curtain x2 on the ledge below the Highroad stairs.
Walk into the square for Shelinda’s interview, 0.8%. Answer “That’s right.” when asked. The answer may not matter, but this one is safe either way. She gives you the Covetous garment grid. This is the last chapter for Thunder Spawn: if you did not take it in Chapter 1, it is behind the cargo at the back of Dock 5.
The campaign talks here are worth doing: eight people, listed in the checklist.
Running total if nothing was missed: about 31% leaving Luca.
