The Penance Guide for Final Fantasy X

Updated 2026-10-10

Full spoilers.

Penance is the last boss of the International content and the strongest thing in the game: 12 million HP on the body, two arms that come back after you kill them, and an attack that hits everyone for 99,999. It is entirely optional and nothing is lost by skipping it. On a file that wants everything, it is the final fight before you go inside Sin for good.

Unlocking it

Beat every Dark Aeon. All of them, every round:

Dark Aeon Where Counts once you have…
Dark Valefor Besaid, at the village beaten her
Dark Ifrit Bikanel, far north of the desert beaten him
Dark Ixion Thunder Plains, north half beaten him twice
Dark Shiva The road up to Macalania Temple beaten her
Dark Magus Sisters Mushroom Rock Road beaten all three
Dark Yojimbo Cavern of the Stolen Fayth beaten him five times in a row
Dark Bahamut The Zanarkand Dome, Yunalesca’s room beaten him
Dark Anima Mt. Gagazet, the mountain gate beaten her

When the last one falls, a scene shows Penance hanging over the Calm Lands and a new destination, Penance, joins the airship’s list. You fight it on the airship’s deck.

If Penance hasn’t appeared, it is almost always Dark Yojimbo. His five wins have to come in one unbroken run out of the cavern. Reloading, a game over, leaving the cavern, taking the pad back to the entrance or opening the blitzball menu at the save sphere all send you back to fight one, and a run that was broken doesn’t count. The Dark Aeons guide has every one of these fights.

What you are up against

Part HP What it does
Penance (body) 12,000,000 Obliteration: hits everyone and inflicts Slow. Changes form after losing 3,000,000 HP; from then on uses Immolation: one target, empties their MP, inflicts Armor Break and Mental Break.
Left Arm 500,000 A physical that dispels the target — Auto-Life included. Tera-Graviton: takes three quarters of everyone’s max HP and adds Darkness, Silence, Sleep and Doom. Slowga.
Right Arm 500,000 A physical that petrifies and can shatter. Calamity: Poison, Curse, Darkness, Silence and every stat break on one target. Mighty Guard: Protect, Shell and Regen on Penance, and the Regen heals it a lot every turn.

Both arms come back at full HP a few turns after you kill them, for the whole fight. The body has Auto-Protect and absorbs elemental damage, so leave Fire, Thunder, Water and Blizzard at home.

Judgment Day is the one that ends runs: 99,999 damage and 999 MP off everyone. Penance keeps a hidden count that goes up every time you damage it and every time it uses Immolation; when that count is high enough it fires Judgment Day — but only if both arms are alive. Keep one arm dead at all times and it never happens. If it does land, Auto-Life brings people back, but Penance and the arms act straight after and usually finish the job.

Getting ready

This fight assumes a finished party. The usual target before going in:

  • Celestial weapons at full power on everyone you’ll use. Break Damage Limit is not optional against 13 million HP of targets. The celestial weapons guide has all seven.
  • Strength, Defense and Magic Defense at 255, HP as high as your grid goes, and Agility well into the 170s or more. Penance doesn’t dodge much, but low Luck still leaves you missing; keep it at least in the 80s.
  • Quick Hit on every attacker.

Armour, on every character:

Ability Why
Auto-Haste Stops Obliteration’s Slow and keeps your turns coming
Auto-Protect Halves Obliteration and Immolation, and can’t be dispelled
Auto-Potion Free healing every time you’re hit. Sell your Potions and Hi-Potions first so it uses X-Potions, and carry plenty
Ribbon or Stoneproof The Right Arm’s petrify-and-shatter removes a character from the fight; Ribbon also blocks Tera-Graviton’s and Calamity’s statuses

Defense +20% and Auto-Phoenix are both good choices for the fourth slot if you don’t have Ribbon. Break HP Limit helps but isn’t required.

Bring Three Stars for the second half, Dispel (Yuna) or Purifying Salt, and a stock of Megalixirs. Tidus’s Cheer, or Rikku’s Ultra NulAll (Mix two Healing Springs), cuts the damage you take a great deal.

The Monster Arena guide shows where the armour materials come from.

The first half (12,000,000 to 9,000,000)

  1. Buff on turn one. Cheer or Ultra NulAll.
  2. Kill the Left Arm first. It strips Auto-Life and casts Tera-Graviton, which is the bigger threat. About six Quick Hits from a celestial weapon does it.
  3. Then the Right Arm. It is the one casting Mighty Guard; if it gets one off, Dispel Penance or use Purifying Salt before the Regen adds up.
  4. Never kill both arms with the same attack. They come back on the same turn and act together. Stagger them: hit an arm until it’s nearly dead and finish it just before its turn comes round, so the other arm is still down or about to be.
  5. Every turn with an arm down goes into the body. Quick Hit, Overdrives, or Doublecast Ultima. Heal with items when Obliteration lands.

The second half (9,000,000 to 0)

At 3 million damage Penance drops into its second form and gives itself Haste. Dispel it straight away — a hasted Penance takes turns faster than your party can heal.

From here the body uses Immolation. Whoever it hits loses all their MP and takes Armor Break and Mental Break; with Armor Break their next hit can kill them. Dispel or cure the target before Penance acts again, and use a Three Stars or a Megalixir to get spells back.

Immolation only hits one person, which makes it a gift for counterattacks. Tidus, Wakka, Auron and Kimahri all have celestial weapons with a counter. Have one of them use Sentinel and they step in front of physical hits meant for the others, taking less damage and countering each one for free.

Keep running the same loop: kill an arm, hit the body, kill the other arm, never let both live at once. The whole fight runs 20 to 30 minutes when it’s going well.

Rewards

AP (overkill) Steal Drop
Penance 60,000 (65,000) Elixir; rare Megalixir x2 Master Spheres, and a piece of equipment that can carry Break Damage Limit or Ribbon
Each arm, every kill 10,000 Elixir Dark Matter; rare Master Sphere

Because the arms respawn, every kill is another Dark Matter roll — the fight pays out long before it’s over. Beating Penance also earns the Perseverance achievement.

There is nothing after this. If you have Penance down, the arena’s Nemesis and Omega Weapon are the only fights left that could still be worth your time.
