Moonflow

Story mode. Written for a first playthrough and kept free of spoilers — it will not tell you what happens here, only what the game is asking of you.

A forest road, a river and a ride. Two fights here are out of the ordinary: a duel between aeons on the road in, and a fight in the water with only two of your party.

South Bank Road

There are four chests on the way down, and three of them are off the main path: right of Shelinda near the start, by the tree behind the two Ronso, on the right-hand branch further along, and up a small trail on the left once you are past the summoner who stops you.

The plants on this road confuse and poison. Wakka’s Sleep Attack puts them out, and magic will not wake them.

The aeon duel

A summoner challenges Yuna to a fight between aeons. You do not have to win; losing costs you a slightly better prize and nothing else, and she gives you something important either way.

To win: before you talk to her, fight a few battles with Yuna until her Overdrive gauge is full. In the duel, call Ifrit — he arrives with a full gauge. Open with his Overdrive, cast Fire on him to heal him (he absorbs it), and save up for a second Overdrive. Two usually does it.

What she gives you lets you teach aeons new abilities with items, from the Abilities option in the menu.

South Wharf

Two chests: one as you arrive and one behind Lulu among the tents.

Before you board, gear up for lightning. Only Tidus and Wakka fight in the next battle. If either has a weapon with Lightningstrike, equip it, and give them both your best armour. Save at the sphere by the shoopuf.

The crossing

Halfway over, something attacks from underwater.

  • It is weak to lightning.
  • When it rises it is preparing a big hit on both of you. Deal about 500 damage before its next turn and you knock it down and cancel it.
  • Haste Tidus first, then Wakka, and use Cheer if you have a turn to spare. Keep both topped up with Hi-Potions.
  • If Wakka’s Overdrive is ready, stop the reels on lightning.

The north bank

Pick up the Al Bhed Primer on the wharf by the shoopuf landing as soon as you get off. One screen west, there is an Ether by a bench.

Heading west, someone joins the party for good, and a short fight teaches you what they can do. Look right after the fight for a chest of Antidotes, and at the end of the road, just before the next town, for a Mega-Potion.

Worth doing on a first run
